As a weekend warrior, I appreciate you explaining this as I had no idea . I see some detailers complain that some iron products don't work because they sprayed iron remover where they just clayed and had purple spots show up. 🙄 The iron sheering off during the clay process makes perfect sense! ✌

I recently tried one of these AZ clay towels since I ran out of fresh 'real' clay and heard this is the 'must have new thing'. It only took me a few minutes using one to come to the conclusion that I don't really care for these clay towels at all. So, I just stopped, put it back in the package, said this thing sucks, and headed out to buy some real clay. With real clay I was like yes, yes, this is what I recall when doing it in the past. Real clay gives me a 'feel' of where the contaminants are slightly dragging and then slippery when they are removed. The towel gave me no differentiating feedback whatsoever which makes it difficult to know when to say when in a particular area and then move on without under or overdoing it. Great videos Scott, I really enjoy your presentation style and your no-nonsense tips and advice. Now subscribed! :)

I’ve also noticed that slight marring on darker colors with the synthetic clay bars.i wondered if it was me doing it wrong with those.it’s certainly good to know it happens with other people doing it. FYI: The reason Scott says to use the Iron Fallout Remover first actually does something a lot of people don't know. When you see that purple, it's not Iron being dissolved. It's actually dissolving Iron Oxide, better known as rust. When the Iron gets caught up in your paint/clear coat it will start to rust due to the reaction with Oxygen. This rust causes the Iron particle to actually anchor to your paint/clear coat. When you spray the Iron Fallout Remover and it dissolves the Iron Oxide (what you see as purple) it makes it much easier for your clay bar to pull the now unanchored Iron out of your paint/clear coat. Always use the Iron Fallout Remover before you clay the vehicle. Great video Scott!

Used to do this years ago, way before technology progressed as far as it has. I have a White 09 Avalanche, originally from the San Antonio area. Really good shape, but it can always use a little more TLC. Just acquired it in central Alabama, about 4 months ago. You can teach an old dog new tricks!

Thank you Scott for confirming what I thought about iron decon then claying. I have watched so many other videos that all seem to give the advise the other way around. Just seems like common sense to me that if you can spray an iron remover to melt the iron away, that is less contamination that will need to be removed with your choice of claying product and causing less damage to the paint that you will have to correct.

Scott, good stuff...always appreciate your videos. Would working smaller areas at a time (say dividing that tailgate into 4 quarters) along with frequent rinsing the towel (the 2-bucket method with water/iron solvent) help to better "unload" the contaminants from the clay towel? Too, these towels are so inexpensive you can certainly have quite a few on hand.

I started with this product it worked perfect... then i went with the nano skin pad....makes it quicker to clay paint. I use dawn dish and water for keeping surface wet while using the pad

Another good review. I've watched a few videos on clay and I've seen conflicting ideas. I have clayed several cars so I'm familiar with using it but my questions are these....1) how much clay to use on say a 4 door sedan, 2) how many cars can 1 bar (say 50-100 grams) do ? Usually the cars I do for friends and fam have never been done and I use 50 grams or so for 1 car and chuck the bar after. It seems that using the same bar for several cars would add contaminates to the new car instead of removing them. I know it's very situational, but in a general sense for a dirty car.

I know people can clay a car with no marring if done right, but I tend to only clay if I'm going to do paint correction. I love these mitts and towels for their convenience, especially when any light marring will be removed by correction.

I have a question regarding mared paint. I used a synthetic clay bar with the wrong clay bar solution on a white car and it messed up the paint pretty bad in 1 spot. What are my options to restore the paint in that area and get rid of the weird pattern, I do not have a DA to polish with. Would a finisher wax help me or should I invest in a DA system?

Mothers reusable clay bar is my favorite. You can just use soap and water for extra lubrication but water is the only ingredient needed.

I have an almost new 370Z with a black paint job that I need to do a decon wash on and so I'm very interested in finding a good clay product for it. Do you think you could use the iron remover as a clay lubricant and have both decon steps(chemical and mechanical) combined into one?

So in order to do this properly would i have to remove the wax of my clear coat first or that doesn't matter? 2nd, as i spray the iron remover, do i leave it for X amount of time then rinse off, or do i spray it and while it is on... Start using my clay towel then rinse off? I'm a weekend warrior and habe learned almost everything through you, and yes your videos can be long but i don't mind it because I'm aware this isn't just a simple task and there's many factors and processes in the auto detailing world that just one video cannot cover it all let alone a 3 minute video for example. Very interesting product Scott. I have a question for you though. If only iron remover products are able to act on deeply bonded contaminants, why not just bypass physical decon totally then and at the same time avoid the risk of marring the surface?

Trick with synthetic clay towels or pads is lubrication and lots of it. I use a good lube soap when washing and use the residual soap for claying (nothing wrong with spray on lubes or things like ONR, but I am saving a few steps using a good, high lube soap).

I'm thinking the opposite: First clay, then iron remover. Because that way the iron remover will get into the imbedded part of the iron piece, instead of just treating the top of it and leaving the imbedded part. This can be confirmed with a test: Divide the panel to 2 sides. On one side, clay first, then iron removal. On the other side, first iron removal, then clay. Wash both sides, then iron removal again on both sides and see which side reacts more.

Is a clay cloth or a clay block any good for removing hard water stains from car windows? If not, what do you recommend?

Rinse it down with a heavy spray (pressure washer or high pressure hose) first to knock off much of the heavy material, then use iron remover, then clay bar. Less likely to scratch with the clay towel/bar. Actually, I thought this was a comparison of clay towel to clay bar, used normally.

I use petrol or white spirit and microfibre towel then thoroughly rinse. Any particular reason why a half hour job should turn in to hours and hours by using a clay bar and lubricant
