I use to hate violate garden because I though that she was too much of an marry sue. I only watched the first episode because I thought that it’s just not my taste. A month or so after that, I rewatched it, and at episode 3 I finally realized why this show was so adored by many people. I just love the fact how violent doesn’t only grow by the things she went through, but also the things others did. And being that she as an auto memories doll, that’s a fitting concept. For those who haven’t watched it yet, Please do. I promise you won’t regret it.

And that is a very good counter argument of this character being so misunderstood, just like the show itself People don't seem to be used to stories of self discovery that take place in the aftermath of either a war, or highschool, and would rather have something that's a coming of age, bombastic and epic set piece in their narrative, or something to use as a fetish, which i'm not saying anyone shouldn't enjoy these, but people aren't just open minded enough and just watch stuff through what's presented and not through it's substance and the mentality that was established in this series. Nice essay there

A well-spoken and wonderful analysis of Violet Evergarden. Love the new content. *MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD In relation to the arms allegory towards the end of the video, I would also add that her gaining mechanical arms reflected the viewer perception of Violet having a mechanical and militant personality. To her, the mechanical arms were a means to carry out her duties with the same effectiveness as her normal arms. Thus, it didn't matter to her whether they were real or machine. Throughout the show, Violet uses them for more organic actions rather than just tools. She writes letters to express the emotions of others. She jumps across a lake holding an umbrella. She flies a plane and defeats enemy soldiers with close-quarters combat. The final nail in the coffin, for me, at least, was when *SPOILERS she recorded the dying moments of an allied soldier using the "muscle memory" of her mechanical arms. At first, I wrote off her rationale for using muscle memory as an odd ability that only makes sense in the context of the show being an anime, a medium where people having supernatural and unexplainable abilities is the norm. After watching the video, I realized her arms facilitated her growth as a human being by allowing her to do things she couldn't do with her 'real' hands that were trained to only fire guns and hurt enemy soldiers. When she sacrificed her arms to disable to train bomb, she was letting go of the mechanical crutch that was her arms. She could shed them and finally become human. That being said, her arms were super cool and if the show gets renewed, I hope she gets new mech arms.

Violet is so well done as a character. In 13 episodes (plus 2 specials), we see Violet slowly recover from her complex psychological issues and likely PTSD, and to become a vibrant and emotional person. But the best part is her development is so natural, and never once is there a sudden leap without context. We watch her grow as a person and overcome the struggles she has.

I saw her losing her arms as a fresh start. She used her hands to take so many lives. Now she has new arms which, to me, represents her starting a new. Using her new hands to connect people, and bring people’s feelings to life.

One thing I realized when watching the show is at the end of every episode the other person in that episode describes their experience of meeting violet in past tens witch to me makes it way more interesting. I can't even tell you how many people I've seen call the show bad, call Violet "just another tsundere," and talk about the beautiful animation like it's somehow a bad thing??? I could tell that none of those people watched beyond the first episode. I typically give an anime 3 episodes to hook me, and boy was I hooked! I didn't love it after the first episode, I didn't care about Violet, and that didn't change much with episode two, but episode three got me good, and from then on I was a sobbing mess. I'm talking UGLY crying!

I love the anime with all my heart, and rightfully so, episode 10 was the most heartbreaking episode in my opinion. And even thinking about it now, I still shed a tear. The show as well as it’s opening gives us a great understanding of Violet, how she is torn by losing a loved one. I personally just watch through anime fully if I like it, but this anime hit me hard, and it’s fascinating how KyoAni gave us this ride of emotions through Violet.

Other than Violet and Gilbert, Dietfried, Gilbert's brother, was actually the character I liked the most! Although he does come off as cynical and mean-spirited, especially towards Violet, I can really see that as the only possible human response at the time. It is implied that Violet killed Dietfried's entire crew, and although it is not her fault, from Dietfried's perspective, dehumanizing her and being angry is the most humane thing that any person could do, because he saw her act violently towards his men, whose deaths he felt responsible for. Dietfried also is dealing with the trauma of the war, trauma of losing his brother, having to become the Bougainvillea heir (which he had given up to Gilbert and now that responsibility is once again pushed onto him) and it is also implied that his upbringing was far more tragic than Gilbert's due to an abusive father. In episode 12, he even seems jaded towards higher officials, talking openly of Gilbert and sadly questioning the idea of peace. Other veterans within the story have support (Hodgins, Spencer, Violet), but Dietfried doesn't seem to have this, having to take care of his grieving mother. While Violet shows an exaggerated version of a veteran, I think Dietfried embodies many, especially the repressed anger and pain and outwards cynicism towards the world. Bruh, I don't know, i just saw a lot of pain and sadness in him and then you see the family pictures where he was always smiling, and then you realize he doesn't smile much anymore, and it just really hit me.

