I love how Zuko's form changed after he learned the dancing dragon technique. Now his style looks more like that of a water-bender (more relaxed and fluid) and fits his now more calm personality.

Kevin Velazquez He also doesn't grunt anymore. When you watch him firebend in the first couple of seasons, almost every motion is followed by a grunt. Now, as you said, it's more calm because he has found a sort of balance, he's no longer angry and has found peace.

"You're betraying your people!" "That's not how I see it." Mai's decision was a lot more than just her love for Zuko. It was her finally taking a stand in life, her breaking free not just from Azula's orders, I'd say, but a life of parents telling her how to behave and repressing her. I think Mai fully understood Zuko for the first time. He was not betraying his people, he was betraying his *family*, the man who burned and banished him, something that surely had an impact on her too but she just brushed off by the time. But Zuko betraying them? That is a sign that she can no longer pretend that Ozai and Azula aren't horrible people. So she picks a side in the war, and it's the side of the jerk who dumped her for a greater good, but who looked her in the eyes this time because he actually listened to her, and that she inevitably still loves.

It's ok, it's open to interpretations. I like to think that that's the one conversation where they are being open and honest to one another (Zuko used to talk to her but was keeping a secret about Aang's death which was the source of his problems) and finally understand each other, he sees her heartbreak and she sees where he's coming from.

Azula: Because I'm a people person. *(Later)* Mai: I guess you just don't know people as well as you think you do. You miscalculated. I love Zuko more than I fear you. Azula: No, you miscalculated! You should've feared me more!! Azula's always in control and I'm sure she believed she could control others through fear alone ...but for the first time, she wasn't in control and she was wrong. And by how she was so quick to anger after what Mai said, you can tell how much this affected her. I don't think she ever thought someone would turn on her like this. Her shocked and surprised gasp after Ty Lee chi-blocked her also indicated as much.

StygianTraveler141 Which stare down? The one after Zuko locked Mai in the room or the one before that where they were arguing about whether or not Zuko was betraying his country? Because I loved both!! Both had so much tension and emotion! I especially loved the part where Zuko said "That's not how I see it" in response to Mai's "Saving it? You're betraying your country!" And I agree with what you said about Sokka having all that freedom.

This episode really shows some of the best non-benders/non bending moves. Like this guys are teenagers but Zuko can break metal with one kick/make an insane jump, Suki can do that foot swing thing/run on shoulders, Azula can do that plank-over-air move which means CRAZY levels of core strength, Sokka sword fights on a swinging rope/catches Zuko, and Mai can throw hard enough to sink blades into metal and still be so precise!

For me, I think Mai's realization here was as much about herself as it was about Zuko. Mai attached to herself to Azula because Azula allows her to break free from her parents, who controlled her life. I think in this episode, Mai realized that Azula hasn't freed her from that role- she's subsumed it. Now Azula is the one she must behave for, Azula is the keeper of her leash. THAT is why she picks now, of all times, to betray Azula.

The boiling rock part 1 and 2 (specially 2) are probably my favorite episodes. -The cool idea of this Alcatraz version of Avatar. -I enjoyed the bonding between Zuko and Sokka a lot. -I wasn't expecting for them to find Suki, and it was a relief cause i get worried about her when Azula mentioned her on the invasion. - The fact that Sokka could rescue his father at the end, and how they went through all this together like, fighting and plotting side by side. it was cool, i'm glad that it happened. -I loved how inventive that cooler-boat idea was. and i even liked that it failed, it kind of made it more realistic. and it also made sense, this prison is supposed to be very secure. - The whole battle at the end must be one of my favorites in the show! Ty-Lee vs Suki; Sokka and Zuko vs Azula, and all this above a gondola, above a boiling lake! - A guardian so committed and obsess of having the most security prison that he prefers to die before letting any prisoner escape. (he reminds me a lot of Javert from Les Miserables) - Also the fact that he was Mai's uncle and so she and Azula got to know about them there. - We got to see SO cool stuff from Suki and Mai (their fighting ability i mean. they were my favorites here) -The plot twist of Mai betraying Azula and helping Zuko to escape, and confronting and talking to Azula the way she did! -The plot twist of Ty-Lee doing the same thing and betraying Azula to help her friend Mai. And how Mai looked so shocked with the fact that Ty Lee risked so much for her! i truly feel like she didn't know how much Ty Lee esteemed their friendship until now. -And also the fact that this shows clearly that all this time Mai and Ty-Lee were aside Azula just because of the threatened she supposed to them. At the beginning they tried not to think too much about it and play along cause she was THE princess. But as Mai said, she loves Zuko more than she fears Azula, and Ty Lee just couldn't let her hurt her friend. AMAZING EPISODES!

