When it comes to the league of villainy that scours across all fandom, one villain comes to mind who reigns supreme over the others. The leader of the anti-bender revolutionary group known as the Equaliists, Amon. Born under the name Noatok, Amon was cold, calculated, and driven to rid the world of benders to bring in an age of equality. Unfortunately, his actions were deemed extreme by the United Republic Council and he became Avatar Korra’s number one target.
On the surface, I think we can all agree Amon was a bit of a radical. However, was there anything he said that wasn’t the truth? From the days of the one hundred year war, bending has always been the core of all issues and has perpetrated the inequality and injustice many non-benders face in the modern avatar era. Also, compared to other villains, Amon’s actions were less evil and more hovered on the border of vigilantism. So the question we have to ask is Amon actually the hero in this story? In today’s CBR video we’re going to answer just that but looking at ten specific moments from the Legend of Korra. These moments will range from specific things he did to exploring Amon’s ideology.

I truly believe Amon/Noatak had good intentions and that he really wanted to make a positive difference. But his anger, much like Anakin Skywalker, got the better of him. I felt he needed someone to reach out to him and help him c through his delusions. That’s why I was so sad that they killed him, I had hoped Korra would have a moment with him, like she did with Kuvira, along with tarrlok so they could truly redeem themselves

I’m not in any way saying ur wrong, cuz you’re not. But to me I like to think of it differently. Like I don’t see Amon as azula or even Ozai, I c him more like Jet or another anti hero, that would turn good in the end, or at least wrk his way towards it. Along with tarrlok’s support and love for his brother. And I believe with all my heart Amon still loves his brother too. Like their brotherhood relationship to me kinda reminds me a little of Raya and namari, if they were sisters.

'Bending is the cause of all wars, where's the lie in that?' This seems to be true, but if you look at it a bit longer you'll see that it is not. In short, bending isn't the reason people are oppressed, bending is just the means that's used to oppress. In the legend of korra, we got to see the life of Avatar Wan, who lived in a time where people did not have bending abilities. However, there was still inequality. In that case, the people with better weapons oppressed the peasants. Bending is not the cause of conflicts, unevenly distributed power is. And that problem will keep existing if bending doesn't exist. It even exists in the real world, where more money equals more power. And as a second counterargument to this video, Amon wasn't wrong to point out that people were being oppressed. But his solution to the problem was. Benders can stop oppressing non benders without their bending getting taken away. Especially because bending is so important to the whole Avatar world. It has lead to so many breakthroughs, and is a great way to generate power.

@Asef Chowdhury no, not really. Means to oppress are everywhere. Take away one, another takes it's place, and the oppression will go on until the root of the problem is addressed.

I like to believe that Amon had a "Seismic Sense" for Bloodbending. Like he can use his Psychic Bloodbending to feel the actions of those around him. Meaning thats how he knew what Tarloq was about to do on the boat. He could feel his motions with the blood bending. Which honestly would be a terrifying and amazing method of Combat Knowledge for water benders with the ability to bloodbend. Like look at Katara. She refused to bloodbend. But what if she got in touch with the power just enough to learn this Sense? That would be an amazing power boost to her already high combat prowess

Was. I agree it’s a good argument for non-benders having power in the city but he wasn’t replaced by a non-bender, and while there’s nothing inherently wrong with that it is a little odd. We also aren’t explicitly shown any non-bending police, which I think is a shame. I think, and you are welcome to disagree with me; that it would have been a good idea to hold off on giving Korra the ability to restore bending; for Lin to continue operating in the police force without bending, and ideally be shown hiring non-benders and/or working alongside her formerly metal bending officers.

Metal bending is incredibly useful I’m sure, but it would go a long way towards justifying their attitude towards the problem Amon was trying to solve if it was just a useful tool and not a defining part of who Lin was that she fell apart without.

I don’t think bending has anything to do with genetics, nonbenders can ghzce children who are benders. For example none of katara or tophs parents were benders and they were two of the most powerful benders in their respective elements.

Mabye if Amon waited a few years he'd see the Harmonic Convergence, see new airbenders and figure a way to unlock non-benders bending. There's actually an equivalence in the real world, where people have some genes, such as red hair, that are hidden until unlocked, usually by radiation.

Here's the thing though, Amon hates bending on principle. He doesn't want more of it. He wants it gone. Having more benders would create more of the problems Amon states bending causes. To him, it would essentially be giving everyone a weapon of mass destruction.

