It strikes me that many of these new options are pretty useless. I'd prefer Ecamm concentrated on things like making computer power/memory use more efficient, etc

I get that... certainly I don't have a use for some of those shape effects (swirl etc...). That said 'shape overlays' has been a much requested feature and from a layout and design point of view is very useful indeed. I'm guessing that the list of effects is just pulled in from a library of effects available through Apple rather than individually coding each one. I'm personally very pleased to see the changes to the way text in Ecamm works I have felt this needed addressing for some time. We should also remember that whilst this update does bring some pretty interesting new functionality, it is just a minor 'dot' release . I know the Ken and Glen are always working on making the app more efficient in general too. Out of interest, what issues have you run into and what type of Mac are you running it on?
