The hardest part isn't even avoiding the attacks in game. It's avoiding the attacks from giving you a seizure.

They probably playtested every attack while having full hp and just thought " yeah it's not THAT bad"

Just so you know, DustTrust is an amalgamation of distrust and dusttale, where distrust is when sans stops you from killing papyrus and papyrus goes sicko mode in the judgement hall. Dusttale is when sans, after seeing you do genocide over and over, decides to kill most of the monster race to gain enough LV to stop you. This fangame in particular, however, seems to add Underswap to make it so you fight sans instead of papyrus, which makes it more of a DustTrustSwap. Thank you, i will now return to living under my nerd rock.

Just remember that every fangame that starts with "Dis-" or "Dust-" is going to be bullet hell.

The biggest difficulty is to not cringe from the unnecessary edginess.

What I find funny is that most fangames and AUs completely misunderstand and misuse sans's actual character, unless its an AU that changes their personality directly like Swap or Fell, etc. (actually, most fan media in general misuse classic sans). He doesnt have DETERMINATION. he doesnt care that much to where he would go that ballistic (heck, in canon he probably couldn't as magic is directly tied to the soul. Given how much he sweat, im sure that the actual sans fight was him going all out). And hes also Nihilistic. He knows you can reset, whilst not remembering. And when you finally do defeat him, hes like "welp...guess thats it, huh". He tried, he failed, and oh well, A for effort. Fangames are just silly to me

See the issue isn't the difficulty, it's the design philosophy where they just kinda throw attacks at you in rapid succession Toby Fox likes to make the player do something specific and different for each attack, meanwhile fangames sort of just expect you to do a couple different things but at increasing speed or simply memorize the attack

Undertale suffered heavily from Flanderization in it's fanbase, which is the reduction of complicated characters and their personalities into their most core traits. (And yes it _was_ named after Ned Flanders, he's a textbook case of this). Sans *especially* got the short end of the metaphorical stick here, since everyone loves portraying him as this badass judgement guy when that isn't anywhere near who he is. But, since it's easier to write for the former than the latter, that's what most fan-related content tend to pivot off of.

What I absolutely love is that almost every fan AU version of Sans isn’t even remotely related to Sans’ cannon character. It also just felt like the cannon Sans was more realistic and easy going than fan interpretations of him.

The thing that has always annoyed me with fangames is a lot of attacks are pretty much unavoidable without prior knowledge. The official sans battle gives the player some time to react to an incoming attack, while a lot of fangames are just "hey here's this massive instant-death laser from the sky with no warning, I'm surprised you didn't see that coming!"

The quality (or lack thereof) of some of these fangames really makes you appreciate how Toby was able to get it so right.

while i have a soft spot for these au's (since i was obsessed with them when i was younger lmao), i think what the vast majority of them lack are a real good understanding of what made sans such an interesting character from the second you meet him, the main driving force of sans' character is made super clear, which is a consistent dichotomy between his "i know more than i'm supposed to, am scary and will kill you" persona, and his "i'm easygoing, love ketchup and fart jokes" thing. a lot of sans au's (and now that i think about it just undertale character swaps in general) lose a lot of the character's nuances, since their goal is to make it clear whose role is being replaced with whose. so sans in underswap is papyrus in undertale, sure, but he doesn't have a fraction of the depth which either of the base characters had. granted, it's probably because the au's were made by younger people who are not nearly the storytellers that toby fox is, but i digress. the crazy overpowered, "omg i'm not done yet take this!!" sans boss fights are an obvious effect of this oversimplification. even if sans isn't necessarily changing roles, people nonetheless boil him down to his fundamentals, which most of the time in these universes can be summarized as, "you killed everyone i love and now i'm morally obligated to stop you with a really hard boss fight". and the best way to convey that sans really wants to stop you without saying it out loud (even though most of the time they do anyways lmao) is by making sans' already infamously hard fight worse. now obviously i'm not trying to say that everyone who just wants to make a cool sans boss fight needs to spend hours making sure that the nuances of his character mesh well with the new role he's fulfilling, because that's dumb. but i think if au content creators maybe took more aspects of the base characters and mixed them up in a more balanced way, it'd be more interesting!