Don't forget about Icebending. Although I know that you are correct that Lavabending is a subbendingform of Earthbending the creators didn't make that very clear for... quite a long time since the only persons we've seen bend lava have been Avatar Roku and the Avatar in the explanation from Roku about what the Avatar state is in episode 1 season 2. And it didn't help either that this Avatar was the one supposed to show what Firebending is capable of in the Avatar state, since Kyoshi already bended those huge pyramids...

@The Avatar True, I forgot that one. And since they all were supposed to demonstrate one bending discipline one could falsely assume that lava is a subform of fire, which it isn't.

Yup, that's how Azula is such an interesting vilain. She controlled her friends, even tho there was a point where Mai and Ty Lee both cared about Azula. Her journey is so interesting from that point, and if you remember the beach episode, Mai's life was about accepting what is "offered" to her, speak when she's spoken to. She actually expressed her feelings and herself for Zuko on this episode, she started to develop outside of the box she was in her entire life. Btw, Azula was going to use lightning against Mai, she would have totally died if Ty Lee hadn't do anything. And the actual line of that scene is "line them up for the warden", isn't it?

Azula's look when Mai said she loved Zuko more than she feared her- really painful. And her shocked gasp as she falls when Tai Lee attacked her- really cements one of my favorite moments and increases my admiration and love for her character, her- so many subtle hints....this is the beginning of the end, can't wait for future reactions.

i honestly think that when Tai Lee betrayed Azula it was the single most terrifying combat experience in Azula's life. The look on her face says it all. Imagine ONLY being valued and respected for your fire-bending (or w/e martial art) and then someone just TAKES IT AWAY. At this point Tai Lee is the only known character to have mastered anti-bending pressure points. It's like if superman had a side kick made of kryptonite and that dude just started trying to kill superman.

One this I love about these 2 episodes is how effective non-benders are shown as, Azula and Zuko are the only truly dangerous benders in these episodes, and neither of them ultimately do the most work, Sokka is the one that figures everything out and Mai is the person that takes out the most guards, plus Suki is who grabs the Warden. Will give props to the Warden though, he was willing to die for his pride of the prison.

The warden here, despite being absolutely an enemy, is an incredible and honorable character. He lets his wronged niece know about Zuko before even Ozai and very quickly tried to sacrifice his own life to stop extremely dangerous (to the Fire Nation) prisoners from escaping. He's the definite GOAT for Fire Nation side characters.

I'll never get over how Chit Sang just forgot about his girlfriend and his best friend in the second escape attempt. I think it almost would have been better to use Mei as a prisoner. Because the warden may have been willing to jump into the boiling lake himself rather than let the record be tarnished, would he have allowed his niece to be killed? but then that plot line of her betraying Azula wouldn't have played out. also it's Haru not Hyrule. (I think thats what you said, maybe I misheard)

Great episode, but my first language is Spanish and I saw this cartoon with the Spanish dub, and when Azula orders the guards to imprison her "friends" in Spanish it sounds so powerful when she hatefully says "encierrenlas, y que se pudran", uff, still gives me chills to this day and clearly demonstrates that Azula Is starting to break apart.

I'm feeling they're starting to get how important and great Azula is in this show, but still, it just pisses me off how they question her abilities (not in a good way like with the other characters - like Iroh for example) almost everytime. It feels they try to take any opportunity they can to try to downgrade the character beacuse they don't like her, and I absolutely HATE IT.

For the combustion bending, I'll die defending the theory that is imbalanced lightning bending. We know that using too much Yin or Yang energy when making a lightning causes an explosion, I'll always believe that if you study this effect and master it you'll be able to combustion bend =)

Hmm, it looks like fire bending combined with something else to me, maybe fire+air=combustion, but I doubt he knows air-bending so idk lol, but yeah what you said about it being imbalanced lightning bending does make sense.

Also remember what Zuko said: "[...] It keeps exploding in my face [...]". I know that this was probably unintentional but that line always made me think the way you described it. I was somewhat disappointed that when Aaron said _"Everybody that she [Azula] had that was her friend betrayed her"_ followed by Eric's _"She's driving people away."_, that when Calvin was about to respond to that, he didn't get the chance because Eric decided to move on to a different topic. I get that this happens, but I feel this was an opportunity for the Crew to delve more into Azula's more nuanced character-aspects, so I guess I was just disappointed that this -- once again -- didn't happen.

