We did the first bath at home after coming home from the hospital. And then we did sponge baths until the umbilical cord fell off. We wrapped her in a muslin swaddle and then just unwrapped the body part we needed to wash then wrapped her back up. She was so relaxed and cozy for her first bath, it wasn't traumatic for her or us.

Thank you! Our first was bathed right away at the hospital and with our second we waited a week for even a sponge bath. The first one had terrible eczema and the 2nd has much healthier skin so far (6 weeks). Really appreciate your videos! They helped me labor at home and deliver quickly without an epidural!

In Germany we wait until the umbilical cord falls off. So normally the first bath is at home with the midwife that visits baby and mom after birth. It is so strange to me, that many bathe their babys so early and even let strangers do it in the hospital.

In the US, we normally don't get medical professionals visit in the home. The first bath here is not a submerged bath, it's more of a wiping off with soap and water.

Yeah I'm from Spain and hospital baths are not a thing at the vast majority of hospitals. In our childbirth classes they said a week is fine, just wipe them well if they get poop or puke all over themselves but no rush to bathe them.

I think it was Day 3 when we bathed our son (we were in the hospital for a longer time because of baby’s jaundice). The nurse mostly did it, and she did a very light, quick bath-it wasn’t like a good scrubbing or anything lol. A good bath tip for at home is to run the hot shower for a few minutes to heat up the bathroom so they’re not so cold going in/coming out-even doing that and really trying to keep him warm throughout the drying off process, I find my baby’s hands are cold for a long time after a bath 😞

I have two kids - a 2 year old and a 2 month old - and we (myself and my husband) weren’t the ones to give them their baths in the hospital. We weren’t even offered to. In fact, when my son was born they took him out of the room for his bath and we didn’t even get to watch. 😢 With my daughter they bathed her in the postpartum room we were in so we at least got to watch that time! But I think that was due to Covid honestly. Both times they never waited 24 hours. I think it was more the 6 hours mark. This was so interesting to watch. I’ve learned so much!

I had my baby 4/15 and I told the nurses do not bathe my baby. They gave a little push back but they did follow my request. The only thing they did was wipe down the head to make sure there weren’t any abrasions from birth (which is understandable) I won’t be bathing baby until his umbilical cord falls off.

We waited till we were back home and our post partum midwife suggested doing it. Since our little one took a detour to the NICU from day 3-7. So he was about 9-10 days old I think. He didn't like baths at all so we mostly stuck to simply washing with a washcloth for quite some time. I'm not sure but from what I heard most people do it the first time with their post partum midwife here (Germany) and not in the hospital.

My SO is step-dad to my two now older kids, this coming baby is his first (and no experience with newborns). I told him besides the hospital cleaning them up when they're brand new, it's going to be a minute before you bathe them at home. I explained you're already keeping them wiped and changed, and I said you don't get their forming belly button spot wet, you're always keeping it clean and dry with little alcohol pads until it is totally crispy and falls off and *then* you can bathe them in the sense of using a tub and baby shampoo. But he likes to shower twice a day and make sure stuff around the house is wiped down, and is sure I'm wrong. *(Sigh.)*

In my hospital after 2 hrs recovering in the delivery room, they bring us upstairs to the postpartum ward. At that time we drop off our baby at the nursery for warming and a bath. Ans they bring the baby back about 2 hours later. I hear this has changed due to covid (will find out in a few weeks when I have #5) but I've never had the option to bathe baby in the hospital.

My first was in the NICU so I have no idea when the first bath was. I did stay last one night to give him a bath. My second they said they needed to take her as soon as I got to my room for tests and asked if they could give her a bath when they knew she already had a dip in temperature. I said no to the bath but let them take her. I should have said no to them taking her too and spent another hour with her because I was wide awake at that time. When they brought her back hours later, they said her temperature dipped again so they had her under a warmer. I did skin to skin most of the time I was in the hospital with her just to make sure that her temperature stayed up. I had them take her and give her a bath under the warmer then bring her back so I could do more skin to skin. I think it was around 12 hours after birth.

Basically, it doesn’t matter when you give them their first bath, but just know that they will smell bad and possibly get a yeast infection in the skin folds. It’s best to wash as soon as possible.

Nah. I don't know the science, but my first in a tub was born in very warm water, no soaps, and came right out of it to be on my chest. She wasn't all rubbed down to get anything off of her, just wrapped up to dry and kept warm. She definitely was covered in her little downy baby hair and white stickiness the whole time even then.

She also dumped my colostrum that I pumped for 45 minutes down the drain. She said there wasn’t enough, even though the nurse before her helped me feed the first pump to him. She also told me on the last day, “I guess we have to supplement with formula because he’s not latching.” He never latched in the hospital but she made me feel awful the whole time I was there.
