A new company called Texas Aircraft is beginning volume production on a light sport aircraft called the Colt. In this AVweb video, Paul Bertorelli flight trialed the aircraft at the company's Hondo, Texas headquarters.

Good report, thanks, and it’s good that you continue to maintain the honest disclosure about how LSAs like this model can actually be more difficult and unforgiving landing in windy conditions. You have a previous good analysis of the LSA safety record in a previous video.

Good report. Like the wider cabin and heavier control pressure. On price $167K = 2 refurbed 172s Agree with Paul Coomber - more instrument close up shots during maneuvers.
@freakfly235 жыл бұрын
Not sure where you are getting your 172s or what you consider "refurbished", but I'm not finding those deals. A 172 with nice paint, low time motor, nice interior, ifr capable with a GPS, and a modern 2 axis autopilot is running well over $100k.
@rafaelsierra87335 жыл бұрын
freakfly23 My wife and I own two “refurbished” c172s. One is a C172H with a 180hp Airplains conversion, GNS430W, Stec 30, new paint and decals, and a 1978 C172N with std 160hp, GNS430W, Stec 30, new paint and decals. Total cost for each about $104K . Both have engine analyzers and were completed in 2005 and 2008 respectively.

$167K? Thats the problem with new LSA aircraft. WAAAAY too expensive. You can get a very nice Bonanza for that....with Air Conditioning! If you want to go experimental, you might as well just go experimental and get a KitFox or and RV or similar.
@bobbertee59455 жыл бұрын
Yep, if im spending that kinda money, im buying a nicely outfitted KitFox

Brandon Wright you can not compare the used Bonanza to this brand new Colt. Who is interested in a Bonanza is not interested in a Colt and the other way around. Todays production costs are not cheap and the proven product warranty is expensive too. In this segment of LSA category this pricing is normal.

Really like your reviews Paul. A bit surprised to see you attempt control of yaw at the point of stall with ailerons though! Never mind mate, good info. Now compared to the Vashon Ranger ...??

Does it have a manual trim wheel near the throttle, or is it electric only? Is the trim an aerodynamic surface, or a spring?

Can we get a video on the LSA Kitfox? Very popular STOL kit plane. Trailerable and in tail dragon or tricycle gear setup.

Seems like a decent plane albeit a little colonial for my taste but at a 167k base I'm going to gravitate towards a sleek fast eastern european bird at double speed and double range like the VL3 Evolution. Might be good for a trainer and patient pilots though.
@fingerhorn45 жыл бұрын
Yet another pleasant little aircraft but at a ridiculously expensive price. You could buy 4 Van's RV aircraft in good used condition for the same price. Who is going to buy this when there are much more accomplished alternatives?
@bryankilpatrick35995 жыл бұрын
Great review... it has great avionics, engine, parachute, interior, but still cannot fit two average 170lbs adults and full fuel, and its pricy, getting better than the c162, keep working
@tCCZebra702 жыл бұрын
Hit the mark right on the head Bryan! like the Vashon Ranger, the empty weight is simply WAY too high and the fuel tank capacity is WAY too big for a 2 place aircraft in the LSA category. The price is about 3 1/2 times the only nice 4-stroke single seat LSA (Merlin PSA) on the market. I'm sure this would be amazing on a cross country trip other than being alone as my tiny wife couldn't even be with me (6'2" 225#) due to the weight limitations. I could go with less fuel, but that violates the 3 worst things in flying (1. Runway left behind you, 2. Altitude above you, & 3. Fuel left on the ground).

I like it! However, as a factory rep, the enthusiasm level for old Umberto there just is so under the top, I have to wonder how much good he is doing for the company. Be nice to see an all electric version.

A lot of people tend to forget the 1320 is a arbitrary number these plane are built to the 1500 pound standard for the anticipated change to the LSA rule. You can fly this plane over 1320 but for check ride and legality purpose you couldn’t .
@hakan7375 жыл бұрын
I agreed with some comments. Why LSA planes are expensive to much? 167K base price for this plane. Seems like good, nice performance with rotax engine. But, Cessna 172 skyhawk list prices 190K with more powerfull engine and more avionics.Can you tell me (because I don't have any knowledge); what are the benefits if we buy a LSA plane? example; taxes, maintenace and fuel expenses, hangar or overnight fees, hourly cost?Is it worth to buy a LSA plane instead of almost the equal prices GA plane (used or new)? just curious.

A brand new 172 costs $400,000 in 2019. Some people want brand new but don't want to spend an extra $233,000. At the school where I got my flight instruction, they had a bunch of SportCruisers. Most of the owners did a leaseback with the school to cut the effective cost of ownership even more. Meanwhile it was less expensive to rent than a 172.

Like the wider cabin that fits real people. Is that sky that I'm seeing at the top aft corner of the pilot's door? If it is, I'm wondering about how much attention is being paid to fit-and-finish.
@jays20025 жыл бұрын
It is sky but the latch isn't all the way home, when compared to STBD

Not sure why anyone would pay that much for this. The Rans S-21 has better performance, wider for more comfort, and cheaper for a factory built model.

Why does everyone insist on taking full fuel? If you have the payload take it... if you don’t, take what you need to be safe. You learned to calculate fuel burn, time and distance, time to put that knowledge to use.
@markcrumblin93903 жыл бұрын
Paul you need to review your aileron in put when close to the stall way to much in this video, also agree I would prefer not looking at you lets see the instrument or something else when your flying.

looks like something Cessna did 50 years ago,...at $167,000. not much of a future at that price, IMO. That price is the reason why its cheaper to buy a good used airplane and upgrade the electronics

It’s the old game of less fuel for heavier passengers at 6 lbs per gallon. At 5 GPH your giving up 115 miles of range for 30 pounds of additional passenger or luggage
