A copy and paste from another video about zuko vs. azula: Jeremy Garner: "Allow me a moment of nerdiness here. Throughout the entire fight, Zuko barely moved from that one spot. He stood his ground the whole time. Through out the series, Zuko was always on the move, always running, always after something. And here, we see that he's done running. He stands his ground against someone who has antagonized him for years, someone who always seemed so above him. Only when his friend was in danger did he ever move out of that spot, and it nearly cost him his life. I dunno, I just find that kinda cool."

My point was pretty clear. I pointed that out because in my opinion, Zuko had the upper hand not just because of his new techniques, but because she wasn't in her right mind and he took advantage of that- just like she took advantage of Katara's position and counted on Zuko taking the hit. In any other circumstance I dont recall her ever needing to waste energy on him, he always did it for her- which is why the fight is interesting.

I actually did feel sad and a bit of pity for Azula. Keep in mind that she is still 14 years old and she's already descending into insanity like this. Regardless of whether or not people like Azula or not, she still had one fucked up childhood as well and I mean this in regards to how she was taught and raised. Makes me wonder what she'd be like if she wasn't raised during times of war and if she had loving parents that gave her positive attention. "But what choice do I have?! Trust is for fools! Fear is the only reliable way." That's just sad if she honestly believed that for the majority of her life. And yeah, her mom never called Azula a monster, Azula just assumed that. What I found so sad about her "mom" saying she loved Azula in that scene was the fact that it was probably Azula's own psyche trying to comfort her. Trying to say its okay to love and that her mom did love her, but because Azula doesn't really understand the concept of love, she basically rejects it and because of that, she just breaks. I would say that's some major inner conflict there now. All of that and I loved how they built up her eventual descent into madness. It was very well-done, in my opinion. The Last Agni Kai was so beautifully animated and scored. I especially loved how everything was muted except for the sounds of the firebending. I also loved how sad the whole thing felt too. It was epic yes, but it was essentially two siblings fighting to the death. Aang/Ozai's duel was also beautifully animated and scored and I just loved the contrast in cinematography and music between their duel and Zuko/Azula's duel. God, one more reaction vid left 😭😭

Yeah I totally agree, If Azula had grown up surrounded with love and proper attention I doubt she wouldn't have turned out this way, se would obviously still have that fiery personality of hers, but I doubt she would be as cold as she is in the show. Her breakdown and downfall was done perfectly, her mom never called her a monster but Azula did just assume that and just kept that with her her whole life and I also loved how it seemed like it was Azula's psyche trying to comfort her about her mom saying she "loved" her, it was truly a very sad moment.

When the Joker is your father, you'd be crazy too. Azula's character arc is one of my favorites on this show. What the crew forgets is that they are all just children at this point. Azula's cruelty and insanity is a product of her upbringing under Ozai. Had Zuko not been given the extra attention from his mother and guidance from Iroh, he could have very well fallen just as far as Azula did. The agni kai is one of my favorite scene of the whole show. That score alone was amazing.
@gabrielcarrasco9078
@gabrielcarrasco9078 4 ай бұрын
The live action show highlights it even further. Ozai is changed slightly. But he seemed to prefer Zuko, and took jabs at her constantly. Her mother abandoning her and thinking her a monster, and her father who never showed approval. She shifted her rage to Zuko.😊
@ThatBrunetteFromCali
@ThatBrunetteFromCali 7 жыл бұрын
The reason Zuko took Katara with him is because he knew that it would be a challenge to face her; and his chances of survival were slim. If anything bad was going to happen Katara would be the one that saves him. But when he was there and saw her insanity, he knew he could beat her. Azula has always been a controlled fighter and very calm. But now she's chaotic and all over the place.
@MetallicaRules
@MetallicaRules 7 жыл бұрын
Let's face it, if there's one person you want on your side, it's definitely going to be Katara. Hell, I would probably pick her over Aang. Along with being an incredibly powerful water bender, which Zuko has witnessed first hand on several occasions, Katara does have her healing ability, which comes in handy in the next episode.

