Good on Sophia to cover the inappropriate questions.... now depending on your industry, if you are fully confident about your skills & experience, don't be afraid to flat out ask the hiring manager: "what can your company do or offer that promotes a healthy work-life balance?" - let's not forget, we are in Canada.... we all deserve a decent work-life balance especially if you got small kids at home!! Times have changed.... companies nowadays are struggling to find decent employees compared to 20 yrs ago.... the talent pool now is not as strong so good luck everyone!! ^^

Very good stuff, Sophia!! I think most new immigrants from HK can benefit from your tips.... I was fortunate enough to have come over as a kid so I am quite familiar with the culture/mentality here. I feel that the job market has gotten a lot better than say, early 2000s where 50-100 qualified applicants were fighting over ONE job posting. Nowadays, it's very challenging to recruit the right fit, meaning either most of us are happy with our jobs and/or the competition has gone down quite a bit!! My humble advice to my fellow HKer's here is, think long & hard if you can fit into the company's culture.... don't just think of grabbing ANY job for experience. Otherwise, it'll cause so much unncessary stress in the long run!!

Very good tips. I interviewed a girl, she mentioned to me that she speak multi language including French. Then I started talking to her in French and tell her to reply in French, she couldn't. She said she can understand what i said, but she cannot reply my question in French. She then explained that her French level is only as a small child when her grand ma spoke to her in French and she haven't use it since then. For me, it was a very bad impression that she is overqualified herself for a skill that she doesn't have.

yup! typical!! as a hiring manager myself, I do feel that the millenials these days love to hype up their own profile and expect us to think more highly of their potential.... and usually it just backfires because they were only desperate to upsell themselves.... and what's worse is, they seem to be more interested in what the company can do for them!

I went interview for a job over 10 years ago and drove 5 hours to another city and stayed one night hotel before. The interview was very basic and only last 10 minutes, i didn't get hire and lost my gas + hotel money. The job was referred by a job agency, I told them I wasn't impress that they ask a candidate to interview for 10 minutes knowing the candidate come from a different city, the recruiter just apologized and sent the feedback to the hiring company. I was a fresh grad back then so I was despite to find a job and not knowing to negotiate the commute and hotel cost or reimbursement. Today, a lot of interview are done by Video Calls.

To be fair it's quite basic preparations that is definitely not going to be enough to earn a job in a employer's market like Canada 🤐

Well... I've been here for ages and still appreciate Sophia's tips... you would think that she's just covering common sense but even a lot of locals don't exercise common sense in job interviews!! And to clarify, it is no longer an employer's market now!! Most companies find it extremely challenging now to recruit staff that are good long term fit!!