Violet prosthetics are a symbol of how violet becomes more human. In the beginning, she is like a doll with mechanic arms, but at the end of the story she sacrifice her arms while she saves people from the planted bomb on the bridge, instead of killing with her hands, she helped people with her mechanic hands, she became "human" again.

Well the whole story of Violet Evergarden as come to an end the last movie came out last year in December and I watched it. Her efforts to find the meaning of love went full circle. Don't want to spoil what happens as it is the best anime movie I have seen. In short the movie made me cry of sadness and happiness even more than the anime or the first film and had the best fireworks scene in all anime can't change my mind. Sad that we won't get anymore anime adaptations or most likely not get one. A great series it was.

Just to add one more thing. Seeing from a post of a veteran and a reaction interview on a veteran. Both of them felt the first 3 episode is very relatable. This might just be proven that if the viewer that drop it may also be the same person that doesn't know how a veteran feel or even talk to one because we have a privilege of not going into war as a soldier. It's not what most new generations can feel and be related too. But, it is very relatable to family members who have a veteran in their family or is a veteran themselves. Some even suggest that Violet Evergarden is a essential show to teach family members on how to deal with veterans that they can't connect, understand and trouble in communications. If they still fail to keep it on and say it's op Mary Sue stuff. Then they will never know and understand what war can do to a human.

As someone who has trouble picking up on things that people mean but aren't saying explicitly I relate to her too. I also have been described as emotionless by other people but like Violet and Leon that's just my face. I'm pretty sure it was meant to be because of her military upbringing but Violet has traits similar to autistic people and people with right hemisphere learning disabilities.

omg, you're analysis was on point sis, way to go. you brought up them automail arms and it hit me that they're literally the representation of how violet connects with people. when people connect to others, they literally use their hands/arms to reach out, to touch, to hold. but violet can't do that, all she has is them military issue prosthetics which means that's for literals how she interacts with civilians. omg, levels.

Violet Evergarden was a hard anime for me to watch, and not just because it had me ugly crying every other episode, but because of how much I found myself relating to Violet, although certainly not because I'm either a combat veteran or a double amputee. I'm on the autism spectrum (the high-functioning end, specifically what is known as Asperger's Syndrome), and many of Violet's idiosyncrasies are ones that I also exhibit: flat affect, difficulty expressing my own emotions and interpreting those of others, difficulty in non-verbal communication, and for a long while I had the extreme bluntness and lack of tact that Violet intially exhibited (the latter of which led to many tense, and sometimes explosive, exchanges). Even though it's a hard watch for me, still, after many viewings, it's one of my all-time favorites, because it's very hard for me to find protagonists that I can relate to. When people with autism are portrayed in media, they're either on the high-functioning savant end of the spectrum, on the end where they're essentially crippled by their autism, or a combination of savant and invalid. so to me it was incredible to find an example in my favorite medium of someone who would fall outside of those archetypes. Never mind that it's KyoAni at their finest, the voice acting in each language is superb, and the writing is fucking incredible. Truly a gem.