Simply put Azula is a better survivor than Zuko. Zuko had his mom to protect him from Ozai but Azula was "favored" which means she was, as a child, forced to survive a megalomaniac willing to maim and scar his own children on her own. This terrible situation forced her to embrace evil as it was her only strategy for survival. Its why she can have no redemption. For her to be anything less than what she is and she would destroyed just like Zuko. She said it herself, what choice does she have? Doesn't excuse her behavior, she is a monster, but she turned into a monster to survive and its the only way she knows how to survive. In the end both children were severely damaged by their home life, difference being one rejected it and was cast out and the other embraced it and thrived.
@opaquea2448
@opaquea2448 7 жыл бұрын
I dont think she embraced evil in the sense you're implying. If anything I feel that Ursa provoking Ozai (who already had issues about being put second) was the start of this entire cycle. Because of Ursa, Ozai decided grant her wish and treated Zuko like scum (whereas before he was a mellow dude and loved Zuko enough to save him from drowning) and due to this Ursa spent most of her time coddling Zuko. We see a panel where Ursa is doting on Zuko laughing with him while Azula is walking nearby being ignored until she lights a flower aflame- finally getting her moms attention. She acts cruel because her father only praises her when she does and her mom finally pays attention to her- even if it's negative attention. We literally only ever see Ursa scolding Azula while she smiles and spends time with Zuko- same with Iroh. He sent Azula a doll while he gave Zuko a sleek weapon from war- then he spends his time treating Zuko like a son and standing by him even when Zuko is cruel to him but when it comes to Azula Iroh says 'She's crazy and needs to go down'. Like- the fuck? I don't like Ozai but its heavily implied through his scenes with Azulon that he only wanted his fathers favor. He was clearly bitter that Iroh, the eldest, was treated differently. Why do you think Ozai, the youngest, doted on his second born (other than her being a prodigy) while Iroh, the eldest, doted on the first born after his own son died. Its a vicious cycle that began with Ursa and ended with her- if she had kept Azula safe from Ozai's influence after she basically bruised his pride than maybe Azula wouldn't have felt hated by her own mother and had to torment her brother just to gain attention in a nation where cruelty is favored over love. She couldn't handle love because no one ever gave it to her until she was too far gone.
@dariensampson7913
@dariensampson7913 7 жыл бұрын
I was implying pretty much the same thing. She grew up to be hard and vicious because she always had to look out for herself. She was jealous of the affection Zuko got as first born which translated into protection from their fathers influence. She can't change what she is because her methods were how she rationalized and survived her entire life.

- This is a copy/paste from Patreon - First, I should say that this doesn't justify anyone's action, but I feel it is important to look at things from all angles. You say that both Zuko and Azula chose their own path, but is that entirely true? Azula was talented from birth and favored by Ozai, who encouraged ruthlessness. Zuko was pretty much ignored by their father because of his weakness, and was primarily taken care of by their mother, who was a much gentler person. After their mother left the Fire Nation, Zuko had Iroh. Zuko was mostly guided to the path that he is on now, and so was Azula. Given her only source of guidance (Ozai), how else could she have turned out. She was doomed to end up this way from the start. Again, this doesn't justify her actions, but I would say she can definitely be classified as a victim in all of this.

This along with the fact that I do believe Azula truly did care for her mother and her friends, despite how she acted. She showed the capacity for remorse when she hurt Ty Lee's feelings in The Beach. She's grossly misguided and the same could have happened to Zuko as well.

For me, there are a million things to talk about and praise in this brilliant and beautifully crafted penultimate episode but nowadays when I watch this episode I think back to episode 3. After seeing how powerful firebenders really are during the comet, think about how powerful Monk Gyatso must have been to defeat as many firebenders as he did. That fight must have been insane. It shows that Aang got his fun-natured side from Gyatso but it also shows that Gyatso really did teach Aang how to be a truly powerful airbending master.

What makes Azula such a brilliant villain is you DON'T feel sympathy for her. You feel PITY. It was a tragic chain of events in her life that built to her downfall, and to someone who perhaps didn't know Azula but heard her story would find it to be sad. But she alone was responsible for her own demise. Everything she did, all the choices she made, all the people she manipulated; that was all DIRECTLY her fault. So she DOES deserve defeat, and we as an audience recognize that. But instead of painting her as the victim of tragedy, all you end up feeling for her is empty pity.

