WARNING: Cannons may make dogs bark, scare your mom, leave your neighbor dumbfounded, make cats panic, wake you up in the middle of the night shouting at the top of your lungs because you think you are being robbed, scare the crap out of you, and/or blow up your ears and brains; among other things...
The 1812 Overture, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1880. This version with cannons!

the first major use of bass boost/overdrive in recorded history, from what I can tell. the cannons are so loud that they create a distortion effect in the audio. he might be memed for it a bunch, but Tchaikovsky was doing what the modern producers do, long before it was considered cool, and somehow managed to be more famous than 99% of them to this day. absolute legend.

Oddly, Tchaikovsky pretty much hated this piece. He was asked to write a work commemorating the Russian defeat of Napoleon and the dedication of a related new cathedral. He reluctantly agreed, and cranked it out in about 6 weeks, and almost as a joke, made it as bombastic as possible, with timpani, cymbals, loud horns, and of course, cannon. He considered it almost a throwaway piece. Later, he was very irritated that the 1812 was one of his most popular pieces.

YES YES YES THANK YOU 😭 to me, this is the part that actually makes the cannons so significant!!! It brings me to tears it is such a well crafted segment and the shift into the beginning of it is gorgeous. The cellos furiously clearing the way before joining that lovely light violin melody, then both receiving bass support 😭 sorry I'm a nerd, vocalist with strings and piano experience lmao. I also feel it is perfect to bridge the beginning movement to the one that starts at 8:10 ish.
