In this week's video we continue probing into the ATC300 xDrive transfer case actuator for Project AWD E36 xti! We look at the motor position sensor, temperature sensor, directional sensor and more! And the best thing is we discovered some mechanical features that will make the control system implementation so much easier. Thanks for coming along for the ride, we are getting closer to having a functioning customer transfer case controller!

Great info on the actuator! I'm doing a similar xdrive swap on my e36 sedan in the spring, currently preparing by scanning everything and checking fitments in CAD. The subframe mounting looks to be actually pretty easy, front swaybar mounts swapped for e46 xdrive ones with the threaded sleeve in them, and custom rear subframe mounting brackets that bolt to the xbrace and lollipop mounting holes.

Good deal! I am using an E46 front suspension and keeping the E36 ti (E30) rearend. Using an E90 6 speed with the xDrive transfer case. Good luck!

Ive been trying to work out how to control these actuators, but i dont know how to make a controller that counts pulses. Just for your information they count pulses, the controller goes through a calibration routine everytime the ignition is turned off. I believe that it ramps the clutches to a set amps stall point of the motor from fully open a couple of times counting pulses then stores the count for next time the cars used. This is to account for wear in the plates and i guess its best at operation temp than when cold, i.e at startup. Plus its ready to go if you just start the engine put it into gear and go, there would be insufficient time to do a calibration. Ive had a breadboard hooked up with leds to watch the power feeds. One stays on dim, like half voltage and the other pulses. Off throttle the pulsing one doesnt pulse but as soon as the throttle is pressed it pulses to put the 70/30 drive back in. Quite interesting to watch. I was completely confused as i didnt think a worm drive could be back driven, so i sort of gave up there. These transfer cases known as an atc come with different numbers of clutch plates, so a atc300 has 3 plates an atc400 has 4 and so on. So i know that an x3 uses an atc400 an x5 uses an atc500, and some of the newer stuff has up to 7 plates. I think to control the motor you dont pwm it just pulse 12 volts to it and the controller needs to keep count whether its going in or out, hence the direction output. I hope this helps.

Thanks man! I am in the midst of making another video on PWMing the motor in the loop of the full transfer case system and am finding the same as what you mentioned. The PWM and transfer case actuator resistance/springback isn’t consistent enough to target a given location even under power. Going to try one more thing on PWM then shift toward full 12V and pulse feedback based control if this doesn’t pan out. Stay tuned!

Awesome work! I was just thinking about retrofitting a awd system to my e36 chassis, hope you are successful in this endeavor!

Thanks - it’s going to take a little while but I want to document it in detail to help others who also want to figure it out.

I came across your channel last year looking for Sno*Drift videos (I posted one of my own too). My wife and I went up for the first time last year. Will be taking my sons-in-law up this year. Maybe we'll see you around! One of them owns a Miata road racer and does some regional stuff (Gingerman for example). I'll never be doing any of the work you're sharing on your channel but I recognize the knowledge level and appreciate your sharing this information none the less. It's interesting.

thanks man! We won’t be up again this year, scheduling conflicts, but I hope to get it up there next year or so after the all-wheel-drive conversion! If everything works out the way I want I might actually enter it in the rally one of these years :-)
