Hi Sandra- Greetings from America. I love your tutorials. I have played guitar for over 30 years. I'm an intermediate player at best. I fell in love with jazz over 12 years ago, and took some lessons, but just couldn't (or wouldn't!) get the theory down. Now at age 50, I've committed myself to learning a standard per month starting with Autumn Leaves. I've been through this lesson several times. Next up will be the Chord Melody. Then the soloing. Hopefully, that will help me get a grasp on some theory. I have a pretty good ear, which can be a hindrance at times, because I rely on it too much. Thank you for providing these great lessons! And, keep up the good work with the weight loss! I've lost over 100 pounds myself in the last year! By the way, while I have never had the pleasure, both my wife and my brother have had the opportunity to visit your beautiful country on different occasions and loved the hospitality of your countrymen, and the wonderful culture! Cheers.

Hi Scott, Glad you let me part of your jazz journey. You should definitely start with the chords. Check out my jazz 7th chords lesson, then the Tensions lesson. Also the basic jazz rhythm lesson. For soloing, I recommend the "How to play better Jazz Solos" lesson. Congrats on your weight loss, comrade! 100 pounds sound like a lot. I'm already at my target weight and been holding it for the past months. The for the compliment on Austrian hospitality, bit it's not really true, lol. Vienna somehow managed to got voted the "most livable city" in the world for the 12th (!) me in a row, but also the 2nd unfriendliest people living in it, hahaha. We need our time with strangers. If we know someone and like them, we're super kind, but not from the first moment on. You need to earn the love of a Viennese, but then it's forever 😁

Great lesson. Good point about using the D7b9 after an A-7b5. I thought about that...then I realized I do this naturally on the piano. I usually have and A in the base and the A-7b5 ( A C Eb G) moving effortlessly to D7b9 (A C Eb F#)..just move the pinky in the right ✋. It's just a Diminished 7 of any of those notes in the chord. Sometimes it helps to think of another instrument. The best.

Thank you. I was doing some.reseach last night about Autumn leaves. I can't take credit for these thoughts. Amin7 through Amin7 using the Diatonic seventh yields most of the chords of AUTUMNLEAVES.. Loosely the song chords are A-7 D-7 G7 Cmaj7 Fmaj7 B-7b5 Emin7...Wow circle of 4ths.combined with Diatonic 7ths . There is a part of this song that goes to E7 which comes from the notes of Amin harmonic. That also can be harmonized in 7ths.

It was the communist song for the Viennese workers here in Austria, then it was a chabson in France and then it became a standard year's later. If there's no sooner he don't is usually played in Gm, like in this version. If there's a sichert the song can be in any key, that is most convenient for the divert. Often it's in Dm, Em or Am. Hi Sandra, love your channel, so happy that I found it. I studied classical guitar in my teens, put it down after college (life got in the way...work, wife, kids, etc.) and fell in love with jazz but never knew how to approach it (pre internet years). I just picked up an archtop and am making it my life's work to learn jazz guitar. I'm fortunate in that I'm starting on third base (at least second). Hope you get that American reference to baseball. Anyway, there's a couple of things that I can't bring myself to do and have a couple of questions. Hybrid picking...I can't bring myself to using my pinky to pluck the string. It just seems wrong (you may know p i m a for the fingering on the right hand) and it feels terrible. Why are you using a pick at all on this tune. There doesn't seem to be any value to it. Now that I have an archtop and an amplifier I seem to be able to dial in a stronger tone if I'm using my fingers rather than a pick. If I wanted to solo in a piece then that would be different as you can solo much faster with a pick. Is there a real reason why you are using hybrid picking here? Also, there's no way that I'm ever going to use the thumb on my left hand to form a chord. It puts my wrist in the complete wrong position and goes against everything I know ;-). Will I really be at a disadvantage if I refuse to do this contortion? You have a gift for teaching. Do you also play out, forgetting about Covid 19 of course? Thanks, Paul
@GuitarversumSandraSherman3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, You don't have to use hybrid picking, if it down't feel good for you. I use it on almost every tune. It gives me the freedom to add in some single notes whenever I want to. It's just very flexible. You also don't have to use your thumb for some of the chords, but I highly recommend it for the m7b5 chord from the E-string. You can change over to its V chord quicker. Also on the higher fret numbers there's not enough room for four fingers.