I wish I've seen Amon bend a lot more. I wish I've seen more of him in the series. It's a shame they just let him die like that. he's such an interesting character. I hope they would show more of Amon in the expanded Avatar world. would love to see it.

If Noatak only wanted power than he wouldve gotten it a long time ago. With Korra being a tool in the spiritual side there was nobody who couldve stopped him to become leader at least in the southern water tribe. Infiltrating other regions, taking their strongest benders out, replacing their leaders with puppet leaders and gaining power and wealth wouldve been very easy for him. Tarrlok himself paralysed a room full with the top benders of each element like it was nothing. An evil Noatak would be like Sozin 2.0 just this time Ruko would be more than useless. No, he really saw that bending is too destructive in the hands of humans and wanted to better the world.

I feel like taking everyones bending ability would make technology weaker. For example no fire Benders no electricity (at least if we look at this from episode where lightning Benders make it) etc. Amon action might be good. But he just choose wrong way to it

Um, not really. We can generate electricity today without firebenders. Why can't they learn to do that too? We see by the time of Legend of Korra technology has advanced considerably. To the point that during the Equalist Revolution the tech used by Amon's forces could defeat benders in battle. As science and technology advance in this world, bending becomes more and more obsolete. Why rely solely on bending when you can make machines that can do the work of a hundred benders?

His homeworld (titan) had literally gone into poverty and famine while he was banished from it by(what they called) an absurd idea until he was the last titan left. I guess it was farfetched for him to believe that every single civilization and people where going to die of overpopulation and lack of resource in the coming years, but he just wanted to teach a lesson to all of the worlds to keep there resources and not to overpopulate just because they choose to.

Yes. But perhaps Amon didn’t know that, or hoped he could figure out a solution for that before it became an issue. Worth noting: Yakones bending was taken away with a different method from what Amon used so we don’t have proof that it doesn’t block future generations, though it seems highly unlikely Amons method would be multi-generational. Also the next generation would have a hard time learning since all the former benders would be out of practice. Doing the motions isn’t necessarily the same as actually bending the element.

I loved the way Amon beat korra in almost every encounter he spared her and then beat her again took her bending then alomost won a 1v1 as you probably know in pop culture and especially kids shows the hero always win and Amon never lost so

@@szla2491 Amon used a form of blood bending to permanently block a persons chi. That doesn’t necessarily make him a hypocrite though. It’s entirely possible that he resented that fact, and would have removed bending through a technique that didn’t require bending if he knew how.

I agree. But can also see how after coming soo close, having it all collapse so quickly could be demoralising. Even his closest lieutenant turned on him the moment his bending was revealed, never mind the ‘good’ he had done with it.

I'll leave a rational comment, and, then, a delulu one 😗. Season one was my favorite, due to how beautifully and not rushed they introduced the show and the characters, but also due to the main antagonist's backstory. It did make me feel sad, and I still wish they'd at least make an alternate ending where he'd reconcile with his brother and leave the rest of their lives in peace or using their abilities for a good cause (yes, I know Amon took his bending away). Additionally... He was my favorite character, why did they have to kill him off like that 😭. Fell so hard when I first saw him, kept watching almost exclusively to see more scenes of Noatak! One of the rare occasions I had a crush on cartoon characters...sniff.

While I will admit Amon had a point when it comes to making benders and non-benders have equal rights in republic city, is the way to go about doing that REALLY to go around taking people's bending? Chi-blocking people? That's stripping people of their individuality. Wouldn't it be better to solve it via diplomatic means by merely having new laws passed that makes the societal position of benders and nonbenders equal? That way, benders are able to maintain their ability which allows them to keep their individuality, but they're on the same citizen class as nonbenders.

Tell me if I am wrong... Let’s say Amon succeeds and he rids the world of bending, he himself is a bend and at whatever point he could kill any non-bender ( which is now everyone except Amon ). If his plan was to succeed ho would be sort of the “ kind/ruler”, this wouldn’t be a good thing even if he is trying to serve justice. Crimes would also take place and it would be his responsibility to deal with it and he might not always make the right decision because of his thought that he is the strongest. Lastly, he might change and might abuse his power and no one would be strong enough to stop him that is if he rids the all nations from bending. ( BTW I haven’t finished the video yet so I am not sure if he is going to talk about this)

Amon is the reason why I can watch this series. Amon gives me hope, that this series can be "better" if I continue to watch it. Luckily they create something great in S3. I almost stop after my big disappointment with S1, and the bad story in S2.

