Thanks so much for posting this. I just started learning jazz, and I feel like a total beginner. For this lesson I was just keeping it to basics G major over the major sections, and E harmonic minor over the minor sections (exception being that small part w/ the flats which called for a couple Melodic minors). I especially appreciate the scrolling and accuracy. I'd have a lot of trouble figuring out where I'm screwing up if not for your addition, and taking the effort so all levels can approach. Some of these backing tracks start off okay, but by the B section I don't know what planet their chords are coming from. I see some people are complaining about Em6. Whatever, to that. You nailed the bulk of the FAKE BOOK aside from one little chord. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your backing tracks. They keep me sane, and calm as I stress my way through the difficulties of learning Jazz. Starting from the bottom after 20 years being self-taught is a harsh pill. Thank you for making my experience more pleasant. SUBBED. :)

@@guitareimprovisation No problem. man! Like I said, thank you! :) Still practicing your Backing Track, right now! Should be ready for tomorrow's lesson. I've got a good ear, but I'm a long way from the comfort of minors and majors. I'm sure everyone encounters these difficulties in the beginning. This is only my second improv assignment. Glad you have so much material, b/c after tomorrow I'll be needing you again for my third. lol. Have a great day, my man :) P.S - Those lame shredders have nothing on you Jazz musician's, that's for sure.

@@cx777o That's so awesome to hear, man. I can't shred to save my life. So, there. :) Jazz would be music for the sake of music. I've always really dug the more inspired roots of 60's and 70's music. I'm currently learning The Allman Bros. Fillmore West performance of Stormy Monday Blues. Check that one out. Dickie Betts always said, his style was so simple that anyone could play it.", but there's a big difference b/w this and "Jessica" lol. Even w/ the tab, it's just nuts. Probably b/c you just don't see tab like this anymore, man! I'd be curious to know what a guitarist of your skill thought about it. :)

@PIANOSTYLE100
@PIANOSTYLE100 7 жыл бұрын
Maria Altimo this is an old post but the you asked how to play the f# half dimished and you asked how to play the dflat7. Peruse this at your leisure it's involved . This may sound complicated, if you bake a cake and you wrote about it, it would sound complicated. After you study this for awhile it will make sense. cut and paste this into a music journal. or put in watch later. I will give you the answers but teach (not over the net) so you can do it yourself. I am writing a flip phone so there may be mistakes. First the dflat 7 . All you do I'd make the dflat maj 7 and flat the flat the seventh . I have common sense methods along with theory. Let's think c scale and translate that knowledge. We will use c because c has no accidentals(sharps or flats.) notes of the major c scale are are cdefgab (c.). look on your keyboard. all major scales follow the pattern whole step. whole step 1/2 step 3 whole steps a half step that will be the octave. ( a 1/2 step is a semitone and a step is two semitones.). I call this (21/2 3 1/2 ) take c e g and flat the the natural 7 (b) .. that will be called the flatted 7 (not the major 7 (b.) so the c 7 is also called a dominant c7. Also notice that by taking the root c c down by a whole step you get the same bflat note. Now let's go onto the f #°. The full dimished chord in c would be c eflat gflat a . This is nothing but stacked minor thirds. c to eflat then eflat to gflat then gflat to a . but the half dimished only does one minor diad(two notes) play c and eflat simultaneously. now let's play the original gflat and a together. all four notes . that is is not what you asked for ( you still have a full diminished chord. The half has a bflat in it.. The easiest way to make c dim is to take the above c seven chord c e g bflat and flat all but the root c . c eflat gflat a.. the c half finished is c eflat gflat blat. Whew. now form the f# dominant chord ( f# a# c# e ) flat all except root and flatted 7. . Finally ( f# a c e ) is is your f#° .. hope this helps.. if you've moved on just delete this..

Sometimes its really important, that you listen to an instrument or vocalist that has to breathe......Before you solo over a backing track.....(without getting into the whole debate about the pros of cons of the use of backing tracks, for me does it serve a purpose when i am alone practicing, yes this certain one we are using right here does.} no matter what level player you are, take it easy...Put on a beautiful trumpet solo over this tune, do not transcribe but absorb it....Hopefully now you are clear headed have a lot of beautiful inspiration....You are now ready to play at your level most of the slow ideas your ear is hearing pretty quickly....Now sing the melodies as you play them, if possible....piano, guitar, bass, etc......Some old school guy sat me down, he play in late 40-50s.and this was the first thing he made me do....I could not sleep and did not proof read, do the exercise for 3 days then go back and play a different song you been learning...See a difference??? If you do get in touch, this is no bullshit for the doubters and haters...Im much more a rock blues guitarist, who gets jazz gigs here and there, so i am reviewing all the material he taught me lately.....If you like to join me get in touch...Ronnie Fischer facebook...ruronnie2@gmail.com...this is not guitar lessons, its a program that has a start and finish....it takes 4months-1year to complete....im tired, get in touch if it works, this just a tiny piece.....plz do hate, just say nothing...or say it privately to me..ty

+Boristofu Povolotsky Look up "autumn leaves" on youtube and listen to some other players play through it. The idea is to use the harmony implied by the chords to construct your own improvisation! It doesnt always mean you need to play chord tones, but they help you to resolve melodic ideas or construct interesting contours. Basically, you can do what ever the hell you like! :D

What does the 0 with the / through it mean? Also, does % mean repeat? thanks

Ø means half diminished, or a min7b5. So basically F#Ø means F# half diminished or F#m7b5 (F# A C E). And yes, % means repeat the measure before. Hope this helps, and happy playing!

I really enjoy your work - your tracks are high quality. That being said, there seems something off about your Autumn leaves tracks. I am playing saxophone to them, and i am having to tune down a bit to be in tune. It seems almost like the Guitar is bending down a little at he end of phrases.

@@guitareimprovisation Its actually driving me crazy. It sounds fine till i play with it. I am a pro musician, and have 40 years experience. Sadly, AM a perfectionist lol.Have someone play a sax or Clarinet with it and see if you can see what I mean. It sounds good by itself and cant really tell where the weirdness is. Its something about how the guitar rings. dont notice it on your others much, but mainly on this one. could just be a stylistic thing. I am not criticizing - your m y favorite backing track guy on here.Georgia on my mind and Fly me to the Moon are fine.

E minor works well! Learning a basic set of arpeggios for minor 7, major 7, dominant 7, and half-diminished chords really helps with these backing tracks. After getting a feel for them, pairing the arpeggios with a scale, such as E minor can create some really cool improvisational ideas. I recommend getting a free online book pdf with scales and arpeggios, have fun and explore.
