_____
Ayurveda is a form of ancient Indian medicine. It strongly contrasts with western medicine as it focuses on the individual. Thus for mental illnesses, depression is contextual based on the person. There are no "cure-alls" in Ayurveda as treatment depends on the person. Dr. K explains what Ayurveda is and what gunas are.

It makes me sad that we don't spend our school years learning more about how each of our individual brains work and how we could structure our lives around it. Instead we are categorised into groups and told (indirectly) that we are not smart because some of us just dont work the same way as others do. Thank you for what you are doing Dr. K

I started learning about all of this stuff because at the end of an extensive years long delve into philosophy, psychology, and sociology, I came to one question: *"What if in a utopian society, where all barriers between humans were torn down systematically through the use of proper education, therapy, and legislation, there were psychological schisms inherent in the human condition that could not ever with any amount of external intervention be changed or bridged?"* First, I landed on Carl Jung, then MBTI, then Temperment Theory, then Enneagram, then Spiral Dynamics, and finally full circle to Buddhism and Hinduism. I find these topics fascinating and enlightening.

This video will cause a breakthrough in my life. I'm a vata (vatta?). I've learned to play piano, clarinet, oboe, and guitar, but I can't play of them now and I want to sing instead. I'm an athlete. I struggle to do one class load of homework, then do another, another, etc. I learned Latin and Spanish in college. Don't remember much of that either. I dropped out of college on top of that and have been spinning my wheels because I try to do just one thing. Thanks for teaching me that's the wrong way to approach my life.

The translation of the doshas into modern parlance using gamer terminology is so awesome. Such a good way to remember. I’m probably trying too hard to find a 1:1 mapping to tank, healer, DPS (for symmetry) though it would be really amusing if this actually makes sense and lines up: Kaphas seem like they could be healers more than tanks, or maybe something like a paladin. Known for their strengths in supporting others. Feels more like their resilience comes more from the ability to self-heal rather than “tankishness” or being big-boned. Or maybe a paladin? Pitta feels like a tank: known to be muscular, are (sometimes aggressive) leaders, yet also have the ability to set off and grind through giant mobs solo. Vata feels spot on. Massive damage in short, sometimes chaotic bursts, and then need breaks to recharge commensurate with the amount of mana used.
@richerDiLefto
@richerDiLefto Жыл бұрын
This is so unbelievably interesting and relatable, it would be so cool to read up on more of it. I’m thin, nervous, quick-tempered, and have bony little Vata hands that like to move around by themselves, but the rest of my personality is so Kapha it’s not even funny. I definitely stay in the wrong situations much longer than I should to my own detriment (I’ve only worked two jobs in my *entire life* and quitting is unthinkable no matter how bad things get). Getting me started on a task is like trying to shove a massive, rusty steel freight train down a track by hand, but once I have enough inertia, I’m hyper-focused and would stop at nothing to finish it. Same for learning something new, it’s tough at first, but once it clicks, I never forget it.

Vatas are a wide open bucket. Easy to get knowledge poured in, but it easily falls out. Pitas are a vial. Harder to get knowledge in but it retains the knowledge much easier. Kaphas are a fire hose. Hard to get started but when it goes, it's hard to stop. This is such an empowering paradigm to operate in. I'm just smiling from the fact that I'm potentially a Vata and have a decent road map moving forward. I don't need all that structure BS. That stuff holds me down.

I still struggle to understand myself because it looks like I’m a Pitta as well as a Vata (almost equal amounts). While Kapha in other aspect like in Friendships as well. But now I finally understand why when I only have 1-2 things to do it’s hard for me to motivate myself to what I have to do. But when I have at least 3-5 on my plate I feel balanced and competent even more focused. Guess I’ll have to read those papers Dr. K had shared in chat to hopefully understand more and deep dive. Randomly, diet-wise being a Pitta-Vata is so weird cause their kind opposite of each other 😂

