My daughter in law was in teaching for 18 years and left last year. She taught from age 4 to 6. She says as you, that having left, she realised she lived in a constant state of anxiety. She, too, describes it as a trauma. She is doing so much better now.

Texas teacher here. I’m going into my 11th year next year. While I love my school and students, the district is another story. They keep taking things away: desks, resources, and, overall, their trust in the educator to make informed decisions. The teaching profession is in crisis.

Trust in the educator and admin/district supporting the educator are key. And they're pretty much gone. Education is indeed in a crisis.

Stay the course Autumn! I’m 65 and just retired. So many things about your life parallel mine. Messy childhood ( but I had much more security in my home than you did) no role models, etc. I managed to get educated, own 2 successful businesses over my 50 year work experience and was so happy working mostly for myself. My hubby, who is also much older than me, had a stroke last year and I had 2 major cancer treatments in the last 7 years, so we were kind of “forced” to move across country last year to be close to family. I really understand so much of how you feel and what you have been going through. Just keep going! I’ve watched you for years and you are such an inspirational human being. Best of luck, Autumn. Keep enjoying life!

I retired on April 19th at 40 yo. I will never commit my time for any organization ever again. I’m savoring every second of my day now and it feels so good. I plan to move far away from the reaches of the government and be self sufficient. I will never be a slave ever again. My four children will not be slaves either.

Teaching is traumatizing. I had entered the profession already traumatized by life events, but teaching then piled on top of it, from as early as my student teaching days! I’m glad to hear you found a life and career outside of it. I wonder if and when I will go down that route. Right now, I can’t financially swing it.

I’m in year 41 being an educator…I taught, went into administration and then returned to the classroom after COVID. The changes, not necessarily for the better, that have happened over the years sometimes leave me shaking my head. I’m fortunate enough that my content is advanced placement and teachers are scarce. I close my door, teach my kids and have a blast with them and I have the attitude that they can fire me if they don’t like it. I get what you were feeling and I’m glad you’re in a better place.

COVID helped me decide it was time to retire after 43 years of being a RN. Best decision I have ever made. I love not having to get up & get ready to go to work. It is so wonderful to be on my own schedule & not having to answer to anyone. Plus bring free of the stress is the best part! So good for you Autumn & Paul doing what you have worked so hard for!!

I love your up date! I mention that I was going to retire from teaching and move to Washington the state. Well, I’m retired, went up the coast of Oregon and stayed in Yachats, then went to Newport , loved it. I went to Portland Leather Goods got a beautiful light green purse, then traveled to stay at my son’s home. Tomorrow, we are going to go through our walk thru of the new house and move in at the end of the month. It has been a lot of work. I and my father have lived in California all of our life so far, we are so looking forward to be with my son’s and family! Here’s to making big changes!

From personal experience I would say, listen to your gut, follow your heart and just know that you will find your way with the passions you have and the drive to go with it! As someone old enough to be your mom, I couldn’t be more proud of what you have accomplished already, your willingness to be vulnerable in sharing your dreams with all of us and I look forward to the next update on the “adventures of Autumn and Paul! Thanks so much for the update 💗 It has been a pleasure to watch your journey. You are inspiring. I get what you mean about being traumatized by a job. I work in a very fast pace retail environment, with headsets that we have to wear and a million people pulling us in a million directions. It’s utter chaos. I’ve had a few weeks off, due to a work related injury that I will fully recover from. I find I am unable to allow myself to just feel quiet and calm. It’s not that I’m a go getter and super productive (I would rather be sitting on the couch watching KZfaq most days) it’s just that I am so conditioned to be constantly running around doing the next thing. I have a BA degree that has been of no use to me. And somehow, here I am in middle age still working retail and realizing I want nothing more than a calm and quiet job that allows me to use my brain.
@AutumnBeckman
@AutumnBeckman Ай бұрын
I've done retail, too, but not with a headset. That sounds intense. I'd say I hope you heal quickly but it sounds like you could use a break. I know what you mean about it being difficult to unwind when you're used to chaos.

