I have this game and have played it. It is fun and a personal favorite. I would think a re-release of this one like they did with D-Day would be awesome.

@BoardGameNation Thanks for getting back to me! Much appreciated 😀 I'm excited to watch a Play through video on Guadalcanal, been looking everywhere for game play and can't find any videos. And yes I really enjoyed the 2023 world championship vids! I liked the breakdown of each move, the strats/thoughts behind each turn from all players. Well done, keep them coming!

For those who don't own the game, but are interested in it, there are good news: Renegade Game Studios will republish this great game next month, April 2024. It is ready for pre-ordering. And the best thing is: if you are living outside the US, they do ship the games from the EU and the UK separately. So delivery will be much faster and shipping cost cheaper if you pay attention while placing the order. This game is a clear recommendation from my part.

Unlike the Battle of the Bulge game (the one that is missing in my collection and its hard to find these days, too) I fortunately bought Guadalcanal when it was published. But it led a boring life in the shelf until last year, when I started playing it with a friend because his Global War 1936 game is too big for even a weekend and my Anniversary Edition (with an advanced set of house rules) also takes two days easily. We soon discovered that the Guadalcanal game is way more interesting if you play with the optional rule of hidden movement. However, we were not satisfied with the rules as they were suggested in the Rulebook. We plan all our ship movements in secrecy by writing them down. While you can still see all the pieces on the game board, you do not know whether they will be moved or not. To find that out, we introduced seaplanes for reconnaissance missions. Depending on the dice, the opponent has to reveal all ships that stay in a certain seazone or only certain types (like carriers) or none. Subs also get one die for reconnaissance each, but the opponent has only to reveal one ship and only on a roll of 1 or 2. After the reconnaissance was made, all air movement is planned in secrecy too. We also introduced Tac Bombers to the game. While bombers are good for attacking islands, fighters protect ships against attacking bombers. Tac Bombers (if they get through AA fire and enemy fighters) get three dice for one specific target. With these rules A&A Guadalcanal is a fantastic game. If anyone wants the rules in detail, please let me know.

Hi, Please share the rules in detailes. I like how you explained it and palyed the game.
@christophneuschaeffer74894 ай бұрын
As this rule set is a bit long, I'll share my Axis & Allies Guadalcanal Additional Rules in several posts. #1 1. Units 1.1. Tactical Bombers This extra air unit gives more punch to attacks on naval units, but also supports air and ground combat. Cost: 4; Range: 2; Air: 1, Sea: 3 (target selection), Land: 1 Limit: There is no limit to the number of Tac Bombers a player may buy for his reinforcement points. But a player can only build up to six groups of Tac Bombers and can attack up to six different sea zones and/or islands with any available number within range simultaneously. (You need six sculpts from HBG or other A&A games). Set-up: Replace one fighter against one Tac Bomber on every carrier. Thus, both Japan and the USA start with two Tactical Bombers each. Target selection: Only in naval combat Tactical Bombers can select their targets. The attacks are made after the naval attacks of other ships and aircraft of the attacker and hits have been applied according to the battle box. Damaged naval units remain in the sea zone until after the attacks of Tac Bombers. Attacks: One Tactical Bomber may only attack one specific unit with three dice. Any surviving damaged naval units are then transferred to the Base Cards. (Note: You can still use the Battle Box, but neglect the slots. Hits are applied against the chosen target) Hits against Tactical Bombers: In the neck of the Battle Box, the slots 3 and 4 as well as the slots 9 and 10 of the first row (aircraft) are assigned to tactical bombers instead of fighters. 1.2. Seaplanes This special air unit is used for scouting enemy naval movements and destroying subs. Although it has no combat value, the information gained can be crucial for deploying Fighters, Tac Bombers and Bombers. Cost: 4; Range: 4; Air: 0, Sea: 0, Land: 0 Limit: There is no limit to the number of seaplanes a player may buy for his reinforcement points. But a player can only build up to five groups of seaplanes and scout up to five different sea zones simultaneously. (You need five seaplane sculpts from HBG each. I recommend the E13A »Jake« for Japan and the PBY Catalina for the US). A player may send any number of seaplanes within range into a single sea zone in order to raise the likelihood of detecting enemy naval units. Set-up: Japan and the US start with 5 seaplanes each on their Base Cards. Reconnaissance missions: Seaplanes take off and land exclusively from Rabaul (Japan) and New Caledonia (USA) respectively. Due to their range of 4 sea zones, they can cover a large part of the map for reconnaissance missions. 1.3. Changes to Bombers In order to better reflect their real historical capabilities, Bombers have a reduced Sea Attack value of 1 (instead of 2).
@christophneuschaeffer74894 ай бұрын
#2 We changed pot shots and naval bombardments as they can become way too powerful, especially if you play with optional rules (US Good logistics can get you a dozen artillery units on one island, turning it into a kill zone). 1.4. Changes to artillery against naval units and coastal bombardment („pot shots“) Artillery gets pot shots against enemy sea units only if their island is invaded and their side controls the island. These artillery shots are rolled for at the beginning of Phase 2 (Combat), Step 5 (Unload cargo) before the transports and destroyers unload their cargo (Note: Japan can avoid this with the advantage “Quick Drop“). Every artillery unit on the island gets one die in the Battle Box - on a roll of »1« the enemy vessel is destroyed (including cargo), on a roll of »2« the vessel must withdraw and cannot land units or bombard the island. Hits in the slot for CVs are taken by transports and hits in the slot for submarines by destroyers. Because hits can only be applied to ships that either unload cargo or assist the attack with naval bombardment, no empty transports and destroyers or aircraft carriers in that sea zone can be chosen as hits. The attacker may decide that certain battleships and cruisers or transports and destroyers with cargo don’t take part in the attack - in this case they cannot fire or be hit by pot shots. In order to indicate which units don’t participate in an attack, the attacker puts them at the corner of the sea zone. Vice versa, battleships and cruisers can only bombard land units on islands if these are also attacked by land units that are already on the island and/or just being dropped off. However, battleships and cruisers still can conduct attacks on airfields - regardless whether these are also attacked by aircraft or not. If the opponent controls the island and has artillery units on it, they fire first. While battleships and cruisers can only attack one island per turn and destroyers unload only one unit, transports can carry two units or supply token and - according to the official FAQ - unload their cargo on two different islands that are adjacent to the sea zone they are in. If one of these islands is controlled by their own side and the other not, the player may first unload one cargo on the controlled island before participating in the invasion of the second island and taking the pot shot. However, if both islands are enemy controlled, the transport can be fired upon twice. In this (admittedly very rare) case, the player must indicate on which island he unloads first. If he gets hit with a »1« during the first invasion, both cargo is lost. If he gets hit with a »2« he withdraws and cannot participate in the second invasion. If he survives the first invasion, he drops off his first cargo. If he gets hit with a »1« during the second invasion, only one cargo is lost. On a »2« he withdraws with one cargo on board. 1.5. Changes to Antiaircraft Guns In order to better reflect their real historical capabilities, Antiaircraft guns have a reduced Air Attack value: on a roll of 1 they still hit an aircraft, but on a roll of 2 the aircraft only has to withdraw and cannot participate in the following Land Combat. Put a damage marker to indicate these units until they land during Phase 3 (Regroup), Step 2 (Land air units).

