The Battle of Teutoburg Forest was a devastating blow to the pride of the Roman Army. The Empire was not one to let such humiliations go unpunished and soon launched a series of campaigns to Avenge Varus. The first 100 people to go to www.blinkist.com/invicta are going to get unlimited access for 1 week to try it out. You’ll also get 25% off if you want the full membership.
We continue our coverage of the Germanic Wars and the fallout of the Varian disaster at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest. The episode begins as news of the defeat reaches the Rhine frontier of Germania and is sent back to Rome. The people fly into a panic and even Emperor Augustus is said to have despaired at the news saying "Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!" However mourning soon turned to action as the Roman Empire began to plan a counterattack. Tiberius was chosen as commander of the operation, leading 8 Legions of the Roman Army to the frontier. There he carried out a brutal series of campaigns to stabilize the border region and begin to exact revenge with retaliatory raids. However Tiberius did not strike far into the interior of Germania and was recalled in 2 short years back to Rome. Emperor Augustus was in poor health and would soon die, passing on the reigns of the Roman Empire to his adopted son. In the aftermath, Germanicus would be put in charge of Avenging Varus. His efforts would finally see justice served against Arminius and the Germanic Tribes in the Aftermath Teutoburg Forest that had rocked the Roman world.

Germanicus said he would rather fall on his sword then betray tiberius Also the corrupt leaders were mainly centurions who after having a trail would be beaten to death by the men they abused. The way the centurions abused their men was by demanding bribes to get out of duties which was heavily frowned on in the legions. Also a good series to read is Soldier of Rome series by James Mace.

Sometimes Caesar got lucky. Scipio was a genius that played with the minds of allies and enemies. Marius an hardcore soldier that knew exactly what his men could do. But Tiberius campaings had the inevitability of continental drift. For the enemies, he was perhaps the scariest of them all. He gave them time to comtemplate the futility of fighting back.

@Corristo89
@Corristo89 3 жыл бұрын
The most terrifying thing about fighting the Romans was that they absolutely would not stop until they had utterly crushed their enemy, even after suffering massive losses which would force other empires to at least try to negotiate a truce. Hannibal utterly crushed the Romans three times and he still couldn't beat them. What were a bunch of barely organized barbarians expecting? That Rome was going to take this massive defeat lying down and just file it under "shit happens"? Arminius knew the Romans and understood their mentality. The fact that the Germanic tribes were so unprepared for Rome's campaign of vengance is difficult to understand. Although not too difficult if you know that he could only get the vast number of often feuding tribes to fight together because it was against a common enemy.

After the Marian reforms each governor basically had the power to become Emperor if he kept his legions happy. Kinda what led the crisis of the 3rd century eventually. This problem was never fixed. After Diocletian's reforms, each Magister Militum of a field army had the same power. Then im Heraclius' themata system, each Strategos had complete military and administrative control of his theme which emboldened him. And, since the thematic troops were all hardened veterans who would be the first to face any invasion, the old guard units of Constantinople were little match for them. To counter this, Constantine V created a central Tagmata field army directly in control of the Emperor which helped but if that army got destroyed, it was chaos abound like what happened after Manzikert in 1071.

You have to remember that antiquity historians were not always truthful, and particulary Tacitus and Suetonius, alas the two main sources on the early Empire. Tacitus was a senator, who was noastlagic of the old days, so he hated Tiberius for being the Princeps and diminishing the power of the Senate (notably, during his exiles in Capri, away from Rome). And Suetonius was just a gossiper who wanted to tell all the most juicy details, reading Suetonius is like reading a tabloid XD Today, although historians are still debating of the pleasuures of Capri, the consensus seems to be that Tiberius, who was a shy modest man for most of his life, probably did not became a monster in that island, he just lived a more luxurious and pleasant life than before, and probably still had contacts with Rome. We think that because no other sources than Tacitus and Suetonius evoke the monstrosity of Tiberius, and we have a lot of sources, Strabo, Flavius Josephe, Senequius, Pline the young, etc... And also, just the behaviour of Tiberius, really a man who served well and was trusted of Augustus, then did a first half of reign (occulted by Tacitus of course) pretty good and in the steps of Augustus, that became a total mad monster just because he took some vacancies away from Rome? ^^'

I find the pace that Rome could go through Legionnaires at some point absolutely stunning. Especially in the earlier years when they were basically recruiting from around Rome itself. It was definitely one of their biggest assets, either the willingness of people to fight or the way they could force them to if needed. That with the myths and cultural beliefs that every Roman grew up totally believing and taking to heart. They structured their entire culture around bravery, sacrifice for the state and that fighting for Rome meant to win in the end. OK the rich and powerful who used the people probably didn't fully believe it but they were careful to ensure that the majority of the people did.

