Color Me Beautiful by Beverly Jackson is a great book! Has color samples for each season ( like shades of blue for each season) Spring/Autumn (warm) and Summer/Winter (cool). And examples of clashes/matches on people, including makeup examples! Plus it's nostalgic seeing the 80s hair, makeup and shoulder pads in the book.

For color, I used the David Zyla method (you can find a few videos of his on KZfaq). It's VERY personalized and takes some time, but I still enjoyed it immensely. For color seasons, I lean to a warm/neutral autumn and I'm pretty sure I'm a Kibbe Soft natural, so that's how I've been dressing - I hope I'm correct! Lol

Personal colors are fascinating to me, partly because I had such a hard time figuring it out! It took years. I have greenish brown eyes that are warm, but cool ashy brown hair and high contrast, fair olive skin. It seemed I could straddle winter and autumn, but all of those in-between types (dark winter, twilight winter, etc) never worked exactly. They mostly worked, but not ALL the colors. And then some colors I know were my very best would be missing. I wanted perfection! I wound up hiring a professional and they typed me as dark winter. That didn't feel right, so I hired another one. They typed me as an autumn/winter combo, I can't remember their name for it. Finally, I gave up on the seasonal analysis entirely and had my colors done by John Kitchener. He doesn't use seasons, each person's color file is unique and I wound up with a binder of over 100 fabric swatches picked for me based on skin/hair/eyes. Really interesting and filled with nuance, which my dorky detail oriented yet artistic side appreciates.

That's really interesting! I feel I have that same color combo. Through trying over and over again, I've come up with a couple super winning colors for me but I try to not completely rely on a color season to give me everything I need to know. 😁

I had a stylish coworker who told me there are “green people” and “red people”. I think she was on to something. She was a “red person”. She had cool coloring but even the cool greens that she could supposedly wear didn’t look as good on her as warm reds which didn’t look as good as a cool reds which made her shine. I had warm neutral skin and clearly warm hair. I have been told most of my life that I can’t wear red-even the warm reds which I can supposedly wear I’ve been told to keep away from my face. Whenever I wear green, unless it’s too dusty, I get compliments even if it’s a cool green.

While I agree with choosing colors and styles that make yourself feel good and comfy, I don’t agree with this new trend of “influencers” coming out with “don’t look old”, don’t look frumpy”, don’t look unfashionable, etc. that are just pushing sponsored items and selling something. Like, we all are individuals. If we ran around with leggings, uggs, messy buns and fuzzy sweater coats we’d all look the same. Like high schoolers, actually…

That's very observant. Everyone is trying to be the same "stylish, elegant, classy woman" these days, and not only that, they do their makeup to tune their faces to the same standard so we have a society of young women who all look alike. It's so strange to me! I lived through the 80s and 90s when people looked so unique. Each celebrity was like a unique candy in a box of chocolates. Now, I can't tell the difference between Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Gal Godot, or Jennifer Lawrence. What is going on? What happened to unique beauty?

I agree, Ashley. I'm near 70 and know what colors I look good in and what I don't look good in, and that truly has not changed much for me over the years. I'm know I'm truly an old school "casual spring" in my day-to-day life. I go for the warmer colors that are not quite as dark as the autumn colors. No thanks to hot pink anything, including lipstick and tops, and I don't care if I'm in style or not. Ditto silver toned jewelry. I'm not especially fond of black or white. I do have an original "Color Me Beautiful" book that came with the actual fabric swatches way back in the day, and these still work for me. The trouble with that, of course, is that "swatch" colors have changed. I thank God for thrift stores and church rummage sales and the fact that I found some of my favorite Revlon now discontinued lip shades and bought a bunch of them awhile back on Ebay and at Big Lots. I'm still into colors like salmon, certain shades of purple, apricot, some coral, beige, warmer browns, navy. Am I truly French classic style when Marie Anne Lecoeur says that does NOT include browns? Lol. And while I like small print flower patterns, I know I've never been nor want to be total boho style, either (Elise Buch). When last fitted for eyeglasses, I chose frame colors and a style I knew were flattering to me, despite the fact that the 50ish gal with long silver stringy hair (ugh) was trying to sell me some pop-eyed silver/lilac frames and said she thought my choice was - wait for it - "aging." I feel the game with ALL influencers is to keep us all spending $$$ all the time in fashion, in household decor colors, and don't even get me started on the medical and dental industries.

