That is a thing in the cartoon. An avatar’s past lives can temporarily if the situation calls for it take over the current avatar’s body. And when that happens the current avatar takes on the appearance of the one possessing them. Aang did this with Avatar Roku with one episode in the cartoon.

@@danielolamide114thats just a netflix show rule. In the books and cartoon, past avatars aren’t bound by such a silly rule.

@zimvader25 the cartoon did have rules around it, just less defined. Roku can take control of Aang because it's the Solstice. The cartoon never explains how Kyoshi managed it. The Netflix show rightfully makes a clear rule around it so we don't sit here wondering why Aang even needs to learn other bending levels when a previous avatar can take him over and fight. Like, if Kyoshi can just take Aang over whenever, just drop him in the Fire Nation capital so she can kill Ozai right now.

The way they filmed Kyoshi talking to Aang was neat. The camera angles so that it looked like the actress towered above him is accurate to the lore. Kyoshi was not only the oldest Avatar at 230 years old but stood at 7 Feet tall. She was in fact one of the most powerful ones in Avatar history.

don't know why you're surprised, Roku did the exact same thing to Aang in the cartoon, took over his body and everyone in the room saw Roku .

Suki's mom is played by Tamlyn Tomita, who played Kumiko in The Karate Kid. Ha! Also, the way Suki and Sokka's relationship develops in this episode is one of the changes I think actually makes for a stronger narrative than the original.

4:38 Keep in mind,she was trying to force her bending by concentrating really hard on it at first. Aang taught her last episode that as a bender she needed to be more in tune with the flow of chi/energy in her body. She's a better bender now not simply because she's around him, but because he taught her to feel it and let it come naturally rather than to force it.

Expecting something would happen in order, that came directly from the cartoon will ruin the experience honestly. The best way to enjoy this version is to simply be aware of what happened in the cartoon and trust the process this Live Action adaptation will take you. Simply enjoy the awesomeness that is not the M.Night version 😂🥰

Exactly. The same people that are dropping so much hate on the series are the same ones that watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy and had complaints like "Where's Tom Bombadil??" "Frodo shouldn't be so young!" "Aragorn got Narsil so much earlier!" and on and on. This is separate from the cartoon, not a 1:1 adaption. Plenty of animated things don't work in live action or for the tone they are going for.

@@wolffontech luckily for me, I learned this lesson back in the early 90s when Jurassic Park came out. I read the book immediately after (in under 24 hours) and was surprised how different it was, but that helped me understand how and why things change with adaptation.

1000% I dont get all the comparing, if you want the 1:1 copy paste story of the original, GO WATCH THE ORIGINAL! They kept the DNA and essence of the original to tell a new version of the original story and I AM HERE FOR EVERY BIT OF IT! It gives me chills every new episode and at the same time it definitely honors the original characters.

@@urbnctrl it's sort of a 'kill your darlings' situation. If tasked with reducing 20+ episodes down to 8, many people would have trouble picking more than a few episodes to cut, and different people would cut different episodes. This is why adaptation is always tricky. You'll never please everyone.

Listen, I feel like a lot of avatar fans are missing out on this show because they are hanging on the original really hardcore. I get it. I love it too but my advice is to delete the animation from your brain long enough to watch this. It follows the line but changes enough to be fresh. There is actually some great elements and choices in here despite the changes. See what they are doing with character development and some motivations. Almost every episode actually has an impactful emotional character moment at least once that if dissected is super interesting and though provoking. Let the original be it's own thing. Trying to watch it 1 to 1 is what is making people dislike it so much and to that I say, what is the point of that over just going back and watching the original?

You guys will likely enjoy this a lot more if you stop looking for a 1:1 comparison with the animated show. The acting does get better with time, and there's some really powerful character moments. This is not to say it doesn't have it's flaws, it certainly does. But speaking from experience, just delete the OG show from your brain and try to take it what is being written here, because it is WAY different in places, but there's a lot of good stuff to be had.

