AWE SwitchPath™ Exhaust for the VW MK7/7.5 Golf R - Install & Sound Demo (feat. Kyle & Bryce)

We've heard from quite a few of you wanting to see Kyle's very special Viper Green GTI on the channel, so we reached out to our friends at AWE Tuning to help get rid of the really pathetic sounding stock Golf R exhaust. (What was VW thinking?! This is a Golf R, not a Jetta...). With the AWE Tuning SwitchPath exhaust on the Golf R, the sound signature is completely changed and it sounds like a Golf R SHOULD sound. With the SwitchPath exhaust, you can opt for a subtle sport sound with the valves closed, then when you open the exhaust valve through the VW drive modes, you get full aggressive VW turbo glory!

Sounds great. I actually like the muted sound with the closed valves as what it should’ve sounded like stock. Then open just sounds great.

The exhaust makes a little difference in loudness but is more to refine the sound. All the loudness and power comes from replacing the downpipe. I have a full bolt on GTI with fueling and hybrid turbo and it puts down 510whp and sounds great too. With the AWD of the golf R that kind of power is even more fun.

Ex FBO R owner here. The catback gives great noise results but an aftermarket downpipe makes all the difference. Need a tune as well!

GTI doesn't have valves, unfortunately. But I went with a 3.5 in catless downpipe and AWE track cat-back, love it. Goes great with the Vortex XL turbo.

They are Vossen HF-5 in Matte Gunmetal. 19x8.5, et42. Rear are deep face, front are flat face.

1:58 okay I thought it was just my R that did this. It's super annoying. You want the exhaust to sound sporty you put it in Race mode. But you're going to have to do that every single time you start the car.

What a step back in terms of sound compared to the R32 04 and 08. The fuel mileage and performance makes sense but they should of just switched to the i5 for the mk8 to go back to the roots of the .:R.

I opted for the INVIDIA Q300 valved. It uses the existing factory valve mechanism that fits straight onto it. The Invidia q300 sounds awesome, even with valves closed sounding still nice and pleasant. Glad i bought it.

I had AWE on my Gold R. the drone was way to much. I switch to APR catback and drone is 90% gone.

I hear ya! Love the tone of the AWE if only the drone can be toned down if not eliminated especially if running an aftermarket DP like i am.

The drone is starting to tone down with more miles on her. So break in is a thing with AWE looks like. Love the throaty tone on this exhaust. Just gotta give it time!

No, it's been good. Valves open there is some drone, but that's to be expected. Valves closed is great though.

@@kylehenderson1402 Are you still on the OEM downpipe? I just installed this same CBE on my R but already had an earlier version of the AWE Catted/Resonated DP/Stage 2 and I have drone in both open and closed valves. In fact, like what you said in the vid about it sounding louder in the cabin when valves are closed I get the same. I may have to add a resonator eventually if the break in doesn't tone down the drone at a tolerable level. I love the overall sound it's just the drone is real!

@@scslite5206 yes, OEM downpipe. However, in this video I hadn’t disabled my Soundaktor and my valves were reversed (AWE sent me the right motor and fixed it). So my car had to be in race mode originally in order to close the valves. Do valves were closed, but Soundaktor was at full blast. I think that’s why it was loud that way. Now that the valves are fixed it’s much quieter with valves closed. I would prefer a “touring” version of this exhaust though if they had it I think.

I knew something was up before I clicked on the video when I saw "exhaust install" and the video was only 14 minutes long. Only thing Matt can do in 14 mins or less is polish off a box of zebra cakes. I'd still be disappointed I'm afraid! Great looking car but really terrible sound. How can they make something as awesome sounding as the mk4 r32 and go so far downhill every car after that!