OH MY GOD i love this comment!!! i can understand _why_ Azula became the way she did and a part of me does feel bad for her. but i also feel like her downfall was inevitable. for example, comparing characters like Jet or Hama to Azula. Jet and Hama have done extremely dubious things, _however,_ while their behavior was immoral, they clearly only developed those mindsets out of self defense. Jet because of his family and Hama because of her imprisonment. and afterwards, they lash out in the ways they do as they're still from targeted lower social classes. Jett wanted to destroy that town in Book 1 because he wanted to wipe out Fire Nation presence. Hama was imprisoning Fire Nation civilians because she wanted to hurt the Fire Nation the same way they hurt her. Azula, though, her mindset and behavior can _not_ be excused as an act of psychological self defense. she did have a troubled childhood after being parented by Ozai, but she then takes the consequences of that and unleashes them on innocents that have absolutely *zero* connection to her father or the Fire Nation. and also, she lashes out on people while she remains part of the highest social class there is, Fire Nation royalty. to compare them further, Jett and Hama would be akin to mice going around trying to hurt random cats because specific cats have hurt them before. meanwhile Azula would be akin to a lion terrorizing an anthill despite ants having no history at all of doing anything to her, and she's only doing it because she can't think of anything else to do. i really love the way this comment is points out the difference between sympathy and pity. i feel bad for Azula because she was raised the way she was, but i do not root for her or even believe redemption is possible because of how she reacts to her circumstances.
@impartialthrone2097

I don't get these interpretations of Azula. They may have been her actions, but I'd argue that she's not even making informed decisions. She doesn't understand that what she's doing is wrong, not because she's inherently bad, but because she's been so thoroughly brainwashed by her father. He's made her even crazier than him, and yet, she still want his approval. She's desperate for it, because it's the only thing that's ever made her feel of value. Her mother only ever gave her negative reinforcement for her actions, but never taught her differently. Azula had no say in how she was taught by her father. She wanted to feel like she was doing good, and one parent made her feel that way. Unfortunately, it was Ozai, leading to a vicious cycle of her seeking his approval, completely buying into his worldview, to the point that she legitimately believes love is nothing more than a sign of weakness. And yet, her own hallucination of her mother says she loves her. That's her own psyche trying to comfort her with the idea of love, which she's clearly never felt. She's a very sad character. I don't feel empathy for her, as I can't relate to her experience, but I absolutely feel sympathy for her, because she's clearly suffering greatly. She's a 14 year old child who's been brainwashed so much that she can't function in normal human interaction, and casually suggests genocide as a strategy in war.

I'm surprised you're blaming Azula for the way she turned out. Even though she was a prodigy it's still a burden that brought way more pressure to her than Zuko. She's a 14 y/o girl who was raised to be nothing else but an asset, never treated by anyone like a human being. There was never any hope for her to begin with, which is kinda sad. It's the perfect example of the biproduct of a traumatic childhood and a bit of sociopathy. Seeing the different ways it shaped both Zuko and Azula gives you insight to their different situations, both pretty horrid. Therefore it doesn't feel entirely just to judge Azula but excuse Zuko... since they both had bad upbringings. She might've not been as insane if Ursa hadn't decided to "pick a child" like Ozai did. Both parents were at fault for their kids.

^^, But I do think Ursa put in some effort with Azula, she did try to talk to her and she did spend time with both Zuko and Azula like when she read them Iroh's letter and gave them their gifts, it's not like she neglected Azula completely like Ozai did with both their children.

imaad uddin I see what you mean but whenever there was a conflict she sided with Zuko and she even called her "wrong". What we see of the flashbacks it seems like Ursa didn't try to understand her. I get it can be a handful to deal with for a mother but as I said...you can't blame a child for doing basically what she was brought up to do. Which I feel like these guys are doing.

You might consider the fact that Azula doesn't sound 14 as another factor for why they didn't sympathize with her. Maybe if they had a voice actor that was younger they could see this more clearly and side with her more. Another point id like to make is that there are people in this world that are sociopathic even though they are raised properly. If she had a sense of morality like zuko she would have maybe sided with Aang in the long run

I think the big difference is that Ursa would have gladly helped Azula the way she helped Zuko, if Azula had ever asked her to. Ozai wouldn't have helped Zuko, because he didn't care about him. But because Ozai took Azula under his wing, and was so domineering and manipulative in his education of her, Azula could never bring herself to actually open up to her mom. As a result, she had to come up with this coping mechanism of "Oh, well clearly my mom hated me and thought I was a monster", whereas deep down she's always known that's not the truth, which is why those fears manifested in the mirror.

