My previous tires had excessive edge wear so I knew I needed an alignment. If you don’t need one then you don’t need one.

Something I just noticed: Total toe for the front was the same before/after the alignment. Technician literally just nudged the steering wheel slightly and took the after reading & called it done.

I usually just take my wheels off the car and drop them off with the new tires. I did go to get an alignment once at Pep Boys and they wouldn't do it unless I bought new tires. Generally, alignment is a scam at these places.

You need to align the car when you touch the suspension parts, you can change 4 wheels and never need an alignment unless the car was already misaligned before which you can easily see in the tires you are replacing.

I had a shop do an alignment on my car. I told them I wanted a printout of the before and after. Conveniently, their printer happened to break during the alignment. It's too bad there are so many scammers out there. That's why people don't trust mechanics.

I'm an owner operator truck driver and have been for years, so I look at my tires on everything I own. My wife's car was needing tires, it was all wheel drive and tires were rotated regularly. The shop that put new tires said it needed alignment in order to get a warranty for the new tires, I told no and not to touch suspension. The old tires wore even, no cupping, and the vehicle drove straight down the road. They did the alignment and my wife called and told me she couldn't keep it on the road. When I got home I took it for a drive and was pissed, I wondered, felt like it had a mind of its own. Ended up taking it back twice before they got right again and didn't do business with the shop again.

Our local shops give free alignment for purchasing a set of 4 tyres Its one of the ways they stay competitive And u can send it back to redo the alignment job if u found something was off when u went out for test drive , and we often watch how they work on our car instead of just leave the car

Sure go ahead and check and do my alignment. For free I just bought tires from you. And the tpms etc lol. I just bought tires from you. I typically use Discount Tire cuz even Costco can't beat the prices (I always just look at tires a bit wider than the OE spec or a bit taller and that tends to be cheaper, too) and they always wanna charge for the install etc and I'm just like bruh Costco won't charge me. "Oh alright yes sir yes sir we will just take the money for the tires." Yeah I bet.
@artosbear
@artosbear 3 күн бұрын
I have no idea what Costco will do I've never ended up buying from them I just say it lol. And I never buy tires based on hardness because a 70,000 mile warranty hard tire is gonna side rot long before I hit 70k miles on those tires at my driving rate. I look for speed rating because thats way more indicative of tire quality for how long the sidewalls are gonna last.

Recently had new tires installed and they broke 2 center caps and glued them back on the rims. They never bothered to even tell me. I wrote a long honest review with photos on all the there review pages. I did bring new tire pressure sensors and had them save the old ones so I can see they were in fact replaced. Next time I need tires im taking the wheels off and bringing them to have swapped from the rims, no one is touching my car if I can help it.

I had that problem in 2012 when I got a Steve Walmsley mechanic here in Australia to do the wheel alignment on my Holden VY SS Commodore (similar to the Pontiac GTO coupe) after I replaced all of the rear toe Link rods, front tie rod ball joints, front ball joints, front & tear control arm bushes, front struts, rear shock absorbers, front & rear springs, etc. Well,I got him to fit some new tyres for me then I got him to do the wheel alignment,I even saw him adjust the front on the left hand side but I don't think that he touched the rear. He told me to bring it back to him in 1 months time so that he could recheck it , there should've been no need to. It was scrubbing out all 4 tyres in 6000 kilometres (3600 miles) & the Steering wheel was off centre so I took my car somewhere else to another tyre shop (called Jax tyres in Australia) & when they checked the wheel alignment it was all red on that sheet, The total rear toe setting was 13 millimetres when it was supposed to be like ±2 millimetres & they did a good job on the wheel alignment although the camber still remains in the red the toe was pretty much spot on,I can remember a tyre mechanic telling me that the toe is the most important thing & in my car the camber isn't way off. The camber seems to be different with the aftermarket polyurethane bushes fitted into the rear of the car, the original left hand Inner bush was made of nylon or something & it was pushed out of shape which side the tyre was scrubbing out on when I first bought the car in 2008. So the front & rear camber is a tad out which isn't a big deal & the cheaper tyres last me about 20,000 kilometres (12,000 miles) now, they just wear out now,not just scrub out !