1.IMO Ty Lee>Mai, but this is actually the only time we really see Mai fight, she was clearly half-assing it before. If she could find proper motivation, she would soon become an almost unstoppable beast. 2. I do not care what the show says, that dress was holding Suki back, with it she struggled against Azulas physical attacks and now she can hold her own against Ty Lee.(although I think Ty Lee is still a bit better) That would be way to drastic a jump in skill, considering she was just training in prison and is not Iroh, for it to be believable otherwise.
@gunchar06
@gunchar06 7 жыл бұрын
@Max Mustermann Uhm i highly doubt that this dress held her back(it's made for fighting), and btw Azula basicly stomps Suki in the comics(and slaps TyLee after she casually dodged her, everything in the same sequence).
@maxmustermann9058
@maxmustermann9058 7 жыл бұрын
I knew everything you just said, I merely disreagarded some of that since it strained my suspension of disbelief and my explanation is more plausible. Azula also basically stomps Suki in the series so I do not know what you are trying to say with that point. The comics are just fanservice, pandering towards LOK, fuck them.
@gunchar06
@gunchar06 7 жыл бұрын
@Max Mustermann That makes no sense, Azula was always portrayed as extreme good with non-bending skills(agility, acrobatic, martial arts, etc..., also stats like durability and strength). So why should it be surprising that Suki can't match her(who is smaller, and in the series never rly as good as Ty Lees )? Suspension of disbelief would maybe make sense with Katara or Zhao but not with Azula, and i don't find your explanation very plausible(Ty Lee had zero problems in the Kyoshi dress, regardless her complains).
@maxmustermann9058
@maxmustermann9058 7 жыл бұрын
I can buy Suki not being able to match Azula, but her then almost equal fight against Ty Lee makes no sense, after all Ty Lee is a bit more physically capable than Azula. I do not know what you are trying to say with Zhao or Katara. The dress is just pretty impractical despite the way it is portrayed in the show. The show could also say a sheet of paper is a good defence against grenades, but you still would not buy that, would you. My logic is simple: Suki in obviously impractical dress: pretty unimpressive in Season 1, better in season 2 but can not compete physically with Azula Suki in practical clothing: can physically compete with Ty Lee There is nothing justifying that increase in skill, except for the fact that she is wearing more practical clothing, so it would make sense for that to be the reason. Even if you disagree, can not you see why I think it is plausible ?
@vindifference
@vindifference 7 жыл бұрын
I can totally believe that Suki can go toe to toe with Ty Lee simply because of the nature of that fight. The hand-to-hand nature of that chi blocking is something that Suki would have been trained to deal with, and is in some ways simpler than Azula's fighting style. Let the record show that apart from gymnastic moves, Ty Lee is very unlikely to use her legs in an offensive manner in serious combat, unlike Azula. The earlier performance with Suki and Azula is rather irrelevant since such a fight was done under entirely different circumstances; not only different attire, but with weapons and bending involved, on a more stable platform.

Zuko and Sokka work so well together! And Suki is a fucking badass, I love how that big guy said "Hey uh, fellas, I think your girlfriend's taking care of it." it's like he didn't know who's girlfriend she was Zuko's or Sokka's, the fights were awesome and yeah Zuko has gotten more comfortable fighting Azula and Sokka has more confidence too, I loved how they were taking turns against Azula attacking her. I really wished Sokka gave some props to Zuko when they came back for helping them save their dad, he would certainly not have been saved without Zuko's help, Zuko looked so happy for Katara and Sokka when he saw them hugging their dad, and I really wished Sokka thanked him in front of everyone or Katara came up to him and thanked him personally. And I don't like how Mai treats Zuko at all, Zuko left her a letter because he cares for her and to protect her so he could go fight for what he believes in, and she just basically spits in his face by throwing the letter at him and saying that he's "betraying his country." Zuko did what's right by turning away from the Fire Nation, but Mai doesn't care at all about Zuko's mission to stand up to his abusive tyrannical father, she doesn't understand him and just says he's defying his country, that's not someone Zuko should be with at all. Oh and Southern Raiders hype!!!!

Does anybody think this show is very similiar to Star Wars? I saw this show when it came out and the firebenders remind me of the empire. I guess Ozai is he emporer and Zuko is kinda like Darth Vader. The rebels are the other three nations. Either way I love the fuck out of this show. Wonderful character development. That is why I love shows more than movies because you can develop charaters overtime. When I was a kid watching this when I was 12 back in 2008 I didn't realize how good it truly was. Watching the show 30 times more I can see how amazing the charater development is. Keep up the good work guys you are going to love the Finale!!

About the "flying fire bending", Azula flew in one or two episodes before, but just her. Maybe because she is a prodigy and stuff? Maybe too powerful fire bending allows flight or something, maybe. Let me explain COMBUSTION MAN. I can't explain the science very well, but combustion bending is simply focusing your firebending, which is air combusting, into a focused stream. Like, lightning bending is just turning fire into it's other from of energy, plasma. It's still fire, but superheated. Lightning, superheated, and combustion, explosive.