The Azula and Zuko fight is quite possibly my favorite thing in both series, I just love how they treat the situation the way they should... This is a brother and sister *literally* trying to kill each other. I don't feel like they would be talking much or even at all, and so they just let the sounds of fire going back in forth take the lead with the music building the way it does. It's just amazing.

My notes so far: - Azula in the throne room with blue fire as she's losing her mind - it looks pale and ill, and the shadows shut down on her like a tomb. I wonder if that's foreshadowing one of two outcomes for her demise: to ultimately lose her life by season's end, or just go completely insane? - The moment Sokka shielded Toph from debris as their airship was flying apart made me realize (and they've gone out of their way to not kill anyone off so far, yet still discuss the gravity of a life and losing it) that every single one of these side characters is *expendable.* None of them HAVE to survive this finale. I am terrified. - The Play, so far, is staying accurate, oh god no - The sound-mixing for this show has always been great, but this is up there with "The Southern Raiders" and the horrific sound effects for Katara blood-bending the wrong man (uuggghh!). Particularly, where Ozai conjures the fire to start burning the Earth Kingdom has this shrieking sound that is both lovely AND terrifying. - Remember that episode with the pirates, and Iroh laughing at the end, saying that the Lotus tile he lost had been there the whole time? It may be a little bit of a stretch, but I wonder if that was implying/foreshadowing that the White Lotus has been indirectly pushing events into motion the whole time, too? - Azula and her Mother. Really think about this - she had to actively imagine that her mother was telling her that she loved her. I've always imagined that Zuko and Azula were products of two very different, but still purposeful methods of upbringing: Zuko, constantly being shut down and denied everything, but Azula getting everything she wants and spending a lifetime of no one ever telling her "NO". It makes "The Beach" episode especially tragic, as it's a look into the fact that Azula knows nothing but war, when she should be making real friends and enjoying childhood. She CAN'T form meaningful relationships with people; she could never have a normal life. And now, having realized that her father never actually loved her, but was using her and turned her into a monster from the start - there's no saving her...and now there's really only one way that this can end. This Agni Kai between them has such sad music behind it, and it IS sad, and makes you wonder what the hell happened to this family that a brother and sister have to fight this way. They shouldn't be trying to kill each other...none of this is their fault. - I've waited years to finish this series and see this finale. I have tissues and plenty of ice cream ready, but I don't think it's gonna help. :(

With Azula, you really have to think about it like she is the child of a cult leader. After her mother left and Zuko left with their uncle, the only person she had was her father who taught her the fire nation are the best, everyone else is below them and that they should all be under them. From a child until this moment, she was essentially brainwashed to be the perfect evil being. She has no sympathy because her father taught her none. She hurts and makes people cower to her because that's what her father did. I often wonder if Zuko and Azula had been switched, and Azula was the one whom their mother cared more for and Zuko the one with their fathers pride if they would end up the same. The fact that they turned out so differently boils down to one person. Iroh. He was by Zuko teaching him subtly what is right and wrong, how to be a good person, etc. It took a while because all he's ever known was what the fire nation taught him, which was all fire nation propaganda. Iroh changed him for the better and set him on the right path. Azula DIDN'T have that person. I love Azula as an evil villain, in case you can't tell.

I definitely would not say it's entirely Azula's fault for the way she turned out. Being raised in such an abusive family with a power-hungry, selfish, literally physically abusive father can do stuff to you. For her, she was definitely living in a kill-or-be-killed mentality and using fear like she saw Ozai use was the only way she knew control. I feel sympathy for her because she didn't get a choice in how she grew up, she was simply thrown into a terrible family dynamic that favoured power over love. Edit: Also the reason why Zuko turned out differently is because he had his mother to help him question the actions of the rest of the Fire Nation family and he was shown love by his mother. Azula by that time was already too far gone because she was a prodigy and obviously a child is going to lean toward the parent that favours the talent she has more.

