@@SaifKhan-gx9lf Turkiye (Devlet-i Alliye) didn't have religious freedom before Atatürk, he was the one to turn Turkiye into a secular country. Before Atatürk you could have been killed for not believing in three major religions and it would be legal. Atatürk dismantled the title of the Caliphate thus ending the Islamic rule over the Turk lands. I think you might be thinking about the fact that he forbid in political places use of hijab, faz, turban or any religious clothing. You were required to wear hats if you wanted to cover your head in a political place. This was so that people wouldn't use religion to brainwash people as one of the biggest enemies Nation of Turkiye was facing at the time was those religious leaders who were against the modernization of Turks. They were mostly people in power since before Ataturk there was sort of a caste system where religous leaders were at the top right below the Sultan and were above the law. I don't have to mention how dangerous and terrible that is. Those people rebelled once Atatürk started reforming the Turkiye to be secular because they'd lose their power and high social status. This also happened with the Tribal Chiefs and they rebelled to keep power. Atatürk, was not only fighting enemies from outside he was fighting them from inside to and to ensure Turkiye wouldn't collapse into the state they were before such radical Islamic and tribalist people had to be put in their places. If Turkiye were to be left to the hands of Hodjas and Sheiks women would have no rights, unity could never be established, would never establish a secular, scientific education system, would have no justice and so on... Atatürk never however had any problems with religions in fact he saw Turks faith as one of the factors that contributed to the liberation. After all as he said his job was made easier since the soldiers would have no fear of death and gladly execute his orders as they believed they would be risen to the glory of a martyr. His problem was with those who didn't know what they believed in and were easily manipulated when a religious leader with malicious intend used their faith as a mean to manipulate them. He paid fifty thousand from his own pocket to the Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır for the translation of Quran to Turkish language, thus sponsoring the first ever Turkish translation of the Quran. He formed the Religious Ministry of Turkey so the Turk people could learn what they believe in from a more reliable source. He had to change the constitution because well, he had to. Constitution was outdated and not fit for a modern government like Atatürk wanted Turkiye to be. Today, under the Erdoğan's regime Turkiye strays further and further from Atatürk's vision and we see how devastating the effects are. The people are manipulated under the name of Islam, the sects of Islam take over the country with corruption and bribery, religious leaders and those who have connection to them are above the law and do as they please, the tribes gain power and control over the government, overall failure in every aspect of rulership has driven the economy to the brink of collapse, corruption is common, women are not respected, people who believe anything other than Sunni Islam are opressed, some religious groups in some cities like mine Zonguldak has to live their religions in secret, lgbti people are opressed, fascist ideas has grown in popularity and so on... I hope with this you have a more clear understanding of Atatürk and how his ideals are things we need even today in Turkiye. He's not only a great general his most important is Head Teacher of Turkey. Being a teacher was his dream and he was forced to become a soldier because of conditions, however even then he came thorough and taught Turkiye lessons that forever need to be remembered.
