Great review, and great explanation of a torque sensor! I've always ridden e-bikes with Bosch or Shimnao e-assist that are mid-drive and use a torque sensor. I do have a fat tire bike for snow with a Bafang M620 mid-drive motor with a torque sensor and I can see that the value priced bikes are definitely made hugely better now that some are coming out with torque sensors. Even hub motors with torque sensors - that's great.

I'm trying to decide between the Aventon Level 2 and the Adventure 2. Not sure if I really need the fat tires and more off road capable bike that is 24 pounds heavier?

Last thing I want is a torque sensor because of a bad knee. If it wasn't for a cadence sensor I couldn't ride at all.

Since pedal assist is capable of higher cruising speed than throttle, which is legally limited lower in Class 2 and Class 3, I find the torque sensor a detriment to enjoyment of the bike. I want the maximum speed the bike can give me, not be reduced by my aging leg power. Torque sensor robs me of speed on open roadways. Cadence is not unsafe, the rider should have bike in the right mode for the situation, ie. not be in turbo mode while getting a bike through narrow gates or out of a storage area, for example. And I'm not using the bike off-road where someone needs to avoid obstacles like trees and rocks, and a torque sensor may help them control the bike better. Now that we have two types of power control out there, I hope top manufacturers will give us both on all bikes, and allow the rider to choose which is needed in any situation for the type of riding we do.

are you also revieweing the level 2 ?

Someone below claims Aventon has no warranty unless you purchase one. Is that true?

I got an lectric premium on sale for $1500 with the middrive and torque sensor, love that it folds up and has 100 mile range. Outside of the Aventures color screen and turn signals, I feel the Lectric is better overall and has great customer service but get what you like the most. I sold my Aventon Aventure, it was hair lighter but felt cheap and the step through area was too small, it would hit my balls when i would use it that way.

I won’t buy another Aventon bike. I purchased my Aventure (costing $1999) last May 2022. They switched out the Shimano Acera for an Altus which will not stay in adjustment like other rear derailleurs. Even though the website says they substitute equal or better components they refused to resolve the problem. Instead, Aventon’s customer service insinuated I wasn’t shifting gears properly. I’ve been riding and working on bikes my whole life. They also shipped a 657Wh battery (printed on the label attached to the battery) instead of the specified 720Wh battery. Now, after 10 months/560 miles, the bottom bracket has a noticeable clic/pop when heavier pressure is applied to the crank. I’ve learned my lesson. My replacement bike will be either a Ride1Up or Trek. Buyer beware!!!

It's not under 2k. After taxes, yeah, it's under 2k, but are you really going to spend all that money and not at least buy the one year warranty?
