I think the album sounds pretty wild, definitely an album where they just did whatever they wanted to do, I dig is on the first listen, I didnt like the stage until years later then realized what a masterpiece that album is.

just got off from listening to the new album Life is but a Dream and i have to say that was an incredible listening experience. first off props for them having the balls to go into a more avant-garde territory thats almost at times completely separated from any of their previous work and really own it too but also the way they experiment and deliver on this album makes it much more of an experience and i absolutely loved it. especially on those last few tracks i mean they really went all out on the experimentation and did an incredible job imo. not only that but the mix was also really well crafted, some bands will have a mix that sounds heavy but ultimately gets somewhat of a muddy mix but this new album sounded really clear and crisp! 10/10 for me

Weirdly enough, I like HTTK… Songs like Planets, Requiem, Heretic, and Coming Home are really good to me.

Great breakdown! I felt like each song on Hail to the King was written as a tribute to influential bands like: Metallica, Megadeth, Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, etc. Each song feels like someone else's song.

When you're a superfan (like myself) it can be easy to get defensive when someone isn't praising your favorite band to the nine hills but this struck me as the most balanced appraisal of their work I've ever seen. Credit where it was due, criticism where it was earned, and personal bias applied tastefully. Great work, can't complain.

I guess during the timespan they didn't release an album since The Stage, i was picking up many kinds of songs and lately I've been in love with slow and classic 70-90s song like Frank Sinatra or Mariya Takeuchi. That's why for me [D]eath is my absolute favorite from this album. and I keep replaying all the songs in the album with no exception, all day. I'm legit in love with this album ❤

Honestly life is but a dream Is kind of my Dream album I wanted from a7x. I kinda had a glimpse an idea that they would be heading towards such musical choices. It was all I wanted from them, I know it's messy and nonsensical at places but it has become my no. 1 a7x album. ❤

I'm so glad I found another person who also loves the self titled over City of evil. Also, one thing you forgot to mention was the daft punk influence on LIBAD, especially on Cosmic and Easier with those vocoders

Being a massive industrial and Faith No More fan I was instantly hooked with Nobody and We Love You so this album was a blast, honestly my favorite they have ever put out besides Self Titled

This album is really something else. It feels like it came straight down from heaven, so many haunting melodies and crazy stuff. I always loved A7X, the Self Titled, Nightmare and I remember when The Stage came out it became one of my favorite albums ever, Life Is But a Dream is really close to it, but I need to listen to it more. Cosmic is easily one of their best songs ever. I'm absolutely stunned lol.

Finally, an honest review - the amount of copium filled reactions I’ve seen today regarding this album had me questioning my reality. The A7X fanbase (including me) have been starved of great music for so long we’ve resorted to gaslighting ourselves into believing every new album or release is somehow revolutionary or way ahead of it’s time - even if we hate the way it sounds (essentially if you don’t like it, you don’t get it). Artistic appreciation is great, but at a certain point the experimentation must be tempered with some constructive criticism loll, especially when we are being given Avenged Daftfold and a 4 min piano outro on the same eleven-song album we’ve waited 7 long years for. Let’s be brutally honest, M Shadows can’t sing the way he used to, which while unfortunate is not his fault and can be adjusted around (like they’ve been doing), but the real issue lies deeper, with the Rev truly appearing to be the creative bedrock the band now lacks. I know some people will genuinely enjoy the album and there are a few songs that’ll probably grow on me over time. But, if you showed me this album back in 2010 and said this is what Avenged would eventually become, I’d call you a liar. But I trust that A7X will continue to peek my interest and who knows, maybe I’ll fall in love with there follow up Folktronica inspired album that’ll release in 2030.

I actually DID NOT like Life is But a Dream at first, I thought it was a weird sounding album but the more I listen to it the more I have started to like it. Life is But a Dream is probably close to being my favourite Avenged Sevenfold album, and one of my personal top 3 of all time. I love this album so much, I have replayed it so many times and each time love it more then I did the last time. It is a no skip album for me, even though Im not a fan of slow songs the self titled track on this album is nice to listen to, since it’s such a nice wind down song to finish off this amazing album.

Yours is quite similar to mine. I'm just happy to see a band be ACTUALLY CREATIVE and not just do another big hit for $$. Also shocked I'm seemingly one of few who really, really love the wicked end from city of evil.

