Big hugs from another PhD student! Academia can be so tough and so cruel and your mental health should always come before a degree. I’m doing mine part time while working a professional job on the side, and I think my relationship to academia would be far worse if I didn’t have my other job to take the pressure off. Hope your new adventure brings you so much joy and fulfilment, and I can’t wait to hear more about it!

I finished my doctorate (Brazilian version of a phd) in late January, by the strength of hate! Afterwards, I took a vacation trip to Sweden (loved!) came back, and all my health issues I’d been having over the last few years decided they would not be ignored anymore. I now have diagnostics (several), medications (plenty), and a sabbatical from academia. And when people ask me about my study life, I tell them I’m doing a post doctorate in yarn crafts at KZfaq university, knitting my heart out 🤭. The only way I’m resuming academia is if I’m getting paid for it, thank you very much. Plus, academia and mental health do not go together. At all. There are several studies taking place about it, all over the world. You go you for putting your health first!!! PS. Ditto on the sweet shop blanket! It’s on my needles, and I adore! Already thinking about the next one 😁

thank you so much for sharing! good for you 👏🏼😊 I’ve had most of my diagnostics since before starting my phd but it definitely made things worse in the last year and I had to make a difficult decision since medication + therapy isn’t enough if you’re this miserable.. ❤ love that, happy knitting!

💛💛💛 so proud of you for making the step to get out and choosing yourself and your mental health above academia! The structural problems of academia already make it so toxic that the supervisor/work group/colleagues/etc. really have to be right to make up for it and make it sustainable. Sending you the warmest of hugs, and looking forward to hearing about your new adventures! (So glad that the quote could help you -- it's originally by Ali Hazelwood. Her books are set in STEM academia, so a little different from your context, but they all helped me immensely in dealing with issues in academia by naming them and making fun of them).

thank you so much hannah! 💕 I've actually got a book from her on audible a while back but haven't started it, so maybe if I do, I might recognize it! I do think this was the right decision for me and my health, even though it wasn't easy and I'll be for sure missing some aspects of it, like the my colleagues, lively discussions, travel and conferences that came with it, but definitely not the stress, self-worth doubts and anxiety and all the things that I've found really difficult to deal with..

Hello! You should always be so so proud of yourself for doing what’s best for you and your wellbeing. I know how hard it is to let go and fight sometimes those feelings of feeling deflated/a quitter bla bla (I feel especially even more as a woman where we always are pressured to be the best). I’ve heard recently that it’s better to disappoint others than to disappoint yourself. And although it’s tough, please don’t compare to others and remember that you’re always more than enough,Marlene. (Sorry for the long text and best of luck in your new adventures!)

That Gregoria fibers sweater, I’ve been loving since the tease and definitely want to make that. Haha the quilted looking cardigan I love and have it in my queue for someday. I’m also new to sewing and love it so much. I made a project bag as well so much fun and a few other things. Those threads are the best. It’s what I use. Oh my goodness I’m also starting to spin on a drop spindle. So much fun but I’m slow so takes a lot of time but definitely enjoying it. I’m quitting my job at the end of the year for the same reasons and I’m planning on traveling in Europe for a while. Another great episode, Marlene. Thanks for sharing about your decision to leave academia. It can be such a challenge to make a choice to leave something we’ve put so much of ourselves into. But you prioritized yourself and your health and that is never the wrong decision! I’m excited for your next chapter. Better days are still to come. I’m working on the Framework Raglan, a test knit for JessieMaed Designs while watching. Although I paused to write down some of my fall knitting plans also. You made a good point about being realistic with plans. I didn’t write down everything I want to make (including one of those beautiful Judy Sweaters by Gregoria Fibers) because I don’t want to be disappointed by not finishing everything or not enjoying the knit of the moment because I’m focused on the next knit on the list! I hope you purchased that Saffron yarn from EKF! It really is so beautiful.
