Can I say too that from a martial arts perspective she seems to have quite good form. I don’t know whether she has a history of MA training but she’s very convincing if she hasn’t. Also - I'm 90% sure that Zuko didn't have a "notebook" in the original animation, but that change really declutters the plot. I've seen people think it's weird that Aang just has book with all of the answers to it, and it's awfully convenient how he has a notebook that has all of this information about the Avatar that Aang just happens to need to know... but... it makes SENSE. This guy has been OBSESSED with hunting the Avatar for THREE YEARS - he has absolutely no patience for apathy. He's been taking notes the whole journey, doing research, collecting Avatar-related artifacts (like the little statues on the shelf) and Zuko still has Uncle Iroh there to guide him without just giving him the answers and doing everything for him. It's not a far-fetched idea -- and it's planting a seed... that Zuko is someone that Aang can LEARN from, that Zuko has a lot of knowledge that he could TEACH Aang. Yes? Actually, it's two seeds. Who knows what the other one is?

This for me is the most world breaking moment for me, I just can't accept this change that the Avatar changes to another character. I'd rather see Aang and go into Avatar state and by that sence "borrow the power" of the old avatars as in the Animated series. It just totally took me out of the show. I couldn't watch. But that's my problem more then the shows. But it didn't work at all for me

I think this was more confusing than clarifying… In the animated series, when Roku takes over, we have a better understand of why cuz we already know a lot more about the avatar state. But here, if you`re watching that for the first time, it looks like the avatar state = another avatar takes Aang’s body. And this battle was an important one when Aang understood that wherever he goes, war and destruction will follow, so it’s his responsability to protect people and not just run away.

People are saying how its too awkward between Suki and Sokka but they are both from villages that kept to themselves in fear of the fire nation. Neither of them have ever met someone they were immediately attracted to, they don't know what to do- it makes sense it's awkward and weird at the beginning, with both of them awkwardly showing off to their sudden new crush. I think it makes fantastic sense they're awkward and weird teenagers.

And Tamlyn Tomita, given the subject matter, took the role seriously along with the rest of the Japanese cast. When her character was angry, I was angry. When she was afraid, I was afraid. And when she was sad … oof. I’m so glad she’s getting bigger roles again. I look forward to her career’s third act.

Hate Commander Zhao, but Ken Leung did an INCREDIBLE job giving him nuance. He made him cunning, slimy, subtly ambitious, and really brought across that this Zhao started out as just a backwater grunt who got to big for his own hat. And I just had fun watching him be a villain. As for our girl Suki, she said in the Ember Island Player episode that she trained in for years in the art of stealth and then I thought 'huh why have we never seen you stealth?!' but here, yeah, I believe it. Girl needs a bell. And while I think we're all sad we didn't get Sokka in a dress, I think what they did with him and Suki instead is also lovely. The fact that she - despite all her skills - grew up just as sheltered and isolated as he did, and was pretty awkward in her flirting because she had just no experience with outsiders either. She sees in him the courage to leave that nicely sets up meeting her and the others again in later seasons, while he sees in her everything he SHOULD be - the protector, a powerful warrior - and he realizes how much he still has to learn (and perhaps how much this journey will actually help him become the leader his tribe needs?). And her being vulnerable with him after her makeup is off, as if she's been hiding part of what she wants and who she is all this time and only just allowed herself to be that open with someone. Chef's kiss! Plus I just think they had great chemistry! And of course, the Kyoshi fight is goddamn spectacular. Rewatching it now, I think some of the movements she made when bending that four element tornado are identical to the movements the airbenders around Jinora did in the S3 finale of Korra to summon the tornado, which I think is great consistency!

Someone call Zhao the Fire Nation Littlefinger and that is spot on. I hated him in the animated series and didn’t even care that he died. 😂 It was just the other way round for me. In the first episode, I loved everything except Zuco. Because I was just disappointed, he was not as angry as the one, I kmow and love from the animated series. Then I watched your reaction video and thought: "Ok, maybe I just have to not compare the characters and just get to know THIS Zuko. Then I watched the second episode and was so happy to see him get angry. So I just thought: "Maybe I spoke too soon, like you. 😅 Now this makes sense to me. I think Zuko in THIS series was just not angry before he met Aang, because he was between hope and doupt/disbelief. (As Iroh said: He doesn't want Zuko get his hopes up for nothing, just to be disappointed in the end) NOW that he KNOWS, that the Avatar is alive and the hope to get home became a real possibility, he just became so passionate and determined, that he has to feel negative emotions more intense and get frustrated over little things as the Zuko of the animated series. So he just became the Zuko, we know, because of Aang. 😄 And honestly, I love that decision of the authors. ❤

Pretty sure the air scooter part where Aang hits à piller is a reference to the animated serie's opening - When ut happens, Katara says "he has a lot to learn before he can save anyone"; While In the Netflix serie, Sokka says "right..There goes the savior of the world !" Which is his way of saying that Aang has a lot to learn, but in a Sokka-stic (sarcastic) way. I like how he eats and show how he doubts Aang. That's, indeed, the most Sokka way of doing it.

