I do not own Firefly, it is the property of FOX and Joss Whedon. If I did own it, I would be eating popcorn and enjoying a sixth or seventh season of Firefly.
This is one of my favorite parts of the Firefly series, so I captured it and made it easy to find on KZfaq. Before anyone asks, this is from the tenth episode and can be watched on Hulu.com in America, and here if you can't use Hulu: www.surfthechannel.com/show/76...
Can't stop the signal.
Damn good quality too, admit it.

@@Zachomara "If you do not have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one." - JC While the Bible is quite specific about murder, with malice, without cause, etc, it is quite clear on the expectation of self defense and the possible inevitable outcomes. There is a passage about encountering a theif in your home and dealing a deadly blow in the night vs in the day. One can simply read this as killing a at night good, killing during day bad. But you have to remember the bible is all about metaphor(as the teachings of pandimentional meta-beings tend to be). 'Dark' and 'light' sway towards knowledge and ignorance. If I KNOW you have a weapon and intend to do me or mine harm I am justified in my defense of your aggression. If I KNOW you are unarmed, looking for some food so your belly stops hurting, not so much. If I DO NOT KNOW why you are skulking around my living room after forcing open my door, well... That's going to be an interesting conversation, and i suggest no sudden movements. Everything is clear in hindsight. But hindsight by its very nature is after the event occurs. And let's not forget the Bible was written by warmongers during times of intense tribalism. Do not kill yours, but those other jerks? Ice 'em. [Seriously, there's some effed up stuff done by the supposed heros of scripture, but because it was done to the not us groups its all ok....right?] This encounter is clear. Niska's guards have taken Mal and Wash, obviously intent on doing harm. For the protection of the flock the wolves will spill their blood. Disclaimer: Not a theologian/follower/theist/etc, but have spent some time and effort disecting their arguments. Im just some jerk on the Internet. Ultimately the vast majority of religions, when boiled down to their base message, convey one simple idea I feel we can all get behind: DONT BE A DICK, or god help you for I wont. ;)

I live for every moment we get a glimpse into Shepard Book's past, especially the short and understated ones. Calmly demonstrating that he's at least as good a soldier as Zoe, Mal and Jayne, and has clearly shot so many people in his life that it does not even register anymore. After all the dark shit he did and witnessed in the name of the Alliance, this is just an average day on the job for him, and Zoe looks at him and knows. No dialogue, just body language. Book's moments are so good.

Yeah we only got a few peeks into Mal's inner mind. River reading his mind: "none of it means a damn thing". The look on Mal's face in the first episode when the battle/war was lost. Then this scene. He's absolutely, resolutely determined to persevere, but his outlook on life is bleak and he's long since succumbed to despair. People wonder about why he won't admit his feelings for Inara. Partly it's because she's The Enemy: part of the power elite who took everything from him, she even supported Unification. Being with her, he would be surrendering to a power and a system that makes him boil over with rage. Partly, because he knows a relationship like that could never work. But also mostly I think because he's overcome with despair. There's no point being with Inara because there's no point being with anybody, no purpose in life, no happy ending, no hope. Just surviving and plodding on. People aren't used to seeing that kind of nihilism in a TV show protagonist. It's something they're supposed to overcome (I guess something he WOULD have overcome, eventually, if the show hadn't been cancelled). Badger says that Mal is still fighting the Unification War. Mal was going to dump Simon and River, but kept them AFTER Simon accused Mal of sucking up to the alliance by dumping them (and after it became clear how much the alliance wanted those two). I think Badger was right. Mal is still fighting the war, and while Inara is a good business partner and friend, and while he loves her, she's still on the other side. Mal will fight until he dies, no matter what, and that is his biggest strength and his greatest flaw. And that's revealed in this scene.

To be fair, maybe it was Kaylee's first firefight. In the book Black Hawk Down, a veteran US special forces operator, says that basically, in your first firefight, you spend the first ten minutes scared shitless, and that after about the ten minute mark, is when there's a change, that internally the mind starts saying things like 'how dare they shoot at me,' etc and that's when you start to fight back. It's like how my Kali instructor talks about how being punched in the nose is also kinda a wake-up call in a fight as well. Also, with Kaylee & River, River shoots three guys with her eyes closed and says 'No power in the 'verse can stop me,' that's gotta be a little creepy.

@@sarahmesser3359 I think your entirely missing the real river. She appears to be crazy on first glance, but as you continue to watch you realize she's alot more there than people give her credit for. There isn't a line that comes out of her mouth that doesn't carry meaning with it, it's just that the people around her lack the necessary knowledge to understand it. Example: "Two by two, hands of blue" It is also important to keep in mind that river is a telepath, she is literally always in the minds of the people around her. She is more aware of the situation than anyone, because everything they know, she knows. I came back to this episode after reading the Serneity official novelization. And when he said this with that tone of voice, all I could think of was the Operative's thoughts on how if Mal had been found by the Alliance as a child and molded properly, his natural talents and drive would have made him a terrifyingly effective Operative.

That seems to be the opinion and might even be cannon. If it is then whatever solar system they're inhabiting must be many dozens (hundreds) of times larger than our solar system. Between the TV series and the TV movie Serenity the crew must have visited dozens of planets capable of supporting human life without the need for space suits. All the travel times between planets was done within weeks if not days or less. It must be a very interesting solar system to say the least.
@NorthForkFisherman

@@jackbrown8052 There's a canon map that shows that this is at least a five-star system with multiple planets. What the gravitational stability of such a place would be like is pretty doubtful. I really don't think there'd be any habitable planets at all.

Looking at previous comments, cTan't just people drop this obsession about keeping everything "realistic" and just enjoy something? 🙄. To me is more important how angry Mal's expression is when the camera turns around shows that he was standing up. How the gentle Wash decided this time to pick up weapons and rescue Mal after he saw how much concerned was about making him to forget the pain and Mal's reaction when Zoe said he had to do it himself.

lol and really without aiming. A kneecap is a small enough target. Add in moving because your target it running and the level of accuracy for a Shepard is downright disconcerting. Mal : You will have to tell me that story some time... Book : No... I wont. This plus the complete change of attitude from the Alliance when Book is shot and brought onboard a cruiser for treatment hints at the possibility the Shepard has held an extremely high Alliance rank at one time (or still does). Possibly even a previous Agent.

I read online the reason the guns sound so strange is because of "chemical propulsion." is it possible for modern guns and is it like a substitute for gunpowder?
@MrShadowpanther3
@MrShadowpanther3 Жыл бұрын
Gunpowder is nothing more than chemical propulsion. There are probably any number of other chemicals you could use to create rapid high pressure, to propel a projectile. A fuel, and a built in Oxidizer is really all you need. Although it is said in the episode where Jane has to fire Vera in a vacuum that Vera needs "air around her to fire"... which typically is not the case for propellants. They come with the oxidizer built into the chemical. Thus can fire underwater, vacuum of space, wherever. I have seen people shave a bunch of Strike Anywhere match heads to get the Phosphorus Sulfide(fuel)/Potassium Chlorate (oxidizer) to pack in a reloaded shell casing. Does not provide the velocity of modern powder, but still quite effective... if inefficient. So absolutely plausible the weapons could be operating with some other propellant mixture.