I think that, just like the stage, LIBAD needs some time to grow on the fan community, especially considering how crazy it is. I had the privilege on having a background to make me love most experimentation in there. For an album so fragmented, it ended up surprisingly cohesive for me

LIBAD is my favorite albume EVER! I love the risks they took and the stories that each of the songs tell. Cosmic being about letting go of a loved one. Beautiful Morning being about struggling to be happy. Each of the songs are up for interpretation, which is really cool.

Love Nightmare personally. I can see how it’s maybe not as unique as the self titled or some others, but it has a great sound with a lot of diversity. Beautiful ballads. Super fun title track. Balls to the wall almost Pantera ish track with God Hates Us. And probably one of their more epic masterpieces with Save Me.

Found out about Avenged Sevenfold from their track Shepherd Of Fire in Call Of Duty Black Ops 2, I can agree with this list though I'd move Hail To The King to A tier.

Shepherd Of Fire reminds me of Orgins from BO2. That’s probably why I enjoy it. That’s about all the enjoyment I get from this band

Nightmare and City of Evil are easily my favorites. And while I do agree to some extent about your complaints about both, especially with the second half of Nightmare being a bit on the slow side, besides God Hates Us which might be my favorite Avenged song, I still think the highlights on either really push them above a lot of the other records in their discography.

Just listened to a few songs off of Life Is But A Dream, and I have to say, this release is surprising me. Nice diversity on it! I agree with where it is placed on this tier list.

The only one I’d disagree is nightmare. To me that thing is so packed with emotions and I tend to like their slower songs and my personal favorite right up there with the stage. Cool video 🤘

I started listening when I was young (Dad's music) and its always stuck with me. But as I got older, I got soo much more in the band. I grew up on A7X and will always love it

I’ve never been a fan of Avenged Sevenfold, but wanted to check out Life is But a Dream out of morbid curiosity. I don’t think it’s a great album or anything, but I commend them for branching out and trying something out of their wheelhouse this late into their career. It’s definitely an ambitious album comparatively. I will say Life is But a Dream is so over the top that’s it’s almost impossible not to enjoy. It has more personality than any modern metal album that I’ve heard in awhile. I hope a7x could find their own identity as a prog band in the future rather than sounding like a mish mash of various progressive influences mixed with their classic sound.

"Scream" is probably my favorite song on the s/t, and "A Little Piece of Heaven" gave me really strong Mr Bungle vibes. Also found it amusing how that one was soon followed by "Dear God" haha

(tldr summary at the bottom) This might be a bit of a rarer take, but I actually think that Life is but a Dream is a top two album while loving City of Evil, and finding most tracks on The Stage a bit mid. The Stage has a bit of a meh progressive metal sound, whereas LibaD is far more avant garde and artsy. Even though LibaD doesn't have the frequency of dramatic power chord riffs centered around the sharp leading tone in the harmonic minor scale and explosive virtuous lead parts (aside from maybe Nobody), it kind of compliments the vocal dullness of CoE with a bit more of a focus on vocal writing and harmonic structure. They left that melodramatic harmonic minor centered feel for a more well-rounded modernist jazzy and late era Beatles-like sound with many classical influences. Tldr: I think that both of the albums compliment eachother on each side of the spectrum and they're both within my top two favorite albums.

City of evil - S tier, and a level above the rest

I finally listened to Lie is But a Dream in it's entirety today, and I can confidently say it's my favorite album of the whole discography. I love the prog/avant garde stuff and Beautiful Morning is so heavy. The whole album gives me a Mr Bungle vibe, I love it.

So what's crazy is A7X was a gateway band for me in a lot of ways but at the same time, the hits are beloved to me but I honestly could not care to listen too or remember like 60% of their discography and as I've gotten older, I've learned to really appreciate The Stage more and while I haven't listened to the whole new album yet, I listened to Nobody and while everyone was hating on it, I strangely thought to myself....."Ya know what?.....i don't hate it! I kinda like the rough, semi underground feel!" Which is wild because I really enjoy over produced metal and core music 😂😂😂 I like 3 songs off City of Evil. I frankly can't stand the first 2 albums (yes that includes waking the fallen) and self titled was better but Nightmare for me was their best written album before they went really proggy with The Stage.

No offence to anybody who loves them but I just don't really care for this band outside of a couple of songs. The people who prefer The Stage and Life Is but a Dream to Hail to the King are probably the same people that would prefer Stevie Ray Vaughan and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (or BB King and Buddy Guy) to Howlin' Wolf and Jimmy Reed. This is not a dig on anyone, by the way. Just a suggestion on how some people's musical direction might sway a bit differently from others. I'm admittedly in the latter camp, though.