I usually am very much against the idea of remakes and reboots on principle, but if they can bring something NEW to the story, that can make all the difference. This series has done that quite well -- they are following the very broad strokes of the original AtLA story, but they are both cleaning up a lot of stuff as well as refocusing on different aspects and putting their own spin on things. This isn't just a retelling of the same story, but a reinterpreting of what the original story was trying to tell. Characters and storylines are similar enough for you to recognize, but different enough to feel like this is still a new experience. This may be the first 'remake' of a show I have actually liked.

It’s a live action ADAPTATION. If you watch this the same way you watch Marvel and DC movies knowing it’s not gonna be bar for bar what the source material is, and is a new flavor of a story you love, this show is a lot of fun. I’m genuinely hoping all the naysayers don’t prevent a Season 2 because there’s so much potential here.

Exactly! This! It’s incredibly unfair to expect the animated series to be even remotely the same as the live action. Both are great, and you can love both without hating on the other.

@@funnylilgalreacts exactly what I’ve been saying. The Animated Series is collectively considered one of the greatest animated shows in all of animated television. To expect the live action to be that, especially with both adapting a fictional world to real life, and having to do it in 8 episodes vs the 21 the animated series had is just insane. I’m excited to see a Book 2 and “Zuko Alone” in live action.

People need to remember, this was a children's show or at the very least a tween age show. This is a more adult version of the same series but still more in the early to mid teen years. If you are looking for the Game of Thrones version, it isn't going to happen. Nor is it going to be the childhood everyone ends up holding hands at the end version. It is something in between with elements of both.

I just have to point this out as a language nerd, but if you look closely at the letter that Gran Gran wrote to Katara with the waterbending scroll, you can see that the Inuktitut script is used as opposed to Chinese characters. Just another little thing that I appreciate that the show has done to honor the Inuit people and culture that the water tribes are inspired by !

Aang in the animated had trouble getting busy cuz he was an unfocused kid, more about fun and goofing off. Here he cant get busy cuz he's afraid to try stuff as his chaotic skills might make things worse, as they have before. Different choices, but equally valid.

I do like that little bit with Zuko and Katara, which her flashing back to her mom being killed, as this helps cement the idea that she's connecting that pain and trauma with Zuko for them to work out later.

What I love most about this series is the relationship they have with Iroh and Zuko. They really delved deeper into that and I really like that. It really has you connect with zuko and Iroh so much more. I actually really like this series. It follows the plot of the original while moving along with the story. It changes some things but that is to be expected due to potential copyright infringement even though it’s probably the same company but there are still rules to follow. But it’s still good.

There's a TL;DR at the very bottom of this comment. THANK YOU for mentioning "from a beginner's standpoint!" In all the criticisms that I've scene of this show, some of it is valid because I have problems of my own w/ it as someone who grew up watching the OG show - That being said I still greatly enjoyed this adaptation. However, I've always noticed two common misconceptions or oversights or whatever the term for it is that people make about this show that makes me shake my head at much of the criticism I hear about it: *1. There are many who were expecting or hoping for a 1:1, 'copy and paste,' exact remake of the OG show.* Guys, that was *NEVER* going to happen. For a multitude of reasons. One being the nature of a 8-episode Netflix season where the episodes range from 45-60 minutes (360-480 minutes total) as opposed to a 20-episode cable show where the episodes are 25 minutes (500 minutes total). They don't have the same amount of total run time to work w/ so some thigns were going to get cut or changed to compensate. That's just how it is. Secondly, there are things that may work or be fair game in a cartoon that don't work as well or just flat-out does not work in live-action and vice-versa. Angela, you mentioned Sokka putting on make-up and a dress. There's another example in that very same episode w/ Aang strippin down to nothing but his underwear to ride the elephant koi. *A 12-year old little boy being almost naked riding on a giant eel - In a cartoon? Sure, why not! That's fair game! In fact, it might be cool! In live-action? Uhhhh...* For those two reasons, changes, additions, and omissions were inevitable. Some for the worse, some for the better! As long as the heart and soul of the OG show and what makes Avatar, 'Avatar," is still in tact, which I absolutely believe it is, then whatever changes, additions, and omissions come can absolutely work. It all comes down to execution. *2. From a beginner's standpoint!!!* You'd be surprised how many of fans of the OG show, whether they like this adaptation or not, don't seem to realize this adaptation is meant to appeal to NEW fans and viewers who may be interested in this show as much as it does to OG fans who loved and/or grew up w/ the OG show like us. Sozin's Comet was *16 YEARS AGO!!!* When the OG show first premiered back in 2005, *Netflix wasn't even a THING yet!!!* A whole new generation has passed since the OG show and a lot has changed, including viewing habits and audience tastes. And if you don't adapt or do something to try to bring in that new audience and generation, you run the risk of your IP becoming irrelevant and an obscure product of its time. Remember what Uncle Iroh said in 'Bitter Work?' "It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If you take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding others - the other elements and the other nations - will help you become whole!" That applies here w/ the Netflix show and the franchise as a whole. As much as we all *DEARLY LOVE* the OG show - If we insist on stubbornly clinging to it and rejecting & not opening ourselves to any adaptations or new stories that aren't exactly like it or perhaps even change some things here and there, all we're *REALLY* doing is hindering the growth of the franchise and discouraging newcomers and people outside the fanbase who want to give it a shot. By understanding others, the other forms of media, the other formats, and helping to foster, not hinder, that understanding and growth, the franchise can become whole. Regardless of how some may feel about the quality or lack thereof of the Netflix show, there is no denying the fact that it is a HUGE success! #1 show on Netflix worldwide and in over 80 countries! Massive press and media coverage in many outlets (Gordon was even on Jimmy Fallon!) The franchise has never been more popular than it is right now and it is entirely thanks to the Netflix show! So Albert Kim and the team behind it clearly must have done *SOMETHING* right and have an understanding and respect for the source material, otherwise it wouldn't be as successful as it has become. And because of its success and because there are so many newcomers and new fans out there who enjoy it so much, they'll be eager and willing to dive *DEEPER* into the franchise as a whole, not just the OG show! Korra, the comics, the novels, Avatar Studios' upcoming projects, *ALL THINGS* Avatar: The Last Airbender! TL;DR - Regardless of how you feel about the show, whether it's good or bad, if you are an Avatar fan, you should be happy and thankful it exists and that it has been as successful as it has been, because that is ONLY good news for the franchise that now has appeal and a soft spot for millions of people across now *MULTIPLE* generations - like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, DC, Nintendo, PlayStation, etc. The better this show does, the more Avatar we are going to get! And Bryke and Avatar Studios show *CAPITALIZE* on the massive momentum.

