It's already time to plan for a fall garden! I've already started some of my seeds and next month I'll be starting even more.
Planning for fall tends to center around your first frost date; for me that's November 6 (approximately). Find your first frost date by googling "first frost date for (your area or nearby large city)"
----
Welcome to Auxhart Gardening! I’m Rachel, a small-scale southern gardener growing near Clemson, SC, zone 7b. I mainly garden in-ground, with containers as secondary production spaces.
Knowing where your food comes from is powerful, and empowering, and I believe we can change the world through gardening education.
The agricultural system is broken; we’ve monocultured nearly every major crop, forcing the use of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers to maintain large-scale food production. I believe there’s a better way.
By teaching people to rely on themselves, even just a little, for their food supply, we might be able to create some breathing room for our strained food system, allowing for change to start happening.
By educating people about where food comes from and how to grow it, we can raise awareness about our broken agricultural system and form a community that understands how to fix it.
By forming a community, we can move toward creating real change in the world.
My goal is to educate; yes you can grow food, yes you can do it without chemicals, yes you can do it in your backyard or on your windowsill. And yes, that can make a difference in the world.

While the colder temperatures are a factor in growth rate it is really the increasingly shortening photoperiod day after day that is the more relevant factor in how long it can take for fall crops to mature. In the spring an earlier planting will have more light exposure over the course of a given number of days ( for instance, a radish with an expected 25 days to maturity planted in early march will have had less light in 25 days of growth than that same radish planted in early April due to the longer daylight hours each day). In the fall it is opposite, earlier plantings get more light exposure over the same number of days compared to later plantings. Due to this a couple days can really make all the difference in getting crops to maturity before it gets too cold.

I love that you start your video and say where you are. I don't need your exact address, just where you are. I'm in NE GA, 7b. Then when watching your video I can decide if your growing conditions are similar to mine or if I need to adjust. It's just so hard to find videos about gardening where I am. Middle GA and south GA are totally different than my area, much more hot and longer growing times. NW GA gets more winter weather. I am more close to the SC border and like to find gardeners to watch near my area.

I got my seeds ready, trying onions and garlic this year. Long time til fall in Phoenix though so I just put down some cucumbers for the first time, see if they can handle our heat.

Hi Rachel, thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I will be starting a fall garden this year and looking forward to your updates to your fall garden. In regards to planting carrots, I have had little luck direct sowing, so I’ve been transplanting all my carrots year. Keep up the good work. God bless.

How have you been doing that? Everyone who talks about it, including ppl like Charles Dowding, say it’s downright near impossible to transplant carrots effectively.

Fantastic video! Carrots ARE SO difficult! Looks as if I’ll be successfull for the first time this year with summer carrots (third trial).. Based in Denmark we have approximately same first frost dates…, but less sunlight I assume, since I’d have to get started a little earlier to get a winter/fall harvest! Thanks for sharing that things are not always easy and that failures do occur.

I had my best year ever of carrots this year. I'm in GA zone 7b. I planted in early February and thinned much more than usual. I just planted another round in hopes of a fall harvest. Good luck!

Just planted a second crop of potatoes and carrots. Will be planting collards as soon as I get an open space. Hope to get my garlic and onions ordered so they can go in after these come out. I'm also in the upstate of SC and love following your channel.

I'm getting ready for my second fall gardening season. I tried out a ton of salad green last fall and figured out what grows well and what we enjoy eating. Im starting some Napa, radish, Dutch broadleaf cress, lettuce, and bunch of other salad greens :) thanks for the tips!

I've never had fava beans before. I was inspired by you to try them this year. So we shall see how to goes🥰

Definitely get some from the store so you can practice cooking with them before you've grown your own so that you know how to use them :)

I planted turnips last year in September and was able to harvest them throughout the winter. Worked out really nicely, one of my only winter/fall crops that didn’t get destroyed by slugs. I think our climates are very similar I live in sw Washington. About 40 miles north of Portland OR.🤙

Yeah I've heard it's a similar climate over there. I actually just ate some summer turnips and they weren't half bad.

I planted fava beans last November, they overwintered and are finally finishing beans NOW and I have squash starting underneath. Gonna start them in August-September this year, they don’t super like the high heat but went through a mild 8a-8b pnw winter with snow just fine.

I’m in North Texas working full time and mostly gardening in the morning and evening. My garden is about 40% built but I’m going to attempt getting garlic and onions in the ground this year. I’m in about the same grow zone so this video is helpful 🌷

Hey! I'd say grow zone matters very little for stuff like this. It only matters if you're trying to figure out what would be perennial vs. annual in your area. I lived in north texas for 15 years and I can say the climate is v different. Much drier and possibly hotter.

I already have plants ready to go in for winter and spring, just a couple, but it's what I can grow. I grow purple sprouting broccoli and chard, those are one to think about. I'm in the UK so our temps a different. They survive harsh weather here so they should be great with you. I have a very small space, so I have to limit what I grow.

Yeah the UK climate is pretty different from here. Those brassicas do really well over there.

Everything of mine is behind. I was looking at last years pictures and I was pulling first wave summer crops to put in second wave. I'm still waiting for first wave to produce or finish ripening. This is a weird year.

My plants were definitely planted late, since my first batch of seedlings failed. But thankfully my long season means it's not a huge deal.

It was much cooler this year in my 9b California city as well. Oddly, this meant I had a way more productive summer than usual since none of my plants were forced into high temp related hibernation like they normally do. All that to say, yes: it’s been an odd year.

I'm a little late for this comment but: Onions come in three types: Long day that needs a lot of sunlight to bulb up. Good for high latitudes. Short day need more even day/night growing period Day neutral doesn't care. Which type are you planning for your fall/winter garden?
@AuxhartGardening
@AuxhartGardening Жыл бұрын
I hadn't heard of day neutral before, do you know any examples of varieties? I plant short day in my area.
