Avalanche caught CLOSE-UP by FPV drone - Long range mountain surfing in 4k

We were out for a day of long range mountain surfing in British Columbia on Vancouver Island with our long range drones (that we build ourselves), hoping to get some nice cinematic footage. There was a "severe avalanche warning" a couple of days prior, but things seemed to have calmed down. Just when were were getting ready to leave, I looked up and saw a huge avalanche coming down the mountain right in front of us! I scrambled to get a battery on my long range FPV drone, fumbled with my GoPro, and booked it out towards the mountain as fast as I possibly could. I got there just in time to see an absolutely scary amount of snow from an avalanche hitting the bottom of the mountain. What looks like water in this video is actually a huge amount of snow, with some chuncks as big as my truck.
Since I had the goggles on, I couldn't see what was goin on around me, and I was pretty paranoid about the avalanche coming down the mountain, through the valley and up the other side where we were sitting, all without me knowing. I was also worried that the road would get obliterated and we'd be stuck way out in the back country. Luckily, it wasn't even close.
* I'm trying to get a documentary made about drone mountain surfing - If you can help in some way, please contact me! *
Here's the FPV long range drone rig I used:
- Camera Butter 7 Cinema ONE 7 inch frame, with a custom front end that helps me get close-to-the ground shots
- T-motor F90 motors
- T-motor F7 55A stack
- Caddx Vista
-True RC antennas all around
- TBS Crossfire diversity receiver
- GNB 4500 LiPo HV 6s battery
- GoPro Bones with Camera Butter ND32 filter

@@MactacFPV is the sound added in editing? I'm curious how there was sound but not of the drone itself - I thought most of them didn't even have mics. great footage though, I'd be afraid I'd accidentally crash it up there and never be able to get it back!
@MactacFPV
@MactacFPV Жыл бұрын
@@jlt131 The sound is picked up by the GoPro on the drone, however all it picks up is the sound of the propellers (because it's about an inch away!). I have recordings of avalanches up close, and used those for the sound, added in post. I'm always afraid of crashing too! Especially when flying close to the ground - if you get a rock between you and the drone, it loses signal and you can easily lose the drone.

@@oldmech619 3 years ago I scored on clearance at Target the original DJI Mavic Pro 4K drone and it’s little brother the DJI Spark, for $425 and $199 which was a steal. Both of them absolutely blew my mind, it is one of the best purchases of my life and one of few that truly “does everything they said it does”. It is completely mind blowing to fly 1-3 miles away completely out of sight and be watching a nice big HD video feed on my iPad, and be able to press 1 button and hands free these things will fly themselves home and land on their takeoff point with accuracy the size of a license plate. Exactly like a SpaceX rocket booster returning to its pad. And my drones are several generations old (not that they’ve had any major evolutions since then, just incrementally longer range, flying time, and video bitrate.) If you ever thought about getting one, do it! You don’t have to drop 2 Grand on the latest model. Tons of used kits out there. Also my biggest fear was always to crash and lose my investment. Well I can say now you have to be foolish/reckless to do that. These drones are Damn reliable as long as you follow the rules of flying responsibly and stop yourself from getting carried away taking risks.

@@steiner554 - I'm not sure what he's flying, but the farthest I ever took one of my DJI drones was a bit over 3 miles out over flat ground. I gained quite a bit of extra range by installing little plastic dishes over the antenna with foil on them. That made the antenna more directional than omnidirectional, but gave them more power in that direction. I'd imagine with actual custom equipment one could go quite a bit farther, though battery life would become an issue. At 3 miles out and back with minimal wind I still only had about 20% battery life left.

It’s amazing that the drone even plays its own orchestral beat music . I thought only humans plugged into sound everywhere they went, but drones do it too.

This is perfection, and I don't see a single edit. I don't think anyone has captured an avalanche in such perfect conditions, so well, ever. Great work, this is going to get millions of views and deserves them!

the most impressive part is that when he first got the close footage, the pilot didn't brought back the drone to be sure the recording is safe. But instead, took the risk of loosing everything at the top of the mountain.

Pretty unique footage - outstanding flying! This is classic avalanche terrain folks. If you're in the hills in winter, you seriously don't want get yourself underneath a hanging bowl like that. They can trap huge quantities of snow, and it has to go somewhere...

You are a BIRD trapped in a human body. Your ability to maintain spatial awareness in both the micro and macro scale of that flight is remarkable. Excellent work.

Thanks so much :). I definitely struggled the the GoPro in my panic. It felt like it took me forever to get a battery on and the GoPro going and in the air. 5 seconds later and it would t have been nearly as good. I got lucky :)

Are you a DJI FPV Pilot per chance? I have the Mavic Pro and Spark which obviously maintain level flight at all times unless you enable FPV mode but even then they travel along a horizontal axis of perfectly flat altitude. I have been extremely curious how different it feels to pilot one of these true FPV drones that is entirely untethered from gravity.

All I can say is wow. Good timing to be there at that time, thanks for capturing and sharing in such a cool way. Had no idea those fpv drones could range all the way up to the top there. Very interesting to see how an av of that scale moves through the land at this time of year.
