AV, actually Mustafa Kemal had back from to death's door in the Battle of Gallipoli. Anafartalar Group Commander Colonel Mustafa Kemal, on 10 August 1915, at 04.30, shortly after giving the order to attack with his whip in Conkbayırı, while watching the operation on the hill, a piece of shrapnel hit the right side of his chest, and he escaped an absolute death thanks to his pocket watch, which, by chance, shattered. Later, he gave the wreckage of this watch to Liman (Von Sanders) Pasha as a memory of this day. Liman Pasha also gave his own watch, which had the family crest of nobility, to Mustafa Kemal. Before that, during the 16-17 January 1912 attack in Derne, he was injured in his eye and was treated in the hospital for a month. A piece of limestone that fell from a ruin hit his face violently, leaving permanent damage to his left eye for the rest of his life. Atatürk's left eye with an asquint (slight squint) was due to this situation he had in this war.

Please don't take it personnally :) While Ottoman Empire was called "sick man" at that time, basicly a dying empire, the whole Europe was trying to get some piece of it. Italians and Greeks of course were more interested in the Mediterranian soils of the Empire, while French and British were looking for the Middle East lands of the Empire. This was unfortunately the reality of the politics of that time and Atatürk was always a very respecting commander for the enemy. He did not even let the flags of the enemy stay on the ground in the battlefield as he finds it disrespectful. He saw so many wars to know that peace is always the best option, all around the world.
