My book nerd moment is when I found a set of first editions of Lees Generals with dust covers intact and signed by the author.

Thanks guys. I only had five of the books you suggested and after your video I bought the rest. My wife wasn't thrilled but I was happy!

Definitely Grant's memoir is must reading! 😊 Not to mention his memoir is so well written it could be considered beautiful literature. And it was written after Grant had lost all his money and at the same time he knew himself to be dying. Grant wanted make sure his family was provided for. Grant printed his memoirs with Mark Twain's publication. It was an immediate success. I'd also recommend Sherman's memoirs, which isn't quite on par with Grant's, but still fascinating to read. Finally I love Shelby Foote for his literary style, and of course his history of the Civil War is worth reading for its beauty, but there wasn't an anecdote that Foote didn't love! Yet Foote doesn't provide footnotes or endnotes to any of his sources which makes it difficult to say if some of his anecdotes are anything more than mere anecdotes. Bruce Catton writes just as beautifully as Foote and is worth reading as well.

Shelby Foote by far IMO McPherson will give you the civil rights version Grant's memoirs and Sherman's wonderful reads. "Lee" by Douglas Southall Freeman Curious that Foote was lambasted for not having footnotes, but McPherson's work is heralded.....as he footnotes and references Shelby Foote

Most of these books mostly shade toward current revisionist fantasies ( Shelby Foote and Douglas Freeman being exceptions). Better books would be those by E. Merton Coulter, Michael F. Holt, Avery Craven, Tom Fleming, Ludwell H. Johnson, Tom Dilorenzo, Charles Roland, Phil Leigh....David Potter's 'The Impending Crisis' is the best book dealing with the run-up to the start of the war.

Shelby Foote is a Confederate fanboy and he's horrible on the politics, his history is military fiction.

Good book list. A Teenager’s Guide to the Civil War: A History Book for Teens gives a good overview of the war.

Wow, never heard one historian claim Shelby Footes books have problems or aren’t considered academic. Seems like a very liberal new history this channel is pushing. How sad. Shame on you guys.