Zuko/Katara vs Azula is my favorite fight from the whole show. It's probably my favorite fight from any cartoon series. Everything about the fight is just phenomenal, from the animation to the music, it's just incredible. I loved the music especially it fit the moment perfectly, usually for a final fight you would expect some epic type of music but no, the music here was sad and it was just amazing. It was perfect to show Azula's mental breakdown and her downfall. I loved the part when it showed an aerial view of the Fire Nation Capital and all you could see is blue flames and red flames, just beautiful. I loved Azula as a villain so much, but over here you do start feeling bad for her and look at her like a regular person instead of someone who is evil, she is just a 14 year old girl after all, I loved the mirror scene of when she sees her mothers reflection, Azula is such an amazing villain who is so perfect and flawless, we tend to forget she's a human being too and just a girl who has feelings just like everyone else, and I think this episode displayed that perfectly. So we all obviously know of the iconic scene of Zuko taking the lightning bolt for Katara and almost dies in the process. The thing is I see people people try to invalidate this moment by saying Zuko would've done the exact same thing if it were Sokka, Aang or Toph etc. I 100% agree with those people, Zuko is honorable and a very loyal person, he wouldn't let any of his friends die, heck he couldn't even watch his own enemy General Zhao die in Book 1. But it wasn't Zuko's action of taking the bolt that made this moment romantic. It was the way it was portrayed. B/c while I'm certain that Zuko would've taken the bolt for anyone, I highly disagree that he would have reacted or it would have been portrayed the same way because it screamed romantic love. Let's start with the absolute terror in Zuko's eyes. Then there's the fact that the whole scene was in slow motion, like it was a big deal. Slow motion is usually used in scenes of love, tragedy or suspense. This scene definitely wasn't suspenseful, it was a little tragic yes, but it honestly oozed love. It was so apparent that it was about Zuko's desperation and determination to save Katara's life and take the fall rather than about him actually getting injured or possibly dying. This is also reflected in the music again, it wasn't suspenseful but was really sad. And then finally, what really hit the nail on the head is Zuko's cry. When Zuko's eyes followed the lightning bolt to Katara he starts running like a madman really, no hesitation, and as he leaps to take the pain that was intended for her, he literally screams "Noooooo!" I tear up and get goosebumps every time I see it. That cry makes all the difference b/c that cry wasn't the act of an honorable man protecting a friend, that cry wasn't to benefit anyone or change Azula's mind. That cry was for him. That was about Zuko, it was his inner turmoil. That cry took that scene and changed it from Zuko being an honorable man who would do the same for anyone to Zuko risking his life and the future of his nation b/c the thought of anything happening to Katara was so much worse. Zuko was willing to sacrifice his birthright to the throne, his chance to right the Fire Nation's wrongs and his life for Katara, because he felt that was more important. So I'm not saying that Zuko was necessarily in love with Katara in this moment b/c I don't want this comment to be tarnished by shipper goggles, but one thing I will always be 100% certain of is that Zuko's feelings for Katara were on a much higher, deeper and more intense level than anyone else in the Gaang and that it was reflected in this scene.

Ok, first off, the servant who was holding the bowl of cherries was also voiced by Grey (Azula's VA). I love how the blue flames make the throne room look so cold and tomb like. Sickly. The scene with the mirror has to be in the top three of my favorite moments of this show. Like, do you hear that music, do you see the way all her expressions are animated? This scene was really the payoff for Azula's insanity for me! And the strings build on that moment. And Grey's performance.... I can't with this scene because it's just so gorgeous in it's unease! And then you have the fight between Zuko and Azula which is an animation and musical marvel and truly shows off how this show has grown in its maturity. The colors are so vibrant, the blue clashing with the orange. The shadows! As much as the Aang and Sokka stuff is great, truly, this episode (the show in general) really just shines in those moments.

I feel like not enough people give credit to the editing of the two fights together. An epic destiny fight with loud, booming music contrasted with a personal rivalry fighting with muted, passionate music. To speak on a different topic, I sympathize with Azula because I see the Firelord family as a display of how evil grows. Sozin thought he had something to give in a misguided way, Azulon was raised believing he needed to maintain power and so he started the war, Ozai became obsessed with power and took it for himself, and the cycle ended with Azula being crazy because she was never genuinely loved once in her life. Her father imprinted on her power and fear mattered, so that became her reason to live and is now shattered because no one fears her anymore.