Remember in the first episode, Aang passed on a tip from his own trainers, which helped Katara complete the move she was learning. She's not saying she can't bend when he's not nearby. She's saying he has helped her learn her bending better.

I know there isn't as much comedy, but I liked to little more serious tone. I liked the animated series more, but I did really like what they did in this one as well. I liked the changes as the made sense to me, especially for new audiences. Overall great series.

You do recall that Aang became Roku in the Fire Temple back in season 1 (Book 1) of the animated series.... It's explained that it only works in the temples dedicated to that Avatar....

I think the show only feels rushed because we already know the plot, so we can see that plot is past 3 episodes in one go. I watched with my dad who didn’t know the cartoon and he didn’t feel that issue. Also, I think we need to account for the fact that the Netflix show might add new scenes and context to certain plots that didn’t exist in 24 min animated show blocks, so with different structuring, it means some scenes might be cut so the show has room to fill in other scenes, for example, adding that first bit with all the flashbacks to set up the fire nation starting the war and what happened to the air nomads. They need that wiggle room to move things around.

Plus Netflix show has a real life problem in that if it wants to tell the whole story it has to literally hurry as the kids aren’t going to put off puberty for a few seasons. This is the time humans grow up quickly. If the show is renewed they’ll probably have to do a time jump

Past Avatar took over Aang body too was in the anime ... Roku did it when Aang was on Roku temple too. I can also why they did the substitute Kyoshi instead of spending money for a CGI of a giant water serpent. I'm sure some other changes they will do due to budget constraint.

8 hours are not equal to 8 hours. Having a 20 minute Episode about x, and another about y is not a problem, but having 1/3 of an episode about x, than move on to something completely different to do y doesn't work.

In the cartoon, Kyoshi takes over aang's body when she admits she killed a man. Roku takes him over when he's in rokus shrine and the sages betrayed the avatar. They kept the same rule - aang has to be near their shrine.

Sokka's the only real weak link for me performance wise (specifically in line delivery, as his physicality and even his chemistry with the rest of the cast is quite good), though having finished the season i can say even he gets better as the series goes on. Katara has a couple of stilted deliveries that could probably have used another take or two to get there, but she always feels emotionally engaged. Zuko and Iroh are MVPs throughout (actually, I'd say every firebender we meet brings it with both barrels as Zhao, Azula, and especially Ozai are fantastic as well!). And Aang is so damn sweet and earnest, like a young Ke Huy Quan! Special shout out this episode in particular for so thoroughly nailing the depictions of Suki and Kyoshi! More than ever i wanted Suki to leave with them, just so we could get more with her! But i can be patient... 😁

Animation is going to be similar in some ways to stage plays and pro wrestling. It requires extra emoting… physically, with the other two, verbally with the animation. It’s simply not necessary to emote too strongly in a live action show. So of course the spoken lines seem subdued.

I've watched the animated series multiple times and I love the changes! I was hoping it was not going to be the same as the animated series because well I know what happens and its predictable and lazy if done the same. I have a few friends watching it that have never seen avatar and are loving this one. Only thing that bothered me if anything was the spirit world as it looked like a lazy set design this episode.

There were 20 episodes in the animated version of Book One, and there are only eight in the live action. The plot is going to move faster. :)

One thing is for sure is that this is kinda of a darker take then the cartoon and I mean I understand that you expect things from the cartoon to be in this but like the live action version of One Piece they can't do everything that was in book one so they put together what they could or wanted in the live action version. So expect things to be different but still paying homage to the cartoon. But still an awesome episode and I enjoyed your reaction 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

If they followed exactly theseries is just no spark the point of the adaptation is not just to copy the exact story but still support u guyz rection tillll the end reality is if they followed the series the effort of props cgi and alot of stuff in just years took alot of effort an expenses it will took ages the animated series has a lot of places they visited 😂😂😂😂 just saying

it's better then the movie, but not better then we expected and it doesn't get better. and the guild trip for Aang it starts to get annoying at one point. Most people say that Katara is the weak link when it comes to acting.
