The fact that Avril wrote this song at age 14 speaks a lot how talented she is. I’ve always felt that this song is definitely her story. She really came from a small town in Canada & this was her big break to the music industry. Kelly sang tgis song really well but after hearing this version, I felt Avril’s emotion more. The rawness, her anxiety, her excitement transitioning to a bigger world ahead of her. How I wished she recorded this & included in her debut album.

I feel like after she scrapped this, she wrote Mobile. It's like the edgier version of Breakaway.

Now she released the song officially. The final version is amazing.

When I discovered Avril hadwritten this when I checked the song credits (which I always do every time I listen to a song for the first time), it made complete sense. The song had her fingerprints all over it.

Always great to see photos of Avril in the 90s. It always makes you wonder how these singers who defined an era in our culture had also lived through eras we associated with other older artists.

I like this version the best. She's got a great voice, it doesn't need a lot of post work . Just sing it.

Tell me a singer that uses this vocal technique other than Avril. You probably can't. I would say Avril is underrated, but aside from Let Go and her B-Side songs, she never did this particular technique, nor her insane voice control like in Things I'll Never Say. No other female singer can come close to her "peak" (HBG has similarities to her low voice technique, but still, not even close if you at the big picture)

It took me almost 20years to realise that Breakaway was written by Avril Lavigne. Personally I think Avril made a good choice that she sold this song to Kelly bcoz the vibe and music is totally different from her "Let go" album. Imagine that she recorded this song into her album at that time, this song will gonna be a b-side song and people would not bother to listen, then this song gonna be forgotten and not popular until now.