Ayurveda is like a horoscope or fortunetelling. The three descriptions cover all most popular traits, thus everyone's can "find themselves" in those descriptions and if you realize one of your traits doesn't fit, you just say "Oh, so I have two (or three) doshas". Or we ignore the traits that don't fit to our mind's confirmation bias. Ayurveda theory of personality lacks unambiguous criteria for each dosha to begin with, thus can not be proven or debunked.
@cv799
@cv799 Жыл бұрын
I'm a little skeptical of it myself but I think stating that it has the same ambiguity as things like horoscopes is not necessarily true. Ayurveda takes psychological traits and links them genomically to physical traits. Very specific physical traits from skin type to stool and digestive tendencies are linked with psychological and social habits from sleep to temperment to relationships. This linkage between the physical and mental, on top of the studies mentioned that link it to genetics and disease are what interest me enough to give it the benefit of the doubt. Also, by virtue of ayurveda's goal and what it is, of course everyone will find themselves somewhere in the descriptions because it is meant to be three spectrums which encompass essentially every possible way an individuals human mind can "work". Like all combinations of stats a person can be born with. And by having the Vikruti questionnaire Ayurveda represents how individual events and cultural/societal location can shift and change a persons Dosha values. I think this bolsters the credibility of Ayurveda because it allows the human mind to be ever changing (psychologically, not necessarily physically) which I think both intuition and research suggest is the case. It's not like "you fall rigidly into this category so this is how you are and will continue to be, because the stars say so." Lastly, I think it could be disproven because of the specifics I mentioned before. If, for instance, it was found that people who were tested to be predominantly vata had just the same chances of getting diseases that, say, Kapha people are theorized to be prone to, that would significantly impact the integrity of Ayurveda. Or if a group who tested high in Kapha and low in Vata were equally as prone to anxious depressions as they were to melancholic depression this would also undermine Ayurvedic postulates. But let me know what you think, I'm really interested in finding out if this is the pseudoscience it feels like or not.

@@cv799 Thanks for this comment! I was feeling skeptical about all this as well but if Ayurveda medicine can help at all then it's got more of a leg to stand on IMO. Just because it's an old practice doesn't mean it's 100% right, but I guess you can also say "if it ain't broke" with Ayurveda as well. Obviously I'm split. It's fascinating, but what are the hard evidences? Why do most people seem like a weird homunculus of all three Doshas?

This makes sooo much sense!!! I am a kapha + INFP and I struggle with self-esteem issues cuz I never understood how I'm different from others and other types around me made me feel and think as if I was wrong or stupid or I'm slow to react in a negative situation or I don't really care if someone was rude and I thought I was stupid or have less emotional intelligence cuz I didn't react at the moment to this toxic person while I actually don't really care about them why should I notice and respond to every little insult or toxicity?! I never and understood that and thought I was stupid and that I didn't have enough skills to respond or maybe even notice that, but hearing that Kapha can take and tolerate negative emotions more than others made so much sense now. And as Lily said you really make us look awesome and because you explain things very well I actually believe that I'm awesome not that you just make us look awesome. Thank you for doing what you are doing and for free. I want to take sessions but I can't afford that at the moment, but until then I'll keep watching your videos and learn. Hey there, there are three books considered as primary texts in Ayurveda -Charaka Samhita, Sushruta samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam. Charaka Samhita being a text on internal medicine, Sushruta samhita - focuses more on surgical practices and principles. Ashtanga Hridayam has focus on both and it would be great for any beginners diving in. There are thousands of other classical texts, Commentaries on primary texts and textbooks being written till date. You can get many online. Hope you find this helpful 😅

Every once in a while I buy a fresh mango too and eat it within a few days of buying, they're more of a hassle because they have a huge pit inside but I feel more cleaned out than with the dried slices.

To Dr K I've watch a few of your KZfaqs, watched your mediation and trauma modules, joined your discord. I am seeking help in finding a physiatrist/phycologist or therapist who has success in helping people similar to the way you express in this video. Finding my " unique cognitive fingerprint" regarding mediation, help me deal and heal from past traumatic experiences. I'm in Australia. Thank you.

OCEAN/MBTI/Dosha I acknowledge that with the personality traits, Big5(OCEAN) and Myers Briggs(MBTI) do have some parallels but their definitions are still different: Extraversion/introversion - the same, Openness - Sensing/Intuition, Agreeableness - Feeling/Thinking, Conscientiousness - Judging/Perceiving, Neuroticism - Turbulent/Assertive. The Doshas (Wind, Fire, Earth) seems to correspond to the temperaments of MBTI to some extent: Wind = xNTx, xNFx (The rationals, idealists, nerds, techs, scientists, artists and hippies), Fire = xSxJ (The conformists, traditional path followers, hierarchy/structure orientated people, corporate workers, lawyers, bankers, rote learners etc) , Earth = xSxP (rebellious, manual, physical, go with the flow, unstructured, tradesmen, mechanics, club performers, comedians, salespeople, manual labour, gangsters etc). Obviously, the dosha body type does not determine the dosha mind right away, but I do understand that the the skinny types tend to do less physical things, are more in their heads because they feel their body less as they are colder. That is why the typical nerd are skinny. Dosha is on a spectrum and the dosha body and mind types could mix.

