Avoid Rip Offs - Should you Fill Your Tires With Nitrogen? True or Scam

There are many opinions about filling tires with Nitrogen, some of them valid, and some of them not. I did some research and looked into whether filling your tires with nitrogen is a good idea or if it's a scam. One fact is Nitrogen is less likely to migrate through tire rubber than is oxygen, which means that your tire pressures will remain more stable over the long term. Racers figured out pretty quickly that tires filled with nitrogen rather than air also exhibit less pressure change with temperature swings.

Actually, nitrogen in tires started in aviation....where the temperature differences can go from minus 50 or 60F to over 150F in just a few moments. The truth is it isn’t as much the nitrogen, it’s the water vapor. That’s what expands a bunch! But the truth is that it’s not worth it on the average passenger car.

Consumer Reports purged a tire and refilled it with 95% nitrogen. Another tire was filled with regular air. Both tires sat for a year right next to each other. The regular air tire lost 1.3 psi more of air compared to the nitrogen tire. In a YEAR. Save your money.

Refilling the tires with N2 is mostly about getting the water vapor out and keeping it out. N2 is less soluble with water vapor than O2 is. Nitrogen will also not cause oxidation of inside of the tire.

Awesome video! People also say that the nitrogen molecules are larger, so it takes longer for them to lose air. But this causes people to believe that they never need to fill their tires. Im a car mechanic and hear that from customers all the time. The leading cause of car accidents is low tire pressure. You should check your tire pressure every month. And your recommended pressure never comes from the tire sidewall information!!! It comes from the vehicle manufacturer. Check your door jamb to fill your tires properly.

Tire shops use nitrogen generators like a branick. They are roughly $10k, they don’t need a farm of them or the need to buy tanks. They can fill cars, trucks, SUVs all day with 1 machine. That being said others have mentioned Costco it’s part of your membership and that’s a whole 60$ a year. In northern states it really helps in the fall and winter months with large swings in temperature. And as a side note it’s great in motorcycles. So I would say yeah don’t pay for filing individual tires, use places like Costco.

From my experience in hvac, nitrogen is used in two cases, one is purge oxigen during brazing to avoid oxidation inside copper tube while soldering with silver on the outside, the second use is pressure test to search leaks, this is used to avoid compressed air and their moisture, also nitrogen help to move the moisture inside the system. I think nitrogen helps to reduce the amount of moisture (and of course oxygen) and stabilize the system pressure, but I think in day by day tires this features are overkilling.

Good points, I wonder if any places vacuum out the tires before filling. I purchased a CTSV in 2011 that came from the factory with nitrogen, and I haven't needed to add any air since I've bought it. That's almost 8 years now, and my tires are nearly wore out need to be replaced. I've always attributed that to the nitrogen, or maybe its just the tires.

There are a few things wrong with some of your points. 1. Like you said, nitrogen doesn't change the pressure in your tire as much as air does when the temperature fluctuates. This isn't only beneficial for race cars. I don't know where you live Pete, but there are plenty of places where the temperature can fluctuate between 0F and 80F in a couple weeks. This is more than enough of a difference to make your TPMS indicator come on to warn you about low tire pressure. I work at a dealership who puts nitrogen in for free. The people who we put nitrogen in for rarely come back with the TPMS on when the weather gets colder. Lots of people with just air in their tires do. 2. When you put nitrogen in a tire you are supposed to fill the tire with the nitrogen and then deflate it. This lets most of the nitrogen out of the tire but also most of the rest of the oxygen. Then you pump it back up with nitrogen and you get about a 98% nitrogen concentration. If you did it again you would get nearly 100% nitrogen. Our nitrogen generator comes with a tool to measure the nitrogen concentration. 98% is acceptable. 3. You don't need hundreds of thousands of dollars for a liquid nitrogen tank farm. This is a ridiculous argument. Nitrogen generators can be purchased for $2000-$3000. Nitrogen may not be necessary in climates where the temperature is fairly stable all year round but it is an advantage in places that get huge temperature fluctuations like the northern states and all of Canada.

Great video but you didn't touch on the thumbnail and what it depicts. As you pump air into the tyre you get the normal oxygen to nitrogen ratio, but as the oxygen molecules are tiny enough to escape through the tyre over time and the nitrogen atoms aren't, this ratio will change over time. And this is most likely why you have to pump up a newly fitted tyre once in a while. - Hence most tyres already contain much more nitrogen than what's to be expected.
@PetesGarage
@PetesGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I enjoy discussing molecular particles. When you think about the thousands of ways those atoms can leak out of a tire, it seems pretty insignificant between Oxygen and Nitrogen
@johnnyfalcon1758
@johnnyfalcon1758 4 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY! If it is true that oxygen molecules escape faster than nitrogen molecules, then your tire will naturally purge the oxygen, leaving the "PRECIOUS" nitrogen molecules. And when you add air with a regular compressor, you will be increasing your nitrogen content every time, naturally. Nitrogenating tires is the worst "snake oil" automotive thing out there, by far!