Imagine if Amon would have worked with the red lotus. Zaheer's and Amon's ideologies making each other stronger. Both lacked each others visions. Amon lacked the vision that equality in rights wasn't achievable with political and diplomatic differences sometimes even determined by who you are born as. Like the difference of being born a farmer's child or the child of the fire lord. And of course the avatar not being allowed to exist anymore due to limitless potential. And Zaheer lacked the vision that despite his dream of achieving a natural state, conflicts would still arise and that benders would have a distinct advantage over non benders in such conflicts.

That would make no sense. Amon and Zaheer would be enemies. Zaheer believes in total loss of government and the freedom to do whatever you want, which includes the freedom to bend. Amon believes the opposite. He not only believes in a strong government but a strict one that forbids people from bending. In fact, Zaheer would most likely target Amon since he's trying to become a political leader and Amon would target Zaheer since he's a known bending criminal.

Also amon was right but if he wasn't a blood bender and had the power to remove bending without blood bending he would've won and cause the people who believed him saw that he is a blood bender but if he wasn't he might've won and if all nations people had elements from the start they would've had bending and the other generations even sokka would have bending cause only air bender were in the air nation so if they had all bending amon wouldn't had been the villain and if there were blood benders more I believe they would have made it that the avatar can use to take blood lightening and lava

Lieutenant was a non bender and Amon mind using his own bending to kill the guy after he discovered he was a bender. He doesn’t care about the non benders one bit. He just took advantage of the situation they were in to get their support so he could get revenge on the avatar.

The core of Amon's belief wasnt about bending itself. Its the inequality of bending ability itself. Not everyone was born of bending abilities. Thats the problem. Knife can also be a very useful tool for good, while also for bad like killing. But the difference is everybody have access to that, nobody was born with knives already attached to them, & it can always be taken off people should they try to bring harm to others. Bending on the other hand, you get the idea.. And the worst part about it is that humans was never supposed to have bending abilities, it comes unnaturally, remember that it was lent by the lion turtle, then human caused mayhem regardless whether its for good of bad so they just simply want to bother with a creature that is impossible to control. So human not having bending abilities should never be a problem in the first place. A world without bending would just be a world resembling our real world. Progress would be slower ofcourse, but when was progress ever be the core of human beings existence? Never, it has always been about survival first, in every era, then progress comes to those who survives with better resources. Thats all there is to it. Amon was always about equality. There was no way to make everyone a bender. But then he somehow have an ability to make everyone equal by taking away their bending. So he chose the former. It was never about bending itself.

Amon really did seem like the hero and when he is exposed as a bender it feels weird that all the equalists just gave up but in the real world the communist movement one of its creators Friedrich Engels was a factory owner a boss but the communist movement didn't fall apart when the communists found out they kept fighting as everyone is a bit of a hypocrite sometimes if everytime someone was a hypocrite we quit nothing in this world would change or even get done

Thats a good point, but unfortunately is in the past. Also Sokka is very close to a number of benders, and so it would be easy for Amon to discount him.

You're wrong about a couple of things. Amon thought all bending was evil, but he was absolutely wrong on this one. Yes, there were evil benders like Ozai & Azula & yes, the gang members he fought deserved to have their bending away just like Ozai & Yakone deserved to have their bending taken away. You're asking what Amon did was different from what Batman did. It's simple. Batman went through the trouble of protecting actual civilizations even though he might have at points the wrong way. Lin was chief of the police & yeah, she did become a vigilante, tore down Tenzin's house, etc. However, let's be honest. Amon was going to take away her bending anyway, so Lin did the right thing by not telling him Korra's location. Let's not forget he was on the verge of taking away Bolin's bending as well. Once Yakone deserved to have his bending taken away. In response to Korra fighting Amon, it was her job to restore balance even though she may not have been the best at doing her job, but that's another story.

Iroh told Korra this in one of the episodes. Amon, Kuvira, Zaheer, and Hiroshi all did what they did due to the unbalance, but the path they chose to execute their decisions was the corrupted one.

The only way to peace in this would is to absorb pains and do nothing because some feed by oppressing others and are not ready to stop this. In my country Nigeria that is the problem. So those who you fight for will even rise against you for selfish reasons