I had never seen the animations. Just me being lazy and not wanting to watch something with more than 2 seasons. But, a coworker suggested I watch Korra, and I loved it. So I actually watched this live action Avatar before any Avatar animation. Going in blind, I thought it was a little dark for a Y-7 animated rating, but I really enjoyed it. So much so, that I immediately jumped into the animated series where this live action left off and finished it, too! The only major difference I can see is the tone. The gang is just a little more playful and youthful in the animated series. Zuko is almost 1:1, which was well done by the live action actor. I love your reaction videos. Keep up the great work!

Really enjoyed your reaction and how open you are to this reimaging of the story (I am a huge fan of the animated show). I've now seen the entire LA show and loved it. Some of my favorite scenes in the LA are additions to the story. Also, I like your words about child actors, who IMO are doing a good job in the LA. I also appreciate your appreciation of Katara, how hopeful she is despite the incredibly deep trauma of seeing her mother killed by a firebender. IMO Katara has some wonderful quiet scenes in this series. Sokka is perfect, nuff said. And I really love the actor playing Zuko. he really seems like a somewhat lost teenager to me, both desperate and determined but also at times vulnerable.

Suki's mom is also Commodore Oh from Star TRek Picard s1, and that's how I recognized her at first and I was like, "OMG SHE'S AWESOME!" Suki and Sokka are both horrible at flirting and I love it. But yeah, Zhao is a lot less ruthless but a lot more manipulative and its a great take. But when Kyoshi manifested I about lost my sh*t lol, it was so cool. And they definitely saw Kyoshi, Suki and her mom's faces told the truth there. But when Roku and Kyoshi stepped out of Aang in the original show people saw them too so I think its probably still the case here.

I like how they describe Kyoshi as a master of the avatar state. Other avatars obviously had access to it as well, but none of them are described as "masters" of it. That alone is reserved for the one we know of as the fiercest warrior. And then we see in LoK that Korra (another headstrong woman and fierce combatant) has an easier time of moving in and out of it than Aang ever did. Seemingly at will.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this, or noticed it, but the scene where Sokka and Suki are about to kiss at the end only for the alarm bell to go off seems like a reenactment of the Karate Kid 2 scene where Daniel and Kumiko (played by Tamlyn Tomita) just started kissing only for the town alarm bell ringing and interrupting them at that moment. It was a nice touch that they added Tamlyn Tomita's character to the scene because just as she starts spying on them the bell goes off.

I love that Zuko isn't REALLY pissed off about the missing notebook, he's pissed off because he's been talking about honor for three years and finally caught the Avatar. Zuko was going home to reclaim his honor, finally! Only to turn around and find out that Aang... just left. He didn't try to fight Zuko, he didn't attack any firebenders, he didn't even say two words to the guy, he just took off. That's why that Katara moment at the end of [1x01], worked for me -- instead of Aang jumping up and swatting that fireball into a glacier, just covering Zuko's ship in ice. So Katara's waterbending, in-flight, but it's precise, fast, and strong enough to interrupt a moving Fire Nation projectile is actually really cool -- we'll come back to that.
