This was such an emotional, heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting rescue Ive ever seen. Cant imagine the 48 hrs of pain and fear after you’ve already lost your best friend. A great group of guys pulled together and did everything they could save Sam. Losing Blake had already broken their hearts and definitely had Angels watching over them. I don’t think they did anythings wrong either. The wrath of nature is unforgiving, no matter how much planning and practicing you do. They did not go in half hazard and were experienced in this kind of skiing. Still so terrifying… RIP Blake I hope your baby made it safe into the world and carried out your legacy through the years ❤️‍🩹

It's good to see the group had covered all bases incase of emergency. They all had beacons, they had a good camp set up, they had snowmobiles and phones. This brought a hopeless situation up to dire. Even with all that, they still lost a friend. Heart breaking. RIP Blake.

@henricarlson4250

it's a very unfortunate tragic story. while they were well prepared, by no means did they cover all bases. they neglected a critical piece of equipment. sat phones were invented in 1998. There was no legitimate excuse for four experienced backcountryskiers to go to a remote location without a viable bailout. they could have called for rescue the moment they dug themselves out of the avalanche. instead, they didn't establish contact until 30 hours later. This is stuff you learn in fundamentals of mountain wilderness travel, which a lot of experienced people never get. Assumptions lead to tragedy, while hopefully hard lessons are learned.

I remember this story years ago. These guys endured a nightmare and the love of your buddies trying to save each others lives with everything they had. So tragic and sad they lost one but saved Sam against all the odds. I’ve been in a similar situation with my femur snapped in half. When I woke up in hospital my foot was just below my knee. The swelling of the muscles pulled the broken bones up side by side. I had a 5 % chance of surviving from this injury as well as most of the bones in my body being broken, blood loss and severe head and organ trauma. They had to cut pieces of my skull off to allow the brain to swell. When I finally pulled through the worst of it they flew me to another hospital, strapped me to a Gurnee, hooked my foot to a machine and slowly over 3 days pulled my foot stretching my leg to full length as I screamed in pain slipping in and out of consciousness before surgically reattaching my femur bone with rods, plate and screws. I got help immediately after my accident and barely survived and this guy Sam had to rot away for days before getting to a hospital. What a fighter. That would if killed a lesser man for sure. He has a great wife to stand by him through this. Many women would of left that problem in the wind. And such a Good group of guys. What a story.

There's people who can't comprehend how others hike in the woods when a rabid animal or a falling rock could do them in at any moment. Much too dangerous. They prefer to watch movies and read books. Then there's the hikers who look at the bookworms and can't comprehend how their lives are so sedentary and, therefore, unhealthy. They think life is much better being fit and living life in the real world. Who's wrong. Maybe both, maybe neither. You get to decide how much fun you want to have and how much danger you are willing to exchange for that lifestyle. It's ok if you don't understand as long as you respect other people's decisions.

They said "He's not dead till he's WARM and dead." But they couldn't have continued CPR until a rescue helicopter could be summoned and arrived. If in charge of the scene I'd have opted to take off the necrotic leg, especially once the pain meds and antibiotics were there. I'm not an MD, and thank goodness I wasn't in charge of the scene! I think that his was a very, very close call and he was lucky to have survived. Being septic can be deadly in very few hours even without hypothermia.

Unlike the people in most episodes of this show, these guys were actually prepared, and did everything right. I’ve watched enough of these by now to know that when a member of a group isn’t part of the narration, and when other members start talking about that persen in the past tense, it means they’re dead. So I knew just a few minutes into this episode that Blake didn’t survive. Knowing that made me tear up when he announced that he was going to be a dad. His poor wife, and the child who never knew their father. Thank God for the friends who did all the right things so Sam could go home to his wife and children.

Extremely stressful situation. They did everything right. But when things went wrong in similar critical incidents these things may have helped, I’m no expert, but.. After avalanche speed to get blake breathing rREAL determination was needed FAST. Concentrate on Blake because he wasn’t breathing. Should they have tourniquets Sams leg? To stop bleeding or would he have lost leg because no circulation. Think ahead-take ski poles. Then clean Sam’s leg at tent. Could have carried skis up to get poles so didn’t have to walk down next day. Could have got poles at night by following footsteps up at night to save time in the morning. Helicopter should have dropped pain killers, dressings and antibiotics for EMT to give-anyone can give Panadol & antibiotics-but EMT can surely give injections? What about proper cleaning and dressing of wounded leg, splinting properly? I think you have to ask the’what ifs’ Have plan B in case A doesn’t work. Sadly: 1-couldn’t get Blake breathing 2-couldn’t clean, splint and dress Sam’s leg or give him pain relief 3-couldn’t get help to him 4-Couldn’t get him to help. However They certainly did try their very best to revive Blake and obviously it wasn’t possible. They did their very best for Sam and it was a success. I am sorry about what happened to really great guys. I can’t imagine what it was like getting down after the shock of Blake dying. We don’t know why things happen, it’s a mystery of life that we all deal with. God bless you all.

@BohoAstronaut
@BohoAstronaut 6 ай бұрын
They usually do. I was wondering why they didn't this time as well. Maybe the storm was so bad they couldn't even lower anything down or maybe whoever reached out to them told the rescuers they had supplies, which they did. They never mentioned being short food or water. They definitely needed antibiotics but that's something that always requires a prescription. It seems silly to worry about prescriptions at that point but doctors can never be too careful. If they provide a prescription to someone without seeing them and the person dies, even if it has nothing to do with the antibiotics, they risk being sued and/or losing their license.They did find a team willing to make their way to the Basecamp during the storm to help and provide the best medical attention they could out there. I thought that was pretty awesome.
@K9River
@K9River 6 ай бұрын
I'm guessing plan A was to use the chopper while plan B was already in motion hiking in. An EMT was already there, so that was good. Using antibiotics and pain meds without knowledge could easily result in death. They may very well have had food and water, so no extra supplies were needed.