#3 2. Rules 2.1. Reconnaissance by seaplanes Seaplanes are sent on patrol on step 2 of the Hidden Movement sequence (-> 2.4. Phase 1: Hidden Movement). Roll one die for each unit to detect enemy naval forces. On a die roll of: 1: All enemy surface naval units that stay or move into this sea zone are detected. 2: All transports (including their cargo) that stay or move into this sea zone are detected. 3: All carriers or battleships that stay or move into this sea zone are detected. Battleships are only detected if no carriers stay or move into that sea zone. 4: All cruisers or destroyers (including their cargo) that stay or move into this sea zone are detected. Destroyers are only detected if no cruisers stay or move into that sea zone. 5: If an enemy sub stays or is moved into this sea zone, it is destroyed. No surface naval units are detected. 6: No surface naval units are detected. Roll another die! On a roll of 1 or 2: Return to base. On a roll of 3 - 6: The seaplane is lost due to bad weather, damage or enemy interception. 2.2. Reconnaissance by submarines Subs may also be used to scout enemy naval forces - but their range and view is limited compared to seaplanes. Subs have to be moved before any reconnaissance roll. Roll one die for each sub. On a die roll of: 1: One surface ship is detected. Depending on his naval movement, the opponent must reveal one vessel that stays or moves into this sea zone in the following order: a carrier, a battleship, a cruiser, a destroyer or a transport. If seaplanes already spotted this ship category, the opposing player has to reveal a ship from the next category. 2: One surface ship is detected. Depending on his naval movement, the opponent must reveal one vessel that stays or moves into this sea zone in the following order: a transport, a destroyer, a cruiser, a battleship or a carrier. If seaplanes already spotted this ship category, the opposing player has to reveal a ship from the next category. 3-6: Due to bad weather or bad luck, no naval forces are detected.

I found it in a store for $150. It’s in fair condition. Should I buy? I see renegade games is taking preorders for a new printing of the game. Does the old one still hold value?
@BoardGameNation8 ай бұрын
That is a very good question. With Renegade about to reprint it, I would wait. If you are interested in having the 100% complete collection, I would still wait. Once the reprints are available, I expect the prices on the original copies to go down. (The Hasbro printing of 1940 Pacific was selling on Amazon for $30 the other day.) So, if you want a copy for the collection and a copy to play, make the pre-order. Once you have that one, double back to the secondary market for an OG printing of the game. If you just want a copy to play with, I'd wait for the RGS printing. As with the other game, I'd expect it to be the same or better. I hope this helps! Good hunting!
