Dragonaut111 You gotta look at the bigger picture. A red card is a mistake for a defender if the red card itself leads to the demise of the team. But if a defender gets a second yellow because he stopped a potentially deadly counter attack in the 90th minute by pulling a shirt, and then his team wins, then that red card is most certainly not a mistake.

Best defender gotta be Ivanovic... when he's in position NOBODY can get through him, not even the likes of Messi and Iniesta... and when he's attacking and entering the other teams box he gives Costa and Hazard the freedom to drive in and get spaces... Best fullback in the world... his only problem is that when he goes forward, he leaves the right side vulnerable... Azpi on the other hand is solid and maybe the best 1 on 1 defender, but he rarely supports the offense and most importantly, when Terry gets caught out of position, Azpilicueta never covers up for the gap, we've seen that in the Swansea's second goal against Chelsea... Azpi made an amateur's mistake that day which led to goal, and he repeated that same mistake many other times but Chelsea were lucky not to concede....

***** Under normal circumstances, Ivanovic would be covering Cahill who plays on his side of the pitch... But in Chelsea's case, Ivanovic operates as the Right Back and the Right winger, so instead of having to cover up for someone, he needs Matic to cover up for him... So basically what's happening is that Chelsea always end up with 3 defenders at the back (Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta) + Matic who is a Defensive Mid, because Ivanovic is busy doing Willian/Schurrle's job as a right winger... Mourinho knows that Chelsea's weakness is the right wingers, thats why he has Ivanovic doing their job for them... Azpilicueta and Felipe Luis can never do what Ivanovic does...

I'm a Chelsea fan but when Cahill plays without Terry he is exposed. Azpi is 2nd to none but Terry's been consistent the past 10-15 years so I'd go for him personally!

Kompany is a liability at times. Reckless at times. Seen him getting beaten too many times to be classed as the best or one of the best centre halfs. Mertesacker is a fantastic leader at the back and has fantastic decision making. Cahill and Terry are pretty close.

Not sure if you're srs regarding Mertesacker but whatever. I wouldn't say Kompany is 'reckless' he just isn't a modern day defender, he doesn't sit off people and drop deep, he engages with the man of the ball, just a different style of defending and he gets it right more times than not. You've also got to remember that Kompany plays for City, where their 2 midfielders, especially Fernandinho/Toure have virtually no intention of defending, Pelligrini plays open attacking football, meaning the back four have to work much harder and cover much more ground, where as Chelsea, they defend as a team, how many times do teams get in between Chelseas midfield and defense? very rarely! Meaning terry/cahil have much more protection. If Kompany played for Chelsea, he would look even better

People forget that Chelsea's defence is excellent because they WORK AS A TEAM. Mourinho is a defence specialist, he always gets his defenders to work hard on defending together. The defenders themselves are not exceptional (par maybe Terry but really he is past his best), they just are trained very well and so is the rest of the team in covering the back 4. In terms of individual defenders, Kompany is undisputedly the best defender, his ability is above the others in the PL.

TheDevilsMessenger4 He is perhaps the most disciplined. Kompany has a better defensive ability - this is clear, he tackles harder, is stronger, quick, can win headers etc. He may not be as consistent as Azpilicueta but without a shadow of a doubt he is a more gifted player.

Honorable mention Laurent Koscielny. Much improved this season and doesn't benefit from great protection from midfield (no Diaby, Ramsey and Wilshere decent but not on same level defensively as Matic/Ramires and Fernandinho/Fernando. Great pace and good in the air.

Kompany is the most over-rated player in World football. He's a good defender but not world-class like people make him out to be. I admire him as a player he works hard, is a great leader and very well-spoken if you've seen him in any interviews. But he makes so many mistakes, more than any other top tier CB. People think that just cause he's rated highly on FIFA and he's the champions captain that makes him one of the best in the world. It doesn't, he's nowhere near the level of Ramos, Silva, Godin and Hummels. Even in the PL i think Kosielny and Terry and both better.

For the amount of mistakes he makes, not a chance. Physically he's immaculate, and his positioning awareness is right at the top, but he gets caught out way too easily in certain situations and his marking is very suspect.

Stop playing FIFA, watch the games. Cahill-Ivanovic-Koscielny-Terry-Coleman(Fullback)-Mertesacker, hell even Demichelis are all better than him in center. Kompany had 1 good season when City won the league. Now if you're a good dribbler, its easy to bypass him, Kompany makes mistakes compared to the others

Please don't even talk about Mertesacker or Demichellis in the same sentence as these two. Terry and Kompany are of a different level. Kompany is awesome, but not as good as Terry. And Terry is older and still performs his best in every game of the season. You can see inconsistency in Kompany by LARGE variations when he plays. Terry on his worst day, is still amazing.

Many people here talking about Kompany. I think with the amount of experience these two EX-DEFENDERS have beats yours by a 1000 miles, so let's just listen to them. They're both unbiased, and they ALWAYS make a good point. They're not saying Kompany isn't great, but the number of mistakes he makes, compapred to others at Chelsea is a lot more. For example, on their worst days, Terry and Cahill are still pretty good. On their best, unbeatable. Azpilicueta barring that one mis-timed tackle this season, has been flawless... FLAWLESS. You look at Kompany (not just this season, even the last two) He does things defenders shouldn't do....

I really don't know what to make of football anymore. ivanovic is without doubt the best fullback in the league then comes probably zabaleta. He slipped and Altidore stepped on his foot rather than the other way round. Wasn't a pen. Red card v Palace was a bad tackle and deserved but it's like the only bad thing he's done in the league.

Coming from a Chelsea fans point of view I would still say Kompany was the better all round defender. But he does have mistakes in his locker. As for Azpilicueta you rarely see him make mistakes, only Premier League mistake I recall is the red card against Crystal Palace a few weeks ago. Poor tackle and deserved the red.

Azpilicueta doesn't make mistakes? He got sent off against Palace a few weeks ago with an awful tackle. Don't get me wrong, I think he's pretty decent but I reckon Laurent Koscielny, Vincent Kompany and Nathaniel Clyne are one of the best defenders in the league at this present moment.

Of course, your Kompany's Terry's etc are regarded as the best because they've won more trophies as captains, but Koscielny is real unsung hero. He's one of our best players. Without him, our defence would be crap.
