3 hours from your car. It's midnight. 6 hours and the sun comes up. It totally AMAZES me how people never think the sensible option. Chill here for a few hours and pretty soon I'll be able to see. I'll see the track and the chances of breaking my legs is far less.

Well the dark in places like that is complete. Going out without supplies and then walking in the dark was bad, but its easy for even the experienced to become lost in the wilderness. Growing up in the wild we were taught ways to avoid getting lost, but also ways to hold out if/when we do get lost sense it was so easy to have happen.

Even just a big a** arrow, pointing to where you are. Takes less energy to make a large, visible arrow. I was thinking the same thing when I watched the dude that got lost in western Australia trying to find gold, too. He also saw multiple planes and they actually were searching for him so putting anything recognizably man made, large enough to see from the air, raises chances of being found by a huge amount.

I don't understand why people respond to unfamiliar territory by pushing ahead further into even more unfamiliar territory. I'm sure everyone has heard that if you get lost, stay where you are. It's very wise advice and it blows my mind that the people on this show always seem to do the total opposite.

I went out on a very short hike about 10 years ago, it was supposed to last about 45 minutes. it turned out to last about 2 hours, and really drained me. I was rehabbing, and half the time used a four wheeled walker with a seat! The ladies retreat I was attending talked me into going on this "easy hike"--which turned out to be very challenging for me. I hydrated well the day before, and that day before I left. Making sure I drank 16 ounces of water before I left for the hike. Then I took 16.9 ounces of water with me on the hike in my back pack, along with a first aide kit, small blanket and flashlight and fire starting kit--just in case--since we were starting out after 2pm. WE did not get back to the lodge until after 4:30pm easy, and I was totally exhausted and out of water. I wished I had taken about 3 bottles of water. My legs cramped and I had had to sit down and rest for 45 minutes before continuing the hike. I felt pretty foolish. I have NEVER done that again! I stick to city sidewalks and areas that can accommodate my walker, and I always have about 64 ounces of water with me in my large insulated thermos--with ice. I carry another bottle of water just in case. I would rather bring home water than run out. Lesson learned.

I prefer the episodes where there’s a fairly unpredictable accident & someone uses their intelligence & sheer will to live in order to survive. Like the guy who got trapped under his quad - came prepared but couldn’t reach supplies, lost his leg but still survived through mental toughness & skinning beavers for warmth.

I'm glad he made it and unfortunate another example of well-intended people going out for a short excursion and they don't tell anyone where they are going or when they will be back. Plus it was unfamiliar, very dangerous rough terrain and at night with no compass and walking three hrs in then trying to find your way back would be utterly impossible. And also no provisions or water?

@ambidextrousshooter6463 Signaling mirrors are included in miltary survival kits. They come with built-in "aiming system" which is basically just a see through area at their center because if they're aimed correctly, they can definetely be effective at getting the attention of low flying aircraft...especially if the aircraft is already looking for survivors. It's a lot better than no signaling device. And he was specifically talking about the guy in this video who already had a mirror...not someone magically pulling a mirror out of their ass.

Let's do some basic math together... since 1 day equals 24 hours, we know that 2 days equals 48 hours (2x24) and 3 days equals 72 hours (3x24). So you see, if you've been lost for 77 hours, that's 3 days and 5 hours... not 5 days. Again, this is called basic math.

Man, I always think I'm crazy when I do things like go camping and I go for a walk and it gets dark and I have to walk on a road that's not well lit and doesn't have a sidewalk and I have to scooch to the side when a car comes but its in a residential neighborhood,ha

I’ve been to that area to see the volcano. There’s an observatory that looks over the volcano field. I would think the monitors would detect people out there. Then again, it is an incredible amount of land so the observatory may not cover everything.
