If you’ve been keeping up with my track videos you may know that I’m relatively new to track days. I started in the summer of 2021 and typically register for intermediate class. Although my pace probably has surpassed intermediate at this point, I haven’t been comfortable signing up for advanced class since they require you to be able to pass in corners. The problem for me is that I’m essentially not used to deviating from the racing line at all. The last 2 years I’ve essentially done nothing but hot lapping which leaves a huge gap in my skill as a driver, in what I would consider as entry level race craft. The main skill I need to pick up is driving off line at speed and even just leaving space for others. And considering it’s the off season here in the Northeast, that means it’s time to put in some more work on the sim rig again, specifically on iRacing.

Glad to see you try iRacing! You should post more of your races, we're very interested in following your journey into simracing. A recommendation from me: nothing will teach you racecraft as fast as oval racing. Being 3 wide lap after lap will hone your sense of awareness quickly, and oval racing tends to reinforce wreck avoidance.

Great Job! wheel to wheel is definitely a experience! Little tip, mid corner you'll notice you actually start to turn the wheel more as the car pushes but the car doesn't turn more, in higher races that will roast those front tires for sure! Keep up the good work! possible causes, too fast of a entry, line, trail braking adjustment. Good Luck out there!

thanks! it's funny you mention that bc I've been having a hard time feeling out the limit of grip in iracing. I think it's bc the tire sounds are throwing me off. compared to ac or even real life the tire audio cues don't make any sense to me

Just a tip with slicks like on this car. Generally the peak grip for them is a bit below when they start making noise. Unlike roadtires that are designed to make noise to help communicate that they’re on the limit. Like road tires this causes excess heat and wear that degrades the life and performance quicker than it would otherwise.

As a track dayer my self who also races on Iracing. DO NOT TOUCH THE GRASS! It’s a decent sim but it’s not perfect. And my issue is too many bad drivers can be fast. But have 0 race craft. But unlike you can’t admit to that. That being said some tips to give, is you drive great. But when people make mistakes you follow their lead. You need to capitalize more. Instead of lifting look for the opening or way to not make contact but leave the corner faster than them. So instead of lifting cut your exit short to gain the inside WITH momentum. ESPECIALLY in Miata/GR86. It’s all about momentum. And at 5:16 happens to most of us, you’re racing from your mirror not your friend window. Which is why you blew that corner haha

Totally agree that the sim can help with driving offline and handling passes. I came into real track days with years of sim experience and felt ok with passing, but I’m probably not pushing hard enough in reality because I’m used to the sim physics being unforgiving.

You have no idea how much I enjoy your videos :) Keep up the good work! I even tried iracing because of this video... But that was a BIG disappointment. OK, oldschool graphics and UI, I don't really care. The online racing idea would be great, but I (as a rookie) can only race in mx5 IN THE DARK?? And also, wtf is this handling? Anytime the rear loses grip, it's like i'm on ice, can't do ANYTHING to control the slide. I've been on a couple trackdays (even with miata), and also have 500+hours in Assetto Corsa, but iracing is just unreal :(

Been iracing for a few years now and have been dying to see if anything that ive learned on the sim will translate to a real track day. thanks man means a lot! sim > irl 100% transfers, I actually started training for track days in ac and was by far and away the best novice driver at my first track day lol. as for a starter car it's tough to say without knowing budget. but ppl track Honda fits as the cheapest option I've seen. can't forget about the civic and miata too

When you take that inside line push out as far as you can if they leave you that so much room. It will let you take a more optimized line through the corner, but also if they decide to turn in on you they will have less distance to build up ramming speed, it will be more of bump, if you're all the way to the inside you have not just a poor line, you really are set up to take a bad hit if the other driver turns in on you. This is even more important in real life, better to have a bit of rubbing than to get t-boned. Good stuff, I'd be curious about your steering wheel and pedals.

Just wondering, is your sim setup for clutch/shifter when you practice or do you paddle shift/right foot brake? I’m currently running a NB2 Miata IRL for track days and im worried simulators will detach me from what I actually deal with on the track.
@dadhats
@dadhats 4 ай бұрын
depends on what I'm doing. if I'm practicing for a track I'm planning on going to irl, I play ac with manual and clutch but if I'm just casually playing iracing I go with paddles and left foot brake normally. I wouldn't worry too much about it

12:37 there would have definitely been contact if he tried to pass on the inside there. IMO would have definitely led to one or both of you crashing. (I’ve been guilty of both offenses many times 😟) You made a good move to try to give him some room. I would have likely closed the door thanks to racing almost exclusively AI w/ damage turned off.