I always find it funny how these kinds of Fangames make Sans an unbeatable god like reality bending being. And then you look at the actual Sans and he’s just a lazy guy who makes annoying jokes and doesn’t do his laundry.

i've been thinking about it for a while, and i just realized a one minute video is equal to 1.8 million words, and potentially more so on with that in knowledge, fighting dusttrust sans feels like numerous things: > modded character with overexaggerated movesets in smash brawl (that masterofhyrule had demonstrated) > script kiddie in roblox script games who spams using neptunian v, star glitcher, chara, etc > cheapie in mugen who just gains an unfair advantage towards you and gives potential seizures just because "they're cool to look at" > average lunatic extra boss in touhou > radiance tier 10 prime soul in ultrakill that needs no explanation > brutal ex mod in pvz that essentially requires luck (and hasn't been playtested that much) > perfecting made of fire in stepmania > an anime protagonist with plot armor like kirito from sword art online so.. if you think about it for a second, dusttrust feels like all of these above, and meets these certifications > overexaggerated fight > most sans like this LOVE to go out of character and spam gaster blasters, slash, etc > they have a stupid amount of advantage towards you, while you only have vanilla stuff like the real knife AND items in general > bullet hell, need i say more? > in fdy's games, they're essentially impossible for a casual player to do, which is why there's a noob mode (which is practically insulting tbh) > some attacks are just filled with rng in general, > you HAVE to practice to get a no-hit in some of their attacks > even after all of this, sans wins in the end because "haha you don't deserve it" it really just shows how the devs didn't think of the consequences when making dusttrust, because *HOLY HELL* they did not need to make it blatantly stupid because now they're gonna think fangame creators have gone too far with how they handled sans

Explaining Dusttrust Calamity is like explaining Bubble Bass's order, it's layers of fannon expertise, i'll grossly summarize it: Dusttrust: Dusttale + Distrust Dusttale: After multiple genocide runs, sans remembers, goes insane and kills as many monster as he can before the player does, in order to lvl himself up and keep the player underleveled. Distrust: Underswap version of Disbelief Disbelief: sans gets killed before papyrus, papyrus becomes the boss of genocide Underswap: characters switch roles, sans is the childish younger(?) brother to papyrus In Dusttrust, underswap papyrus goes on a killing spree, sans tries to stop him and is forced to kill him, figures everything out, goes bonkers and wants to finish what papyrus started. He also gets a sword at some point idk what that's about but i assume it's made out of KARMA or smth.

The hardest part isn't when you dodging all this sh... The hardest part is to imagine how it looks like outside the battle

The problem with fan fights is that they saw that Sans was difficult and required pattern recognition, but they failed to realize it was also fair and somewhat forgiving. Like you make a mistake and you could still clutch up if you know what’s next. However, in fan fights if you mess up once it’s over.

I had considered making a sans fan game where you don't get to use any healing items, and at the end, it's just hours of slow moving bones coming toward you that you can't avoid. 91 of them to be exact, then after that you win if you survive it. I'm glad that I chose to start making fun games instead.

i remember reading somewhere that the reason toby had the concept of determination and choice play such an important role in undertale was because having a lot of determination is like a double edged sword: sure, it can help you do a lot of great things, but also horrible things depending on what you choose to do with it. my point is, when i see all of these genocide sans fight games that trade an actually cohesive story for the funny skeleton man breaking your kneecaps with the power of grayscale pixel gman or some other convenient plot device that isn’t explained at all and will probably continue to be churned out till the end of time itself, i can’t help but feel that that line of thinking may have had some truth to it.

As amazingly designed as some of these fan games are, they're all trying to become the "new hardest fan game" by just throwing in stupid patterns, and just ludicrous bullet hell attacks to seem difficult when it's just the equivalent of "random bullshit go!" It's not the difficulty of a fan game that can make it unique, it's the story it could portray, or how well it actually ties to the AU it's from, or how non "just go install Touhou it's easier" it is.

We need more fangames that give extra focus to the pacifist run and the act button (from what I've seen, it's the most unused button in most fights aside from the mercy one in genocide) And if people still prefer to make genocide run related fangames, at least they could try not making the fangames so stupidly hard that only super pro Touhou fans can finish them without dying fives times per enemy attack

Tip: when creating a game you want it to be unique. Spamming unnecessarily difficult bullet patterns isn't unique. Try adding a new mechanic. Then turn up the difficulty by utilising the new mechanic in interesting ways.

I remember when disbelief papyrus was the hardest fan fight. The concept was cool and the fight was really hard but like. This dusttrust thing is literally just an actual bullet hell. That's some touhou level insanity

Meanwhile in canon Horrortale, Undyne beat Sans after he got exhausted after like, 3-4 or so attacks, and although he is a main character, so is Papyrus, Alphys, Undyne, Toriel, Flowey... drunk rabbit has a name (Dee) and is actually almost a main character, a side character with story and interactions. Same with dogaressa, and they're friends.
