Babi Yar was one of the greatest crimes of WWII. The Germans determined to 'sanitise' the site of the massacre by destroying all the buried bodies. For the concentration camp inmates forced to do this grim work, they faced a choice between being killed by the SS or staging a mass breakout in the hope that some could survive. This is their story.

My dad was an eyewitness to the round up leading to the original massacre. He was an 11 year old boy at the time. The memory haunted him for over sixty years. He recounted what he saw to me shortly before he died. He wasn't included in the round up because a German noncom assumed he was Volksdeutsch since he could speak German and told him to get out because no kid should see what they were doing.

Eleven years old and a witness to such horror. May your father RIP. I had 10 great aunts executed this way outside Minsk, todays Belarus. My stepfather survived Sachenhausen outside Berlin, and my great uncle a labor camp at Auschwitz. It took me years to get bits and pieces of stories out of them as a boy back in the 1960s.

I am of Belgian heritage and heard horror stories witnessed by my family in World War I and II. No horrors from Germans surprise me. I ended up marrying a Filipina and felt an odd kinship with Filipinos who keep alive similar horrors they experienced from the Japanese. Difficult time of human history. All we can do is tell these stories to our children and work for a better future.

Thank you Dr. Felton. I had the great opportunity during my career to work for 7 years in Ukraine. Where I met my beautiful wife, now a naturalized US Citizen. I have had the opportunity to visit Babi Yar ravine and many other memorials in the former Soviet Union. The slaughters at Babi Yar continued beyond the infamous slaughter in 1941. Though not to the degree they were in Sept., 1941. They ended only in late 1943, as the Red Army arrived to liberate Kiev. The Memorial of Glory in my wife's hometown of Kharkov (Kharkiv) honors 274,000 residents of that city, which was fought over three times, killed in the war. A beautiful park built on what is actually a mass grave. More people killed in ONE city than all Americans killed in the European Theater. Throughout other Ukrainian cities...Donetsk, Odessa, Sevastopol, Dnipropetrovsk (now Dniepro), Poltava and many more cities and villages...there are memorials to women and children murdered. You don't see these things in American parks, our population has been spared such horror. When the war was over, nearly 25% of the population had been exterminated, roughly half the men between the age 17-45. Not a family escaped without one or more members being killed. Though few veterans are left now, when I worked there, not long after the Soviet Union broke up, there were still many. They wore their decorations on their civilian clothes. When a veteran, man or woman, entered a bus or subway or tram, the others would offer their seat and say "Thank you for our freedom" or "Thank you for our happiness". If they were standing in a line, they would be offered to go ahead to the front. These are not easy places to visit. I would suggest any American who has the chance to do so.

@@tadghosullivan I know it is unkown by many people. It was unkown to me for many years and I have read extensively about WWII and the atrocities that took place. We know that there were attempts for it to be covered up by Wilhelm Koppe at the end of war and it wasn't until Yevtushenko's poem in the early '60s that shed light on the fact that were no monuments to what took place. Why was this allowed to happen? I appreciate that every massacre and attorocity cannot and maybe should not be commemorated but I feel that the magnitude of what took place at Babi Yar is exceptional in its barbarity, hatred and intolerance.

SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich Jeckeln was the Higher SS and Police Leader of Southern Russia during this atrocity. @@nikolaykrotov8673 Your pro-Stalinist/Putinist/Kremlin propaganda (partly from the St. Petersburg troll factory) is both completely derogatory and absolutely false. Why? There are two primary reasons, including a) Shortly after Putin assumed power, his regime resumed the old Stalinist lie of accusing his enemies (and Ukraine in particular) of committing some dastardly crime (such as being fascists) whereas in truth, Putin's regime had already committed this crime and was trying to deflect this crime by falsely accusing another country of this same crime which has always been complete and utter rubbish. b) Ever since Ukraine regained its independence in 1991, every Ukrainian Government has been both anti-fascist and anti-communist. And, most unfortunately, and I say this with great sadness for the sake of the Russian people and the multitude of Russia's minorities, the same has not been true with Putin's imperialistic, kleptocratic, tyrannical undemocratic and neo-fascist regime whose ultimate goal is to resurrect an old-styled Russian Empire. However, try as he might, the genie (AKA Ukraine in particular) has escaped its bottle and no amount of force will voluntarily make it return to the age of darkness. AMEN!

Katyn story was revealed by Germans during Nuremberg trials. Soviets used to blamed it on the Germans. That story was always kept a secret. Russians finally admitted to it after the fall of Berlin Wall. The allies were not happy about the discovery as well. They loved Uncle Stalin so much that they let him go all the way to Berlin and keep the whole Eastern Europe. Roosevelt was a commie and a traitor.

When I joined the Railways in Victoria Australia as a boy in 1977 I worked with guys that had come out of post war Europe , they came from everywhere , Ukraine , Latvia , Russia , Italy , Germany ,Hungary , Poland, Serbia, you name it ! I heard some pretty extraordinary stories . Its a shame that my knowledge about the events of the time were not as extensive as they are now , In hindsight I should have asked more and learned more from those guys who lived through so much history and turmoil of life . For the most part they were great workmates , friendly and humorous . Much of what they went through I am sure they kept to themselves but I have to say there was a comradeship as Railwaymen that seemed to mitigate the fact that in many cases they were from very opposing sides not that long beforehand.