Azula is one of my favorite characters in Avatar, one of the best villains and one of the most tragic, literally raised with no positive role model and just raised to be a weapon. She really couldn't have turned out any differently as Ozai raised her to be what she was. If Ozai took as much interest in Zuko it'd have been the same way. If Iroh took Azula under his wing maybe it would've been the opposite. Reminds me of Darth Malak's line to Revan about if their positions were reversed if he could've been the hero.

Friday cannot come fast enough. And Calvin?...You are truly a great man to never spoil anything for these guys or even unintentionally crack a smile whenever they're right about something. That takes skill. Anyways, I wonder when they'll go back to Pokemon Generations. They just got to the really really good parts!

I think another element of this, and a point about Azula, is that Zuko had Iroh. He lost his son and saw something in Zuko and stood by him throughout all his confusion anger and hurt. Azusa didn't have that, she was left in the fire nation and had no one but her father. Her friends had already moved on with their lives and she was just under her father's influence and manipulation the entire time. We see the firelord manipulating her until the end and we see her trying to impress him at the war meeting. It was the only access to affection she had. I can't help but wonder what life for the two siblings would have been like if Iroh had tried to influence them both, before Zukos banishment and after. Did he ever take the time to try with Azula and then realise she was past saving? It doesn't sound like something Iroh would do! 🤔 guess we'll never know! Huh 😅

One of the greatest series finale period for me, everything throughout the show all leads up to this epic 4 part finale. The music, the animation, the choreography all are godlike. God i love this freaking show

I always have to watch these reactions twice. The first time because I'm so focused on what's happening in the actual episode, and then the second time because I forgot to actually watch them reacting to it the first time around lol

I see this insane display of power and skill from everyone, especially the firebenders, and I can't help but feel incredibly underwhelmed by every pathetic skirmish in The Legend of Korra.

I think people only focus on Azula's "craziness" on how and why she's so distructive, but they forget that she was raised to love her nation. Azula is no different than US army soldiers who justify their killings as something that's "for the good of the country". It's war. Katara and Sokka have both expressed desire to handle the Fire Nation in a destructive way in the earlier seasons too.

Except Azula is pretty unhinged, without any discipline. She has no love for her country or her people as can clearly been seen by her banishing and threatening her crew. Shed be more understandable if she had a passion other than herself. Zuko actually loves his country while Azula desires power. Thats just what she was born to think. Its a weak comparison that youre drawing between her and professional US soldiers

That makes absolutely no sense and seeing 19 likes reminded me how crazy the Azula fanbase was or probably still is

I'm going to say this once everyone. I know you like LOK but however, majority of people prefer ATLA more for a reason. I know your requesting this but there is no guarentee that they will like it considering that it is different. So if they don't like it or if they feel weird about it in a way, DO NOT FORCE THEM TO WATCH IT NOR DO NOT HATE ON THEIR OWN OPINION!! It's their reaction and opinion so do not ruin it for them otherwise it's no longer a reaction. it'll just be us forcing them to watch something they want to

Now I don't know if this has been revealed already but I really want to know if you guys are watching the legend of Korra after this is over. Because it afterall is the next part of the story and it takes place after the events of Avatar the last Airbender.

1) They plan on watching it. 2) We don't know when they will start. For all I know, they could have already seen the first 2 episodes. 3) It will be once a week. No twice a week for this one. They want to use the Friday slot for another show.

I think it's pretty clear that mental illness runs in Zuko and Azula's family. Azula clearly has it, Ozai clearly has it and Azulon and Sozin were probably affected by it too. You also have to consider that because Azula was favored by Ozai she was raised by an emotionally abusive, evil person so she was taught to be cold and manipulative. Zuko was mostly raised by their mother so he has more empathy. They are both a product of the parents who raised them. Plus when Zuko was banished he had Iroh. Azula probably doesn't even know what things like love and friendship feel like considering she was convinced her mother hated her, her father used her and her friends only stuck around because they were afraid of her.