The biggest surprise for me was your wedding but I’m so happy for the two of you❤. We emigrated 20 ya from the Netherlands to Norway. Never been there before. When we drove up the first time to the place we could possibly start working, it felt like coming home. When returning in holland, we sold the house, packed up the kids and we left. Never ever one second of regret. Portland is your place to be. ….totally not related but still missing you start tune I must say😉

Just took early retirement at 50 yo. Much the same here, too, with regards to the stress, anxiety, disrespect, and not being valued. You're correct Autumn, it was a lot of trauma from a toxic work environment and toxic supervisors and co-workers. It takes a while to unpack it all, but I'm so grateful that I chose to retire from my field (health). I'm starting a business as well, but taking my time as I'm just beginning to feel like myself again. Best wishes always, Autumn! Love your channel and the diversity of topics.

Thank you for the life update! I have been so curious how it's been going for you but felt rude asking. Hearing the last bit about barely leaving the house because you feel like there are always things that need to be done reminded me of when I was in grad school and working full time. I ended up scheduling myself a window of down time every Sunday for 4 hours so I could go out and do something to relax/have fun/etc. that was NOT running errands. Because it was scheduled, I found myself able to fully enjoy it and not feel guilty for taking time away from studying for my MBA. Maybe scheduling fun time for yourself could help :]

Autumn: I loved this video so much! You answered so many of my questions. I totally relate to the disrespectful way you were treated in your old job. I am a supervisor in a hospital and my manager is constantly undermining my relationships with my staff. She makes decisions without my knowledge or input. I'm always saying "you don't need my permission, but I should be part of the discussion". I'm glad that you're enjoying working for yourself. You're doing a fabulous job. Your videos are comprehensive and interesting. The issue of working from home is, you're always at work and it can be difficult to end your work day. Hi Autumn - I am truly thrilled for the success you are having in your life. One thing that is so interesting about life is how tailored it is for each of us personally. To hear you relate the twists and turns life has taken for you. I can see how all these things seem to have been crafted for your growth and ultimately your enjoyment. While it is true that many people are being laid off what you cannot see is how that works for them. More often than not it leads to a better life believe it or not! What am I saying in all this rambling? Only that there is nothing to be afraid of - reviewing your past can clearly show you how your life has been a progression from bad to better, to new opportunities, to exponential growth to freedom to joy, etc. Enjoy everything that is coming for you, fear nothing and be grateful. ❣ Myra

It’s super scary to break off and work for yourself. I relate. After being a lawyer in a large top firm I went off on my own. It was so scary. People couldn’t believe I would walk away from that ( especially 25 years ago and being a female back when there were very, very few females doing the type of law I specialized in). I remember the first day at my new desk hoping the phone would ring…it did not…but eventually it did, and 15 years later my old law firm combined with the one I started myself and took me and my then 33 employees back under MY terms. It can be done. Starting on your own is hard, there will definitely be setbacks, self doubt, and criticism, but I have watched you a long time and you have what it takes!❤

Hey Autumn! There is so much I love about this video. My day job is as a mental health counselor. I used to work in schools, so I saw first hand how many teachers are leaving the field right now and WHY (so many reasons lol). Many of my teacher friends have shared similar stories unfortunately. It was so cool to hear how you made this change and all the paths you explored. Thank you for sharing with us! ❤

I really enjoyed this video! I've told you before how much I love your "talk" videos. I worked at a large bank for 23 years and then quit to have kids late in life and have taken a job that has really worn me out. I want to get back into to the business world but at 61 it's seem very daunting and I know the whole resume and interview process will be so different! My kids say oh just go find a new job but it's not that easy and I've lost my confidence because I haven't used those types of skills in so long! I hope KZfaq job works out and you can keep working for yourself!