I think the camera has brightened the colors here and increased contrast a bit, but I'd agree it's not a *perfect* soft summer color, it's just a color that is softer than I used to pick and it lights up my skin so I don't question it too much 😀

@@unblahyourself Yea, that's true, it can be hard with colors on a screen, for sure. I'd just say, I wouldn't 100% write off the possibility that you could be a winter! The "bright" colors that you used for comparison are basically neon, and not a fair representation of the winter spectrum of colors.. Also, I just watched your newer video about age where you are wearing a black floral shirt - and you look fabulous in it!

This was enlightening and I agree about draping with no makeup. People need to know that as you age, your complexion and hair change requiring a change in wardrobe/makeup colors. When I was young I had dark hair, dark eyes and high contrast and was clearly a winter seasonal palette. Now, my hair is salt and pepper and my skin is translucent and has red flushing on my face. Bright color colors that used to match my vibrancy and contrast overwhelm. Muted, saturated colors look best on me now. Color is interesting because there are colors we are attracted to or have a negative association. And, colors set a mood and can cause joy, stress and calmness. For example, there are colors that I love to look at but could never wear because they make me uncomfortable. I like to wear colors that give life to my complexion without overpowering. Also, color affects your body conformation and must be considered. And color affects the social setting and would be a great topic to discuss in future videos. Examples: business, weddings, church, parties, casual, symphony, etc.

Yes! My own coloring has changed so much since I was young. I am so low contrast now that sometimes I feel like I can't even see my face if I'm wearing the wrong color. I had been supplementing with makeup to increase my contrast but all they had to do is start wearing the right colors!I had been supplementing with makeup to increase my contrast but all I had to do is start wearing the right colors. I had no idea that these muted shades were my colors. That said, I would love to wear bright red, orange, and electric blue all day long...

Honestly, I was on a very wrong track with SCA for most time of my life as well. When I was a kid, my mom gave me a book about cosmetology which was from the early 80's. SCA was part of it. I was only 7 years old when I was like "Yeah, that has to mean I am a summer". And I bet in 4 seasonal color analysis I would be classified as a summer. I never really paid too much attention at what colors did to my complexion, I didn't really understand what it was all about, I was just assuming I was a summer and a lot of other people thought that too. I have level 8 hair, can look very blonde in certain lighting and will appear warm in direct sunlight, but looks a bit more dulled out and muted in the shadows or especially cool white artificial lighting (it even looks almost medium brown in that type of lighting). I also always thought I had blue-grey eyes. Why? Because it looked like that in pictures all the time. So I thought I was medium value, muted in chroma and cool in hue. But when I got more into the topic of SCA I felt like something was just not sitting right for me. I didn't see the typical SCA checks' effects and didn't feel like summer colors were doing me a favor. I just knew I liked purple and certain shades of green on myself, but didn't understand which ones exactly. I then did a lot of research and figured I am not cool, I am neutral-warm. So I thought I might be Soft Autumn, but these colors did grey me lots. I felt like the clarity was just not right, so I went for True Autumn colors. They looked somewhat good, but not perfect, kinda grungy. I then got my colors done professionally because I knew I was somewhat on the right track but still kinda off. I turned out being Light Spring. I was a bit shocked because I had ruled out Spring ages ago, because typical Spring colors are overpowering on me. Light Spring happens to be absolutely stunning on me, I can actually see it. But I don't like going for pastels-brights at all, I primarily wear neutrals. It still helped me a lot because I now found my perfect red lipstick, my perfect blusher and eye shader color. And my eyes actually are rather blue-green than blue-grey. I have golden bits in my iris, which I never was able to see. But with the right make up and hair color, it is obvious. People are always asking me if I have green eyes now. It's a color I always loved but never saw in my own coloring. Thing is: I still love wearing black because it's giving me that edgy vibe that is so much my thing, and I can see why it is "not my color" but it still is "my color" in terms of how I love to look like. I put lots of effort into creating at least a small capsule with only my colors, to wear them whenever I don't fancy wearing any make up. That does make a huge difference. And I am glad my work clothes are in my colors because on the earliest shift, I really don't wanna deal with getting up earlier to do my make up. I am still wondering how I could not see that my skintone is warmer than I thought it was, I can now see the yellow-golden undertone very easily and the slight gold touch in my natural hair color. I prefer wearing a bleached, slightly warm-white color, but that's just what I had when I was a kid, so it is not even looking artificial (and still quite easy to achieve). Overall I love the world of SCA, especially because color theory (in many ways, shapes and forms) is one of my obsessions, but I do not fully stick to its rules. As I said, I still love black and wear it a lot. I still wear colors not in my palette, but it is very fun to understand why you like certain things and what they actually do to your look. Black does make me look more pale and greyed and adds shadows to my face. But that's what I like. I am totally into alternative-edgy-chic. Wearing "regular" clothing in a fitted, slightly tailored shape and a black color makes achieving this aesthetic incredibly easy for me. Edgy is the opposite of harmony, so this makes total sense.

