The final form in the Wing Chun system. The "8-cut blades" or Baat Jaam Dou. These knives have been called many things, including hudiedao/wu dip dou, mother-child/mother-son knives, hung sing butterfly knives, among others. The knives are peculiar to Southern Chinese martial arts, but not by any means exclusive to Wing Chun.
The term Baat Jaam Dou may refer to the form more than the knives. Over time, the knives changed from stabbing-oriented to cutting-oriented, for several reasons. The term "baat" 八 is literally the number 8, but also means "all around, all sides" and in the context of the art of these knives may refer to how they can cut from all angles, and not necessarily specific cuts performed. The term "jaam" 斬 means to cut, chop or sever. Pretty cut and dry, but we do include thrusts as well. The final term, "dou" 刀 doesn't mean knife or sword, but refers to a category of blade construction typified by a single edge and thicker spine. This term is applied to sabers, knives, and even polearms. For our purposes, knife is sufficient, if a bit inaccurate.
八Baat: number eight, all around, all sides
斬Jaam: cut, chop, sever
刀Dou: knife, single edged blade

Author, thanks for the research work done, very good and informative video. Enjoyed watching it. The only thing I noticed is that perhaps in your school the emphasis is not so much on the stand, but on other actions. But this is taste, features. So, the first version of the tao, the only thing, I don’t know which branch of Wing Chun, but the second one is known to me, the third one was shown by Ip Chun himself, the fourth one by Wing Chun Renegades. Augustine Fong, Stephen Chan, and William Cheung have significantly different Tao. Do you have similar information on Tao with the Dragon Pole? As far as I know, they are more radically different. Thanks again!

I don't have as much info on the pole. Most people do not share it. I have had a lot of trouble researching it.

But over all good work I like the way you combined the 8 direction work. I have been playing with putting the crossed swords high and low and side to side with the swords pointing towards each other on the 45s to make a pakua diagram around the 8 directions.

Why follow the same B.S. you were speculative about with your own self-doubt? Honestly your weapons aren't fit to your physical potential! All I see here in this video is more mindless practice.....!

@@jay31san Not nessasary, this isn't about form. The question you should be asking is, if its applicable to the principles of the parallel sword system?

That hanging gan sau is awful. I see it in alot of sets and its just horrible. No structural integrity.

There is the example of what I was saying. The outward blade on the tan sau is bad because you are parrying the opponents blade or arm with the blade instead of the back of the knife. Along with that I showed why in the other video because your kinda moving from side to side so the blade would be forward when moving across the body and pointing upward on top or forward. The blade follows forward pressure when you turn it to the outside like gan sau yhave to turn it back inward for the change and if it is pointing inward your hand rotation is outward instead of inward. Which is if you look at the end of the bong lap da drill when I do the complex trap that done on each side draws the yin yang and if your rotation is inward it doesn't follow the rule to make the diagram. Although I'm still studying perhaps you could post a vid on what the application for that movement is and link it so I might have a better understanding of why its there.

I appreciate the thoughtful reply. Are you referring to the move in the first section of the form? Maybe I misunderstood which move you were referring to. In section 1 we don't have either either gang sau our taan. We trap and hyun, which is admittedly tenuous at best. The form sequence is more or less Ip Ching's, and he certainly never got into a knife fight in his life. This is some of the kind of stuff I talked about in the "knife form nonsense" follow up video I posted ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e-BzdJaZ2MjTnZc.html ). Other than just wanting to play with swords, this is why I got into HEMA. To work on historical weapons combat. I have come to look at our knives as parrying daggers, and If I were to create a new knife form from scratch, I would do things quite differently. As it is, I'm trying to uphold something of the tradition out of respect. I will look at doing some application recordings when I can it it in my schedule. Until then, here is Sigung Kwok demoing the basic application (around 40 seconds): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nM6HoduZxrLKZHk.html