That is incorrect math. You don’t use Pythagorean theorem here because it is not a right triangle. The pivot of the 8 inch leg moves the “height” leg of the triangle on a curved path because you are forming a circle with the outside “height leg” of the triangle when you turn the wheel. You are not sliding the leg up and down keeping the angle between the height and the width at 90 degrees. Is it close enough? yes. Is it accurate? No.

Speaking of high pressure. The dealership I went to they make you sign a piece of paper on the way out if you decline them fixing brakes or alignment so they absolve themselves from liability if something happens…..as if the car is so unsafe to drive now. Like they end to protect themselves. Total bs. Imagine a woman who knows nothing about cars. They would rip her off after scaring her to death. Ridiculous.

Bigger scam is at the dealership. Drive in and they have a “box” that scans your car on the way in. Apparently my Nissan has an alignment problem. Interesting. I got new tires in Utah and they were put in last August. My daughter has been driving it at school and just got home 2 weeks ago. Take it to dealer to get oil change and they alert me that the alignment needs to be done. I am thinking to myself, “that’s odd. No pull. No signs of wet on the vehicle.” And I listen to the guy. Tell him I’m just there for oil change. Suddenly they find 2000 bucks in other crap. I said “nope, just need the oil change I had a coupon for….” We are talking air filters for 70 bucks to replace. I’m like “ok, this is ridiculous.” Then I get print out when done. Their own paperwork shows zero wear and tear on tires as they are all wearing normally and nothing is off. Btw, you have a right to get the old parts. Did they give you the old sensors? All,of these dealerships are rip offs. This is the only way they make money and they have perfected ways to essentially rape you as you go through.

I engineered and built my own lazer alingment machine and was able to correct 2 different hawkeye hunter alimnmemt machines one i thing was sue to not doing proper rolling compensation and skipping steps. I went to a local claimed steering specialist, the arms of the machine are not mounted securely, blowing in the wind.. most alingment machines need an alimnmemt, most likely they wont even ballance the tires right because the calibration is usually even worse on those, most shops only use 1/4 weights making it impossible to do correctly if its over 1.5 oz or soo pretty crazy

Here's how they did it in 4 minutes... Tire was already on the alignment machine, mechanic tells sales guy hey 0.16. Sales guy calls you, you say go ahead. Sales guy yells to the tech, do it. Tech already has ranches ready to go, bumps them, done. Time wise no problem but the out of spec BS is indeed BS.

I had the tyres changed on my car at big brand Halfords in the UK. I knew I needed an alignment as tyre wear was considerable. Afterwards they said "the tie rods have seized, but we've done the best we can". So which is it? You managed to do it, or not?! Note that they didn't give me ANY report, before or after. I asked how much it would cost to 'unseize' the track rods: "about £300 as we would need to cut them off". When I got home I checked the tie rods myself. Absolutely zero evidence of anything having been done! But I left it at that knowing I had other major issues (lower arm and cv knuckle needed replacing) so the alignment would need to be done 'again' anyway. While I was at it I changed the track rods too, which were definitely NOT seized in any way. After replacing all those parts myself I took it to an independent garage and they gave me a report. Apparently I got it pretty close by sight alone, so their adjustments were negligible. I won't bother complaining to Halfords because I have no proof now, but rest assured they'll never see me again. There's a reason why they're known as *Halfrauds* here.

When you install new rings and pistons into a honed bore - should you hear a kind of sandpaper type scraping sound - not super loud, but definitely noticeable? I just installed my first piston - did a hand rotation test and could hear the pistons scraping slightly - kind of disheartening... I took piston back out and see nothing wrong with rings or cyclinder. Is this a normal noise? Crank turns quite easily still... very confused!

Some years ago, I had my Honda dealership do a 4 wheel alignment on my 2006 Honda CR-V that I bought new. Eight days later, I went to the now defunct Sears Automotive for tires. I declined a wheel alignment. In spite of this, they did a wheel alignment anyway (!) and claimed it was needed. I then brought my car back to my dealership, and told them what happened. They told me it was a good thing I brought it back to them, because it needed an alignment. I brought the car back to Sears, and they wanted to charge me for an alignment. I declined, and never got an alignment again. That was 16 and 1/2 years ago, and I still own the same car. Since I've bought it, it never had any abnormal tire wear. I don't even remember why I had my dealership do an alignment on it in the first place.

Could have said everything in about 3 minutes. Your math also assumes that there are 50 or so cars lined up for alignments. Shorter video would be more effective. Don't try to be a TV show.