May you go deeper in depth on the courier system of Rome? How did they travel to far places like another continent? Do they take a month long voyage for them to say something like send troops? Did they try to give as much information each time being sent. It would seem rather practical to put as much information down to send. So they would travel far distances to say one focal point just to return and tell the person that sent them he said no?

He agreed to raise their pay (all or some of it) and they declared him imperator. This is a bit of a disturbing trend and a sign of things to come much later. It would be easier if there was some sort of imperial bloodline that people would accept and the legions knew it. Then at least instead of any successful general making a march on the imperial core with the backing of his troops, only descendants of Augustus and their in-laws would have such a claim since anyone else would realize they can't rule in a stable way. More important than generals not being tempted is that if emperors all came from the bloodline of one person and they knew that was the source of their legitimacy they can trust their successful generals and not get jealous of their success. Of course in theory the Senate was still in charge, Augustus was just a really rich man they appointed to do stuff for Rome and lead the military so there can't really be any way that arrangement could happen.
@alex_zetsu

@Marcelo Henrique Soares da Silva True, but let's say Emperors had to come from a specific _family_ rather than bloodline. At least then Emperors wouldn't need to get jealous at successful generals.

The map. The Romans did not withdraw from the whole province of Greater Germany in 9 ad . The north, the Batavians, Friesians and the tribes at the mouth of the Weser River remained under control, as did some forts in the area. Withdrawal from Friesland will take place in three decades ....

Tell that to Parthia, cough, cough: battle of Carrhae... cough, cough: Three eagle standards lost!!! Rome never conquered Persia in the end completely, only the Western parts of it in Mesopotamia by Trajan's late life by 117 A.D = it only made Persia far more deadlier centuries later on as Sassanid Persia. Cough, cough: Hannibal = Carthage may have lost the war in the long run with Rome, but the romans never caught him in the end = he took his own life with poison many years later as he continued to fight them outside of his country before they could seize him! = no glory or triumph for their revenge, just fear + paranoia and rage over Carthage's eventful return. Cough, cough: The Picts of ancient Scotland = the Romans tried many times, yet failed to conquer them in the end... as it was one of their own versions of Vietnam, with no major resources to exploit or lands to settle for proper financial use, nor full on open battles to defeat them all. Even Germania here was never fully conquered, nor reconquered = Arminius never got captured nor killed by the romans in their revenge obsession, except his wife and unborn child being taken to Rome... only assassinated by his own allies + people, due to becoming too popular and powerful in the possibility that he might one day become king of all Germania. Sometimes you and other people can F*** with Rome back then and get away with it = only if you're smart enough and prepared enough to do so and over the many years in preparations to survive it all in the retaliations that come afterwards... you just need to cripple them from doing so and then you can do it... or you can wait to do it by the 3rd century crisis A.D onwards in being born = by then the tables were turning against Rome! After all: Rome's been F***ing with many other peoples in building up their empire for centuries even as a republic before-hand, pay back's a B****!!!

Everything I know about battle... I learned from you. What do we fight for? I often asked you that. Some fight for what used to be. And others for what is to come. Or for love. We fight for honour. We fight for glory. We fight for our freedom. Some fight for their children. Still others fight for their gods. The key thing is that we can only win when we’re in full control of our emotions. Or have a crystal clear strategy. You must maintain order within your rankings while destroying that of the enemy’s. Whatever we fight for… we pay the price in blood. We all die… the guilty… and the innocent. And when all is lost… you still need the help of the gods. Your impregnable armour became your largest burden. But the most important thing… is to recognise your enemy’s greatest weakness. And bring all your strength down on this point. Take my armour. Are you sure, Dominus? You are a free man. Get out of here. And your biggest weakness… was your trust in me. I ask myself…. what were *YOU* fighting for? And was it worth it? Pater…. PATER!!! You never understood… that we might want a different life than you. To believe differently, feel differently, and think differently from you.

Ok so I have a request: an alternate history on Philip II of Macedon surviving and Conquering Persia. He was a really good ruler who controlled Greece minus Sparta and he made military reforms and a few others I think and he set up the campaign of the Persian Empire. He gave possibly the best education of that time to Alexander and Philip is very very underrated while Alexander is very overrated just because he was the one who conquered Persia. So what would Philip II and gods conquest look like to Alexander’s and how much longer would it have lasted because Philip would’ve made Alexander a good successor?