When i watched violet evergarden my first time was when i was around 12 y/o. I found that violet evergarden was so cold and not understanding of other peoples emotions extremely relatable in some way even though im a very sensetive person myself but back then i thought that i was one of the most insensitive. I hurted people without knowing it bc i thought i didnt matter to my friends so that I could always leave my friends and get new ones as cold as it sounds but some people bored me or i just used them as company and if i didn't need it anymore then i just chose to be either alone or get new friends. When i was 12 i had a hard time understanding my emotions especially bc if i would talk about a normal topic from myself that isnt sad at all, like i would start sobbing and i wouldn't know why. I didnt understand why so many people didnt really matter that much to me or why i would start crying at some points etc. I think i only cried at ep 7 and the other ep i just teared up or only nearly cried. I must say i rewatched it when i turned 13 and when i was 14. I was waaaay more emotional when i watched it with 14. I cried at every episode after ep3. I think it has smth to do with that i generally used a defense mechanism that was that i didn't really notice/feel my feelings in order to function well or to not make more trouble and behave well. When i turned 13 i became depressed bc of some reasons and ngl but depression helped me somehow to understand why I'm like the way i was. I quickly received therapy and 2 months after therapy i got send into a psychatry bc of my mental health getting worse and worse and i couldn't deal with it. I didnt really get therapy but it still helped me to get out of my depression but not out of my depressed thoughts and unhealthy behaviors etc. I was so lucky to have such a good therapist who helped me to understand myself and made me realize that I am actually a very sensitive person who just didnt want to deal with my feelings when I was younger bc it was a way to cope. I just now have the problem that still dont really always understand my emotions but i let them happen. It was not like i knew why i didn't cry. I really didn't and i wanted to cry often bc i found it so unhuman of me not to cry in those situations. I now am very sensitive who literally will cry watching captain Americas first movie but i wont cry when someone cries in front of me bc i will focus on looking what i can do to help the person. Maybe give them a hug or do they just need someone to talk to etc. Violet evergarden really really helped me and i felt like she was a very relatable character. I didnt care that she was good at almost everything but bc we had the same weakness. It helped me a lot to know that i wasnt alone with that problem bc i never heard of this problem. (sorry if there will be any grammar mistakes. English isn't my first language)

hi! how r u stranger? Loved reading your comment as someone who had a similar yet different story. I was always called the most sensitive one in my friend group. I thought all people felt the same as i did until my friends eventually told me about this when i was 14. I've always felt other people's emotions through their stories or their expressions and it kinda got heavier as time went on. Also i used to be a deep believer in god though always being skeptical of it, being a logical and rational thinker but through my mom i always believed in the existence of only one god( not pertaining to christian / muslim/ any other theology but like only one creator) . But as I matured and studied bout the universe, evolution and the natural world, I finally realised that believing in something that was not real was rather futile. This happened bout 4 years ago when i was 17 in 11th grade. This shattered my world view and the concept of god as the supreme being as told by my mom and all my family members and the society i live in. This was accelerated by "seeing of ghosts" two times that month around september i guess. Later through thorough research i found out that it was sleep paralysis. Funny that i was told it was totally me being haunted by "evil" spirits. As i realised things , i became emotionless in the inside tho i was the same person on the outside. This phase of my life was the most eventful as i learned more and more, the more the emotionless i became inside. I told this to my best friend who obviously thought i was either mad or depressed( i broke up with my first gf at the time) so i stopped sharing bout my change that i was going through. So i began to feel nothing emotionally. Then while scrolling , i found a reel on instagram of Violet Evergarden and its animation and art style attracted my attention as I love beautiful art. This was my first anime series ever, i was 18 by this time and also it was at the height of the Covid pandemic. So after asking some of my friends who watched anime, i watched Violet Evergarden for the first time. I was fascinated to watch it but i stopped at ep2 as i didnt get that attached or attracted to it . But about a month later, I started watching it and who knew how much impact it would have in my future. I cried in the 10th ep and the other eps made me realize what being a human being really meant. I started to remind myself of all the emotions i had and i swore to make myself feel like i used to before my world view got drastically changed. I cant express how much love and admiration i have for Violet and their animators and writers. Truly a masterpiece! I hope more people get to watch this anime, especially traumatised ones. Now I'm 21 and full of emotions. I watched the last movie 2 years ago and i cried for like 10 mins straight. My parents were shocked as they hadnt seen me cry in a very long time as i dont usually cry back then and still now. I havent cried in like 2 years lol. I will always be grateful and i feel priviledged to have watched such a beautiful show. I havent rewatched it as I know that i would cry myself to sleep definitely. Also I want to rewatch this with the one i love most whom i havent met yet. Violet Evergarden will always be my favorite with the utmost respect and the same excitement i had when i first watched it. AISHITERU❤

I think what people think when they say she is a mary sue is that she is OP she can fight well, spell and is a good solider. All that's true. The issue is those skills don't mean anything in a world of emotions free from the cold life in the army. Social skills are a strength as well and violet lacks that.

I see violets hands as a new begining for her. Her old hands were used to kill people. Her new hands are to help people. It also connects to her emotion disconnect of not being able to feel like other people do. In the show she rubbs things against her face because she can't feel with her hands.