Under a previous principal I had 32 computers in my classroom but one class had 33 students. I requested either one more computer or one less student...perfectly reasonable...but that principal refused and said two students could share one computer. I tried repeatedly to explain to her why that wouldn't work in a class where student work is independent (not group work) and almost 100% computer based but she refused to budge. Ultimately, I had to write the parents of the two students and have them talk to the principal. Insanity. Thank you for the well wishes. :)

Always love your videos. You and Paul are so brave to have made the move and be happy. I know life isn’t perfect, but this is awesome for you. After graduating college to become a teacher I walked into a classroom full of kids while waiting to be interviewed by school officials. I had such anxiety watching the teacher run around and not being able to keep up. At some point she asked me to help her. At that point I walked out and thanked her for the opportunity but knew this life long dream was not going to be for me. Specially with the pay and the ever changing rules that you are forced to follow. Thank goodness I found a career were I am able to also teach, but not for school district. Thank you for teaching 12 years. I am 100% sure you are missed. So happy for you. ❤❤❤❤🌸🥰

I’ve found when I’ve needed work I’ve just taken a job (virtually any job) in a good sized company. Before I’ve known it, my coworkers have intuitively seen my strengths and suitable work finds it way to me (I’ve always been good at delivering high quality work in areas other people find challenging. I am good at understanding technical details in scientific and technological fields, explaining in simple terms, and producing high quality documents). I get promoted and promoted again, and this has occurred in multiple industries/careers as I’ve changed industries and careers several times. I’m trusted with the same kind of work in each setting. You might not be able to compete with the experience other job-seekers have right now, but they’ll never be you with your unique strengths.

Thank you, Jill. He's done a lot of photography but not nearly enough. He has joined a photo group here. I went to a meeting with him a few weeks ago and it was interesting that when they did a slideshow of members' work the photos were mostly landscapes from the Pacific Northwest (as would be expected) and it felt really foreign to me because I'm still not used to being immersed in this landscape. For us, any one of those photos would have won awards in Texas but here they're just like...ah, I took that one out my front door this morning. Oddly, one of the photos was of a bull rider at a rodeo...finally something I could relate to! ;D

Good morning Autumn. Now I realize why you left teaching. So many teachers are told their duty, never given a choice. Good for you, life is full of surprising happenings. And there is sooooo much I didn't tell you guys, including that they eliminated the digital arts program after I left (even though digital arts is a mandated part of the Texas Visual Arts curriculum) and assigned TWO teachers to teach yearbook. I'd been doing it by myself (along with all my other duties) for 10 years. I asked for help with it last year and was refused and made to feel like there was something wrong with me for requesting assistance. The same has happened when there were problems with students. I rarely asked for help with students in part because I prefer to handle things myself but also because I knew the help would be nonexistent. It took a student in my class threatening to kill everyone (he would never have done that but he was well known to have a lot of emotional challenges before this) before our admin finally stepped up and did something but that's only because they were required to do so in situations like that.

My hubby and I moved from the Bay Area to Atlanta in late 2018. We have a wooded area in our backyard. It’s such a beautiful and green place compared to the Bay Area. I grew up in the Bay but it’s just so crowded and expensive that it was depressing. I do miss being near the bay, but it’s a slower pace here and we’re not stressing month to month or daily with the commute. I miss my friends but like you I visited and was like, ya this is home. I could do without the humidity but our neighborhood has a pool and we have AC so it’s not that bad. Plus we actually have a house, in the bay we couldn’t afford one. I never thought I’d live in the south but here I am, I’m grateful that I’m comfortable. I’m a graphic designer so I can work from home, I don’t miss the commute at all.

Isn’t the saying “A change is as good as a rest.” Sometimes we just need a change no matter what it might be. I’m really in need of a change as I feel stuck in a rut. My husband and I have bought a new home to downsize to. I thought this was a go but now we’re seeing other homes we like. Our son will move into one and we will move into another. I just can’t wait. After 23 years in our home I need to move. Our home is just too big to look after and I’m so looking forward to the future. I think you are such an intelligent and brave woman.