Eyo, been doing Typology for a while now. What it sounds like to me, at first glance anyway, is that ayurveda is a reflection of a combination of perception axes and judgment from MBTI/Socionics. So Vata Ne/Si/Ti Kapha Te Se/Ni Pitta Se/Ni/Fi
@Kaluvin
@Kaluvin 4 жыл бұрын
@@trulylegend1999 That is cool. I find typology useful when dealing with people and understanding their perspectives. I am an INTJ and all managers and leaders tend to be ESTJ(enforce conformity) and find that they don't like the non-conformist nature of some of my (social)behaviour or trying to find new ways to do things. The idea of treat others how you want to be treated doesn't work or needs to be redefined. People want to be treated according to their needs determined by their personality type. Don't use rational reasoning when someone just want results. Don't use logic or solution when someone just wants harmony or meaning. Again, people are not uniform.

I think I'm misunderstanding something because it sounds like Ayurveda first says "everyone is wholly different and unique," and then says "you can directly sort everyone's brains into one of three categories based on their body type."
@adamcummings20
@adamcummings20 Жыл бұрын
I want to understand this too. When I take the test, sure I score highly in vata, but the other questions that say I'm pitta or kapha might be more significant. Also, how much of that assessment comes from current circumstances vs fundamental personality? Maybe I'm more vata just because my attention span is fucked by social media and youtube? Maybe that's why so much of Twitch chat says they're vata.

In every type of mental test, i always am kind of evrything, vatta kapha petha and everything, i am always everything. I saw this when we had to do a kinda debate (or i created it cause i love seeing how people think) and i was able to defend my point of view but also the opposit point of view and it appeared that i can defend any point of view. I am 50% introvert and 50% extravert etc etc. So i really can take all your advices because they all work.

Responding a year later because this comment speaks to me. I am like this too. I was thinking, for me, I am a bit of a Kapha/Vatta split. Which is a little weird. I think, I have both surges of interest and energy, and then long periods of low energy. I also lose interest in things after a few weeks. But then I always come back later and do things over and over, slowly. I learn things fast and forget, but do it over and over. Both flighty and dogged. A bit big boned but naturally fairly thin despite that. I get bored quickly but can stick to a subject for years. Probably having a chronic low energy problem is due to the fact that we are treating ourselves a bit wrong and have the wrong expectations.

I'd say this is more of a Kapha issue. Kapha-Vata combination makes a ton of sense, because typically it involves zoning out and imagination (vata is a creative type).

I feel like 10 years ago I was super vata but with the initiative and resilience of having the other dosha supporting well, now my only traits are the imbalanced versions of all three with angry Kapha being the worst, in that same time I went from very lean & could eat anything without indigestion or weight gain while having the worst health habits like not sleeping, eating pure junk, chain smoking, partying frequently, etc, now (after quitting smoking, eliminating binge drinking, trying to at least be aware of nutrition/macros/etc, sleeping proper amounts, generally having better health habits) I'm straight up obese, constant digestive issues, & chronically lethargic. Nothing else has helped maybe I should check out Ayurveda before I give up completely.

So when taking the questionnaire, do we count "Temperament" as one if any of the 6 points are true, or do we count exactly how many of those 6 are true and sum these up? If it's the first I could nearly tick all boxes but if it is the latter Vata has the most points to tick so the sum alone would skew the result. I am very confused ^^

44:12 :o I accepted everything dr K was saying but there was a tiny bit of doubt in my head, until he talks about the diseases. Vatas are prone to autoimune diseases and I have an autoimune disease since 2015. For context, I consider my dominant dosha Vata and my secondary Dosha Pitta, so it was like magic when he said that.

Im 30%-60%-10%. So im mainly pitta. Funny thing is I instantly gravitate towards support roles in game such as Overwatch and Valorant, and shotcallers at that. Even more intereseting is I prefer dps over tank, in a ratio almost exactly 3 to 4. My friend who is clearly a khapa mains tank ofcourse and dps but despise support. Apart from that the rest is very vageu and can be aplied to anyone depending on what they think is cool. But the fact it actually had some sort of corelation without knowing much about it is very interesting.