Her initial depiction was what pulled me into the series. For some reason I'm drawn towards these seemingly emotionless, efficient, badass characters. They're more relaxing for me to watch, for some reason (as are anime in general, compared to life action films). I guess I do a lot of emotion hiding myself. Just that I'm an emotional wreck regardless...

Watching a bunch of reviews after the release of the new movie. This series has quickly become my favourite after watching everything through over the course of a week. From the beautiful score which is most of my top tracks on Spotify, to the frankly absurdly high quality of animation, even if the heartwrenchingly beautiful story isn't for you there's plenty to enjoy if you ask me.

I think Violets arms were supposed to be a physical manifestation of how the people viewed the "battle maiden", a cold unfeeling instrument. Or it could be something to do with her human hands ended lives and dreams and her (totally bitching) steampunk hands are uniting lives and fulfilling dreams.

episode... 4? When she goes to Iris's village, and Iris blows up at her. And Violet Apologizes, that people lying and not speaking honestly and just expecting you to understand them and say the right thing confuses her. That broke me cause it hit so close to home. I've been the person called cold and emotionless while burning up inside.

I think the reason they gave her prosthetic arms was to symbolise her new life. Throughout the show people kept bringing up how she was writing letters with the hands that took life. But they literally are not the same hands. After the war ended, her hands got a new purpose, and this is symbolised by her having different hands. These aren’t the hands of a killer, they are the hands of an auto memory doll who can convey love. Maybe I’m completely off here but that was my interpretation.

I once talked to someone who said that violet was un relatable. I simply replied that they weren’t looking at who violet is but at what she is. I explained why that is why they find it hard to relate and I then went on to break down who she is. Let’s just say, they didn’t say anything afterwards

I am so confused that some people see Violet as a Mary Sue! Her character development is great...My only gripe with the show is that I kept getting distracted by a lot of the visual/world-building elements (eg. the palm trees in snow you pointed out). Had to keep going: "No, don't obsess over that. The inconsistent costuming choices are clearly not the point!"

Yes, Violet is relatable, the show is worth watching, but... she's still a Mary Sue. All her stats are maxed (spoilers below): she - has good taste in jewellery and is sensitive to beauty - is good at math (episode 2) - already in episode 5 writes letters deciding the fate of kingdoms, and is so good in it that she instructs Cattleya (who is supposed to be the expert) what to do - easily wins Leon's heart in episode 6 and is romantic enough to cite the fragment from the comet book (excellent memory btw) - in episode 10 shows exceptional parenting skills, calming down Anne and telling her not to blame herself for her mother's illness. And she is composed enough to break only back in the office! - is assertive and brave enough to deliver letter from dying soldier in episode 11, board the train in episode 12 and not flinch after what Dietfried said to her To sum up: she seems to be able to learn everything, has great character, kind heart and is pretty. Her drawbacks come only from difficult childhood, and she easily overcomes them. OK, she has one weakness: poor acting skills (on the other hand, she has excellent poker face). If you find any other, please write in the comments.

No, fo real. This show made me cry more than any other show or movie, ever. Crazy because I literally clicked on the first episode saying to myself: "Ehh.. anime that is not full on action? I don't think I am into a drama anime. After all, drama is very humane and I don't think I can really feel that from an anime". and then... Violet Oniongarden

Whoever calls Violet an "unrelatable character" has not in the least consulted the psychological point of view. By consulting the psyche of a person raised for the sole purpose of killing, who used the mantra "kill or be killed" in order not to feel guilty for killing, and who has so many times been considered nothing more than a tool to the point that she firmly believes her itself to be, Violet is truly accurate and realistic. An inaccurate character would not have the attitude that Violet has in the beginning, in fact, they would behave as if they always had a safe home, two loving parents, zero problems and above all understands every emotion. Violet on the other hand no, because of how she was raised she takes all matters too literally and cannot understand the feelings that the people around her want to convey indirectly, and when it comes to her experiencing explicit emotions she cannot understand them and connect the names given to them to what it feels. Moreover, her "hyper-perfect" characteristics, as you said, are nothing more than an exaggeration to make fun of the Mary-sue stereotypes. The fact that Violet is described as gorgeous, strong, and that she excells in almost everything she does, is nothing but mockery: Violet doesn't accentuate the stereotype of the perfect girl who's good at everything, but she destroys it. I could still say a lot of things about everything you said in the video, but I stop at these two points, otherwise something mileage would come out.
