I have a question Rasta I’m fairly new and found you on insta but it’s just the confidence in your work that stuns me, how long did it take as a full service mechanic before you got that confidence behind what you do. I feel like car work is so sketchy sometimes but it’s the difference between your mechanic being confident in what he’s doing, or not, that makes you feel safe.

Great question, thanks. That safe feeling never happens unless you area person who likes the same old same old everyday. If you like growing then that takes learning. And that requires you to leave your comfort zone and there is that feeling of uncertainty right there. The thing to do is learn to get use to that feeling and use it as a compass. If it feels sketchy then you know you headed in the right direction. Sketchy means you need to read up on the job some more and maybe reach out to a more experienced person and ask the questions that make you nervous and take notes then go do. And you too will master it and then thats another skill learned. It took me 23 years and I am still nervous about stuff but thats fine.. Let’s go!

The screwdriver in the rotor slot trick is an interesting one that I might try. I'm about to replace the axles on a 982 Cayman. The Porsche service manual doesn't address the spinning shaft issue, so I wonder if the electronic parking brake drums on the 982's rear rotors are enough like you were discussing a bit in the end. Other people suggest putting the car into first gear, if it's a manual. On 982s, there's no need to remove the exhaust nor skid plate (...nor blowtorch antics), but you trade that for two stubborn ball joints per side: one on the rear trailing arm and another on the toe control arm (iirc). I bought a ball joint separator, but after taking a closer look at the joints, it's such a tight squeeze and could damage a boot/bushing, so I'm inclined to go the rubber mallet route, instead.

Happy you liked it. If your rotors are slotted it will work

@@RastamanBuilds Driver side done here. I used your trick and it worked perfectly. I wrapped the screwdriver in several layers of painter's tape to avoid any marring to the calipers. FWIW, the parking brake method does work, BUT if you want to intentionally rotate the shaft for easier access to the bolts, you'd be engaging/releasing it over and over again, so I prefer your trick. Especially since you have to go a little bit at a time so you're essentially tightening each of the 6 bolts three times.

If you can afford to yes to save some money on labo. But in reality it is not necessary. Do tires, brakes, brake lines in pairs