I love all of this! You actually need to make your own video about this. 😅 It's so weird how we simply can not "see" ourselves sometimes. I was certain I was a winter for a while so I often picked bright jewel colors for my clothes. I knew I liked purple on me too but the deep shades I picked were always too intense and I'd end up changing because it wasn't sitting right. I never even considered lilacs, like that shade didn't even exist to me I never considered celery green but that color is MAGIC on me... something I never would've found without seasonal color analysis.

I was color draped in the 80's when there were only 4 seasons, which I did not clearly fall in to. I recently got re-draped and ended up in the soft autumn group, which was a total surprise. I actually LOVE most of those colors and have ventured into some new to me colors with sucess. I now always carry my swatches with me and I am so pleased with my edited wardrobe. My makeup color problems are solved too! This explains why red lipsticks of all sorts look great on others but harsh on me. (There is no red in the soft autumn palette.)

What caused for me the biggest obstacles in determining my type were sayings that your hair color needs to be almost blackish brown to be a winter. If you're cool toned with medium dark hair and definitely too dark for summer there would be no season left for you. Plus it confused me that I need different colors in scarfs, tshirts, and pullovers. If I only focus on pullovers everything fits :)

I believe you’re warm and muted, close to naturel. Cool and muted colors wich is close to natural also work for you so good because of the contrast to your skin and eyes color (same advice give makeup artists: if you want your eyes look greener you can use purple and violet colors). And one more point: on the warm and muted draping you use cool green. You should compare green to green and chouse wich one is warmer. So I see the confussion here in warm and cool muted shades. Good luck in rhis journey 🌈

Yes I still have a lot of confusion as to warm and cool colors... especially because I can wear both as long as they are muted. I have been thinking about this for a couple days now and I think the reason I have had so much trouble figuring out my colors is because my eyes are actually a golden green but the rest of me is pretty neutral-cool. Depending on what I want to highlight I can swing it warm or cool but I am definitely still sorting out which is which! 😄

as someone with olive skin, i’ve always found it so difficult to really understand what is going on with my skin, since green is both warm and cool lol. my worst colour has always been orange, i’ve known this since i was a kid, it always made me look very sick haha. with the 12 colour season wheel my closest bet is deep winter, though people have told me many differing opinions about this. i always kind of theorised a middle ground between a few subseasons like deep winter and soft summer. i think im within that middle ground though definitely leaning more deep winter. i think there is a 16 season one too which is a similar concept to this? maybe? lol. i dont mind too much though, so long as my colours are wearable and make me feel my best i will always choose that over my best colours lol

Of course, you look beautiful in almost anything, but I think you really shine the most in warm colors, and the more muted and cool tones washes you out a little, and also I don't see harmony between those colors and your skin... Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact video in which I heard this, but basically, it's possible to be warm toned and use cool toned foundation and vice versa, and that's because we match our foundation to our OVERtone, which CAN be different to our undertone...
