A great AWA promo for the Winnipeg market with Bobby Heenan and Nick Bockwinkel that originally aired on CKND in Winnipeg somewhere around July/August of 1984. The AWA wrestlers did three or four weeks worth of these promos the morning after an AWA card at Winnipeg Arena. The session this promo was from was the last session Bobby Heenan did in the AWA before leaving the AWA for WWE. Rick Martel was AWA champion at the time, as they refer to. Ken Resnick is the interviewer.

Bobby Heenan believed every word he said. Best manager of all time.

Heenan & Bockwinkel were the greatest manager/wrestler pairing in the history of the buisness. These 2 were awesome together.

I loved Bockwinkel's promos. This is what a world champion should look and sound like.

Ken Resnick does a nice job of getting Nick and Bobby to express themselves.

GOOD GAWD!!! I know who Bobby Heenan is & how great he is on the mic. I also know who Nick Bockwinkel is, but I never go tto see any AWA stuff. I thought Ric Flair was the best guy on the mic, but personally I think NB's style is better. He is calm & cool at all time it seems. Which quite frankly is more villainous than the way Flair got with all his screaming & in his later days of knee dropping his suit jacket etc. God I wish I had some footage of NB.

Nick Bockwinkel had suuperb command of the English language and could wrestle circles around anybody in the ring.This was 1984 because that's when Rick Martel was AWA Champion.

Not to mention that Nick was older than the majority of the people he wrestled, and was in amazing shape all the way through.

Beau is correct. Heenan did a short tour in September of 1984 losing weasel suit matches vs. The Fabulous Ones and Blackjack Lanza before departing for the WWF. It was a rare case of someone giving Verne Gagne notice and gagne, in appreciation for how much Bobby had done for the AWA over the years, suggested they do one more tour with the Weaselsuit gimmick as a "thank you" of sorts to Bobby (plus a chance to pop the houses one more time). That 6-man match never made it to Winnipeg. Too bad.

That's no accident, Jericho grew up in Winnipeg which was an AWA city, he probably got to see a lot of Bockwinkel and his promos.

I think I saw an interview with Ken Resnick where he said that the interviews for Winnipeg TV had to be filmed in Canada. So they couldn’t do them from Minneapolis. I like when Bobby said they were jobbed. Classic.

cpthurme Why can't Roman Reigns do promos like this.
@jaybird1229
@jaybird1229 3 жыл бұрын
@@bauer444 Because Roman doesn't have the oratory skills of Nick Bockwinkle. Nick would bring inflection, satire, and variety to his promos. Roman's are one-dimensional and the same. He can do intimidation but that's it.

NO, HE DIDN'T. Hogan, Okerlund, and one other person signed in Dec. '83, but Heenan stayed in AWA until summer '84. The AWA had just started the Norberry tapings in either June or July and Heenan was only at the first one, that's it. I was there! This promo was part of 3 weeks' worth done while he was in Winnipeg for that taping and the Winnipeg Arena card the day before it. By the time of the next taping, he was in WWF.

@potomacbrave88 He had a smooth tongue. The joke about him was ask him what time it is, he'll tell you how to make a watch. A World Champion should have some gravitas. Nick had it, a guy who dresses like a street thug and pumps up his shoes doesn't, a guy who keeps repeating that he's awesome doesn't have it.

I'm stupid - landrykkb points out the obvious above about Martel - thank you - but also, Ken Resnick replaced Okerlund, as AWA fans know. Here Heenan and Bockwinkel are interviewed by Resnick. So that pinpoints it right there. Anytime you see an AWA interview with Resnick interviewing Heenan, you know it can only be from the first seven months of 1984. And I think the other person that went to WWE with Okerlund and Hogan in Dec. '83 was either Ventura or Shults.
@omarluciano8687

It was Schultz. Ventura was in the AWA until sometime in the spring of ‘84.
