My first day in South India saw me arrive in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Although the south has a reputation for being more laid back than fhe north, I honestly didn’t know what to expect.
Would it be like Mumbai, but without the traffic? Or perhaps Delhi, without the pollution?
Keen to find out, I embarked on a wild first day in Chennai, beginning with a rickshaw ride from perhaps Tamil Nadu’s most charismatic driver.
We arrived at perhaps the best local restaurant in town, Sangeetha Pure Veg, to try my first taste of South Indian cuisine.
The Tamil thali that i was served had various sambar pickles, curries and rice which was combined on a banana leaf, and eaten by hand.
The banana pudding and sweet lassi were also delicious too.
After lunch, i was keen to check out the city’s famous beauty spot and headed in the direction of Marina beach (the second longest in India).
After meeting some of the locals i was approached by a man on horseback offering me a ride. Would he prove to be a scammer? After some negotation i took his offer of a ride down the beach to get closer to the shore line
Later on, there was time for some target practice, sugar cane juice, and even a kind lady who repaired my bag for me.
Before heading to the station to try out Chennai’s impressive metro from central station, there was also time to meet an honest shoe cleaner who I rewarded for cleaning my shoes so well after my walk on Marina beach.
Although I encountered many scammers in the local riskshaw drivers in order to get there, it was a great first day in Chennai, south India.
