fun fact about mantis shrimp: Turns out they can't see like a billion colors, their little shrimp brains just don't have the ability to blend the wavelengths so they need a different receptor for each color.

19:50 Electrician chiming in: It's not efficient in the slightest! Biochemically produced electricity is good for exactly one thing: A number of short bursts to fend off predators or potentially, maybe disrupting distinctly smaller prey animals' heart beat so they struggle less when being eaten. It being delivered in short bursts is what makes it unsuitable to even charge the accumulator (battery but better) of a small Hot Wheel(tm) track. On a related note: The reason biochemically produced electricity has low amperage is because biomass is genuinely bad at being translated into electromagnetic force unless you ferment it into a methane factory to fuel a gas plant first, hence why biofuels will not be able to help with the climate crisis.

That's not what he said though He said it's efficient for what it's used for, hunting, because the energy used up is easily gained back by consuming the prey Doesn't really matter if humans can use it to power machines or not

The venom thing is something people repeat without thinking, venom can be poisonous and poison can act like venom, they aren’t mutually exclusive but there are some gnarly venoms that can only mess you up if they enter your bloodstream and will get digested normally if they don’t, at least theoretically, if you’ve coughed a little or ate something a little too sharp then you’re in for a bad time
@Annie_Annie__
@Annie_Annie__ 4 ай бұрын
This. The “you have to eat a poison” always bothers me because of the tons of poisons out there that are effective by being touched. Poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and poison dart frogs are all appropriately named and will affect you just by brushing against them.
@darthplagueis13
@darthplagueis13 4 ай бұрын
Regarding the drinking venom question: A lot of venoms are complex proteins that would be broken down by your stomach acid. Poisons, unlike venom, are often less complex molecules that will be absorbed through your stomach walls. Still, if you were to try and swallow venom, there's a chance you might absorb it through mucus membranes in your mouth, long before it could even get to the stomach.
@catharticreverie
@catharticreverie 3 ай бұрын
Yup, Which while technically you could drink venom and be fine, there's a possibility you could still get poisoned by stupid things like having your gums abrased and scratched by brushing your teeth leading to tiny cuts you aren't even aware of.

When I think bout octopus intelligence, I always remember the one at a zoo, who, after hours, escaped his tank, went to another tank to have a snack, and instead of just chilling there where he could have another snack later, understood that he was on a top secret mission and went BACK to his original tank (also meaning he remembered which one that was). They may not be dolphin or orca smart, but they can pull off some Ocean’s 11 (ha) shit.

Loads of birds can see in the UV spectrum, it's not the most studied thing. Mice leave a urine trail because they don't have bladders and specialized hunters like white tail kites and falcons can see it. A lot of birds also see the iridescent colors of each others feathers differently than us, When they do things like flick their tails they're beaconing or communicating with one another. A white tail kite's tail is a very particular shade of white to them, seeing more colors means they can't get confused by something just because it's white, if it's this specific shade, it's another bird. --Ornithologist --Falconer --Burned Out Student

What bird do you fly?
@ComicusFreemanius
@ComicusFreemanius Ай бұрын
@@iankrom510 I've only trained one raptor, a juvenile white tailed kite and that was only to keep him sane and get some practice while I kept him as a passage (better chance of survival if they get past the hard year). I released him last November. The family stays in a tree outside my room, I watched the mom teach a son to hover last month. I wouldn't do falconry if I had to do it traditionally. I want to try a Ferruginous hawk, if I had the experience time, it's protected, even if you wanted to go to Mexico to trap one and fly it for a vacation. A prairie falcon would be nice too but not everyday. Just no time for it atm and hunting isn't as enticing to me as training. Kites are dope, all the best qualities of a bird of prey, huge wingspan, they hover, strong as crap, forward facing eyes so you get the cute owl / humanoid face somewhat but not irrational enough to peck you in the eye. Watched one mob a caracara few months ago. They're the perfect mixture of sweet and intimidating.

Depends on the Venom. Some proteins are complex and specialized to the point that they can not be simply absorbed through a membrane and need to enter the blood stream. Blood clotting agents come to mind. So there can be a functional different between poisons and venom although yes poison off course could be used as a venom as well.
@carnoraptorsquad6614
@carnoraptorsquad6614 4 ай бұрын
Actually about the eating venom you will probably be fine because venom is typically more complex molecules that will break down much easier then a poison the only danger of consuming venom is if you have a cut or ulcer that can allow the venom to be absorbed but if you don't have those you would actually be fine

Venom and poison are both toxins but not the same, you can drink venom with no issues if it doesn't get into your blood stream. Like a King cobra the venom volume from a bite, can kill around 20 people or a Elephant, but you can milk a King cobra and drink the venom with no ill effect (people have). Poison doesn't need to get into your blood stream to shorten your lifespan, if you was to lick a wild Dart frog, you're not in for a good time, with the poison just being in your mouth, getting to your blood stream or not. Venom in Squamates at least (Vipers, Elapids, Beaded-monsters, Komondo dragon monitors etc), is modified saliva.

Have you seen those youtube channels that buy and release exotic aquarium fish into the wild to pretend to catch them? They also release them into like sewer water tier stagnant pools, probably half killing the fish at the same time as well as "find them" while dumpster diving. I haven't watched your videos but you do fish reactions so if you are interested in spreading awareness i think it's something that would be good for the community to know so it can be called out and stopped. "Rob’s Aquatics" is one channel that does this, "Bass Fishing Productions" is another one, i used to watch them a lot before i knew better but i find it disgusting how they treat these animals.
