Great video. Before the premiere of Avatar 2 I said that freediving coaches will have a golden age thanks to this film, because many people will want to try diving on one breath. It's good that you talk about these issues that can distort this beautiful passion. Thanks!

thanks. we'll have to see if this movie brings more people to the freediving community. One good start woukd be for the Avatar team to be open about how they do these breathholds. But then again it's Hollywood. It's all about creating an illusion ✌️

@@gertleroy the team is open if you look into it and watch the behind the scenes and Kirk's talks but the media couldn't care less about the technical aspects. All the media cares about is the headline. They won't report on the technical aspects.

I had wondered about that. Thanks for clarifying. David Blaine did o2 breathing for his world record attempt I remember. He did around 19mins or so.

But even with breathing pure O2, your CO2 level will still build up, and that is what stops most people from stopping a breath hold. Doesn't a 7 min breath hold on O2 feel absolutely awful? - all that CO2? Or does something else happen that makes it easier?

good observation. that's why o2 assisted breath holding goes together with hyperventilation. to get rid of high Co2 and there is no risk of low o2 because you've been breathing pure O2. A trained freediver who holds his breath for 18 minutes on pure o2 told me he started feeling light contractions around minute 7, and it took a long time until they became stronger. So with that information I'd say no, Kate Winslet did experience high Co2

For a second I kinda felt bad for myself about this. I mean I’ve been training hard to hold my breath longer then I would see this in news that a “non freediver” holds a record of 7mins…. I thought I was a slow learner or sort of.. 😢 Thank you for the clear explanation it kinda brings me some relief

Hollywood is fake. Always keep that in mind. And with Hollywood the whole media. I believe since the pandemic we can no longer rely on the news. We have to search for the truth ourselves. Interesting times are coming 🙏

@@gertleroy from the interview it sounds like she's an apnea champion 😅🤣 also, I wonder if she actually did something during this breath hold? because I don't think she was just laying there holding her breath. which would make the 7 min just that much more impressive 🥰 I can't wait to see the movie

I practice freediving and when I've heard the news I thought that she must be real special or that probably she's Kevin Kostner and Jeanne Tripplehorn daughter... 🤭 Also there's another theory... She trained a lot since Titanic... 🤭 Jokes apart, even with some help, it's not easy for everyone to achieve what she achieve, so she's got merit!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Thanks for your videos and all your tips!... 😉👌🏼

thank you. whether a 7minute breath hold on oxygen is easy or not can only be properly assessed by people who have done oxygen assisted breath holds. I haven't done that yet, and I assume you haven't either. People who do have experience with o2 breathholds tell me it's fairly easy. And I believe it is cause on o2 you can hold your breath 2,5 to 3x longer than on normal air. peace 🙏

@@gertleroy, I haven't... My personal best it's 5'16", but I'm training to achieve 6'30"!... It's my main objective!... I might never achieve it, but I'll keep trying it naturally.

@@gertleroy Pure O2 holds are pretty wild. A friend of mine and I tried it once. At the time my max static was 6:34, and my friend was just shy of 5 minutes. On pure oxygen her managed 11 something (I forget the number of seconds) and I did 14:16. It was really cool, and I had almost no urge to breathe until around 9ish minutes. That said as fun as it was it also felt very far out of our realm of training, and we decided to not pursue it further.

@@isaacpearson7398 nice. yeah it's a discipline on its own and more meant doe either setting Guinness records or for other purposes like in this case movie making. I think it has little to do with freediving itself. That being said I for sure wanna try it 😁

I thought it was strange that the media pushed this as a big PR move for the movie too, to me it seemed to undermine work of other actors who had training and explained more about what they had going in before holds.

Ah that makes sense. But I was discussing this with a friend and they told me they knew of someone who is not a free diver but a tuba player or oboe player(I can’t remember) and they could hold their breath for 9mins. I have no idea if this is true.

most likely not. if they would, they woukd be at leasr national record holders for their country if they woukd compete in official static apnea competitions