I think the dealerships also got scammed in a way. In 2014 I bought a truck that came with N2 filled tires, (at the time I didn't even know it was a thing) and I'm sure I paid for it. But the dealership had to fill them for free as long as I owned the truck until one day I went to have my tires pressure topped off and they were the ones that explained what a scam it was and they had stopped offering N2. I'm sure it ended costing them way more in N2 costs than what they made on the "hidden" upgrade.

Great topic Pete. I have been saying the same thing for a while, but there are so many people who do not believe me so they pay for that extra 21% or 9% after factoring in the atmospheric air in the tire after mounting. I never thought of the 1 atm of air in the tire prior to pressurization, great catch on that initial volume. To those talking about condensation, any tire shop that doesn't have an air dryer is not one you want to visit. They use so much air in the bead breaking, bead setting, and filling that the air coming out of the compressor is hot so it can/will hold more water when compressed than cool air. Without a dryer their air lines would fill with water pretty quickly. Tire changers have additional filter/water separators to remove any moisture that may have made it past the dryer. My cynical thoughts: Do you think the shops actually pay for N2 cylinders or just pay for the green caps so you think you have pure nitrogen.

Nitrogen in tires is a rip off period. I have listened to the arguments for years and I promise you if the shop has a good air dryer on their compressor you can fill two tires with nitrogen and two with shop air and NEVER know which is which by the pressure in them. There are many variables in tire pressure including size, rubber composition, driving habits etc. Moisture in the tires will make more difference in pressure between hot and cold than any DRY gas combination. Now if the shop you choose does not have a dryer on their air system nitrogen will be more stable in a tire because moisture is removed when it is compressed.

So.....I actually was on a team that developed this Nitrogen application in 1976. It was first used at Caterpillar Tractor Company on large crawler tires. A fella named Ralph Grampp and I ran tests etc and found it worked in reducing tire wear.....but really only benefit was on HUGE tires that cost many thousands of dollars. I spent over 45 years in the nitrogen business, for a major manufacturer of Nitrogen. I think I'm qualified to say......... "pure" N2 in car tires is NONSENSE. US based autos benefit not one bit from using N2. If someone offers it to you free, then take it or not. It does not hurt the tire.

Also to those saying Nitrogen will leak out through the pores of the tire slower, Oxygen is pretty much the same size. @@9992ube So an atom of nitrogen is not smaller than an an molecule of air, which is nitrogen attached to several other atoms?
@9992ube
@9992ube 2 жыл бұрын
@@PetesGarage That is right. You don't count molecules or even molecular weight to determine size. Kinetic diameter determines smallest dimension of diatomic molecules (like N2 or O2). The electron cloud around the oxygen nuclei in the O2 molecule is smaller, more compact in size, due to attractive electrostatic interactions between the electrons in the cloud and the greater positive charge of the nuclei of the O atoms in the O2 molecule. Each oxygen atom has 8 protons in its nucleus, while each nitrogen atom has only 7 protons in its nucleus. Thus, the overall size of the electron cloud of the O2 molecule is smaller than for N2, in part because its electron cloud is drawn in closer to the O nuclei by the greater positive charge on the O nuclei. Result: O2 "permeates" approximately 3-4 times faster than does N2 through a typical rubber, as is used in tires, primarily because O2 has a slightly smaller effective molecular size than does N2. On paper, nitrogen is better for the tires. Firstly, more even pressure in all 4 seasons is a good thing because 90% of drivers don’t check/ maintain proper air pressure until there’s a problem. They run on soggy tires all winter long, which is bad for mpg and is not safe. Secondly, there’s a constant flow of air molecules through the rubber due to pressure. Nitrogen is inert; it does not oxidize rubber molecules, but oxygen does. So technically, nitrogen should slow down rubber degradation, aka dry rot. Is it worth the $ they want to charge? Not to me either.

my only comment here is Nitrogen _is_ used to fill airplane tires, for two reasons: 1.) Airplanes go really fast, so accelerating and braking can cause a lot of stress on the tire, causing heat. 2.) Going high enough in the air, if the tires were filled with regular air, then the tires would expand and contract depending on height, fairly easily. Less pressure up in the sky, and they definitely don't want tires to explode mid-flight. so unless you have those car-airplane combo cars and are a pilot, nitrogen isn't really necessary
@WilliamSmith-wr2pz

You are omitting an important aspect of this discussion. Filling with oxygen/compressed air brings water into the tire and nitrogen is dry. Water expands much more quickly than nitrogen and nitrogen expands 2 psi per 10 degrees increase in temperature. This is why race car tires are filled with nitrogen. So, not large temperature changes, no problem; driving around Midland, TX in July, it becomes very important. Also, depends upon where you get your compressed air.
