What a fantastic outcome, you're truly a master of your trade. So happy you're sharing it with us here.

This shuttle looks great. Totally agree that Tamiya white, either gloss of flat, lacks in the coverage. Tamiya does make a white primer with rattle can or in the bottle and it does cover well.

As usual Lou, a great job! I have a question for everyone about the aesthetics. Obviously this was designed in the 1960's and so has that general look. But does anyone else hear the theme from Space Ghost when you look at it?

I actually love this shuttle and wish it had been the standard shuttle for the show. At the very least it would have made a great captain's yacht.

"Be good to those around you. it'll confuse them." Indeed. I see a couple of hiccups, but no carrier film so I call that a big win. Helluva interesting build, not just from the home-brewed aspect but your toiling over it. I confess, I impulsively dug out my mini-dome vacuum former and tried to make some domes--- been a long time. What I'd forgotten was that thinner plastic is harder to control than thicker. AND I seem to be out of thicker-- could not find even small stashes of it. Been a long time, like I say. And failed, by the way. Lost my touch. In the end-- or the very front (heh heh)-- nothing is as sweet as glass! Plus that dome with fiberfill looked great on camera-- a searing ball of energy, barely contained. A good look. The interior is very evocative of what might have been. On the other hand, one can kind'a see why they built the Galileo 7 the way they did. One can only speculate what AMT spent on that original but this design would have been up near a million 1964 dollars. Plus there's an innocent charm from back in the day-- comparing the overall Enterprise design when compared to the blocky shuttle. Ah well, this entry will set the tongues wagging at Wonderfest! I smell GOLD! But something between now and then-- Lou, perhaps you can find a laurel to lay upon. Unless you've got a Snap-Tite lying around, I'd just relax. You've earned it.

Fantastic build. The glass domes are excellent! As an alien encountering this vehicle for the first time, I'd think that the USS Enterprise was smaller than I had imagined

Hey Lou, what a great build just to add to all the owther great comments. This early concept version of the Shuttle was so fascinating when I saw it many years ago. Seeing an acual modle of it is really something. Your work really speaks for itself and athe tips on building are so helpful. They keep reminding me us common folks can produce a nice finished model when just taking the time to do things well with pateince . And to enjoy the build along the way. Adding to spacedock873's great comment about diffusing the nacelle lighing,. I found a trick taking a section of acrylic rod and lightly sanding one end that would sit against the clear dome with the LED at the other unsanded end. This can create a really even diffused lighting effect. Another version of this trick is to take a section of the rod and lightly sand the entire surface and place an LED in a hole drilled in the center of the rod. This creates a great even glowing effect all along the rod. I used a variataion of this trick by heating and bending a section of 3/8" or 1/2" daim. acrylic rod around the aft engine section of the 1/64 LOG Sprindrift model. The glow through holes drilled in the engine grills was great. But this is just my small suggestion from a model building novice.

There are many of us out here in model land that have a strong dislike for Tamiya Flat White. I find it to be almost totally useless. The shuttle looks awesome!!
@vengeance1701Ай бұрын
I do think it's a nice looking model, BUT I think the blocky, utilitarian style of the shuttle we ended up with fit the aesthetic more.
@aztekdummyАй бұрын
it was certainly cheaper to build

Hi Lou. Well done in getting such a good result after all the issues. Unfortunately I think 3D printing is still in the "garage kit" quality bracket in as much as you have to have an extra skill set and put in a lot of extra work to get a good result versus a commercial styrene kit. If you are this kind of person with the necessary patience (as you are) then you can produce a unique piece. Regarding the nacelle lighting, I have found that setting the LED further back in the tube and putting a piece of diffuser panel at the back of the dome helps to spread the light more evenly. From the miniature figure painting fraternity I have found that the consensus is that the best white paint is Pro Acryl Bold Titanium White. It is smooth rather than chalky and covers extremely well. I have found it to be excellent so maybe it is something to add to your arsenal. Try not to get too stressed in the next couple of weeks 🙂👍
@aztekdummyАй бұрын
it's a long way from touching the quality of a good styrene kit, for sure...BUT if the choice is printing a kit or never seeing it released in styrene, you'd be a fool to wait forever.

Great work as always. I think you mentioned once that this design would not have been possible to use on the series for practical reasons. It's a shame, because it's a beautiful concept.
