While in Eritrea I took this shot of a mob of baboons on the road. at one point in the video rocks can be heard falling from the mountain onto the roof of the bus, would welcome comments on what type of baboons they are. The driver of the bus threw food to them.

Eritrea fought and suffered for its independence. It is now time for Etiopia and Eritrea to try and normalise relations and work for a future of cooperation. I was in Eritrea in 1997 and was impressed by the tolerance shown there between Christians and Muslims. It can be done, both countries have a common history in a lot of ways, move forward in peace and tolerance.

Did you know that when the Railway was built from Asmara to Massawa, baboons were fed with Cactus which they then spread all over the mountainous area and this helped to prevent rocks from falling on to railway?

Did you know that it was the 'Babbons' that helped stablise the Road and Railway system in Eritrea? In the 30s when the Italians were building these roads in their advance towards Ethiopia, in order to prevent rock falls, they fed these babbons with 'prickly pear'. Babbons then helped to dissipate the seeds which grew into cacti which held rocks together. The Prickly Pear or 'Fico d'India' as it was known was also the stable diet to poor peasants.

A group of baboons isn't usually called a clan, it's called a troop or a congress. "A congress of baboons" is my personal favorite. The females are the smaller reddish-brown baboons which you can sometimes see (At :21, :31 for example) carrying young on their backs.

The basic group of the hamadryas baboon consists of one male with 2-11 females; a unimale group, essentially a harem system . These groups come together to form troops of up to 750 individuals to sleep on outcroppings of rocks at night. During the day these large troops break up into smaller groups of 20 to 70 individuals made up of two or more unimale groups. These are foraging groups that stay together while they forage. Two or three unimale groups will come together to form what A CLAN

Thank you for the excellent video! We saw these species Papio hamadryas (their scientific name in Latin) in Berlin Zoo and now it's nice to visualize their natural habitat. They looked very happy in the Zoo, and here too :) It is amazing that this semi-arid terrain can support such a large population, meaning there is enough food for them in the region. Supposedly they are not very choosy with food. It is also clear that such a huge herd can be extremely dangerous. These look frightful, though - maybe they know firearms, etc. They know to be afraid of humans. Amazing animals, very intelligent!

People feed them a lot when going from Asmara to Massawa, two large cities in eritrea. Nowadays though it's heavily discouraged because they don't want the baboons don't lose their hunting skills and instead become to reliant of food aid from tourists, but yes baboons are very smart. If you go to the gash barka region of Eritrea the baboons work together with the elephants to survive. The elephants would digg watering holes for the baboons and in exchange the baboons would warn them about any predators nearby.
