Mine came in cold on the morning of the 4th day. It's been awful. Of 24 chicks 20 have died. But thanks for this, at least I see I did exactly what I was supposed to. It's been awful and I've felt so much guilt

Oh no I am so sorry this happened to you. What a traumatic awful experience, I know it can’t replace the pain and grief you and the chicks have gone through, but I would call the hatchery and let them know they will most likely refund you. This wasn’t your fault so please don’t feel guilty. I’m so sorry the poor little chicks had to suffer it was most likely the post office fault. Please don’t let this bad experiences get you too down and just focus on giving the chicks you have the best life. I’m happy that some survived, maybe offer them some hard boiled egg yolk or syringe some raw egg yolk mixed with electrolytes water and a vitamin supplement like poultry cell or nutridrench to help them recover. That and the heat will help them. When syringing an eye dropper works very well and just put a dot on their beak and it will pool in their mouth and swallow and this way they won’t aspirate or choke. Just one little drop at a time slowly. So sorry again

Just ordered 10 more black australorps that should be here next week. It's been a few years since we've had any babies so I'm refreshing my knowledge. I ordered a straight run this time and hoping to get some roosters so I can just breed my own from now on. I've had 10 hens from years past,but they're laying is slowing down some. I guess after I raise these new ones up some I'll enjoy some chicken dinners.

@@BockBockBouquet Thanks! They’re all doing great! I picked up my little tweeting box at a post office that shares an entryway to a federal building. It was funny to watch the armed guards go from bored spectators to perplexed confusion and then to a bunch of little boys cooing and waving their fingers at the air holes. Chicks make everyone happy!

Plastic tubs, especially with heat lamps, can be really dangerous for people new to the scene. Your babies seem so happy! Love to see some baby Polish in there🥰🥰

Very true! If too close they can melt them 😬 The heat lamps have many dangers, we still use them but the radiant heaters, brooding plates and pads are much safer options. Thank you! We love the little poof ball heads Polish and silkie chicks have 😊 These ladies are all grown up now and lay eggs of their own. Time flies!

Hello, I have a couple questions? I'm new at raising chick babies, I got 6 chicks and 3 keets 4 days ago and have lost 3 chicks and 1 keet. my others seem fine, we have a heating plate and its set at 96 degrees. My brooder is out in the metal shed, it's a big shed like a pole barn and it's insulted so the inside temp of at night gets down to like 70 degrees and up to maybe 80 degrees during the day. I do have a light shining down on them, I stayed with a white light and it stayed around 85 to 90 degrees in the brooder box during the day and 70 at night. The baby chicks are staying under the heating plate to sleep. I know the lady at Tractor Supply told me that sometimes they just go through so much they don't make it and I get that, but it's still heart wrenching when you try so hard to keep them alive and they pass. So my question is, if I have the heating plate and they use it, what temp should I try and keep the rest of the brooder box they run around in? During the day their run around like crazy eating, drinking and sleeping and as of yet no pasty butt. Also, I've seen videos that show using a reptile heating bulb is good to use cause there's not a constant light shining on them and there's a natural day night rhythm, is that true, that baby chicks need it dark at night? And one last question, How old should my baby chicks be when I start giving them treats:

Thank you guys so much! Raising chicks is the cutest thing, it so hard to walk away from the brooder lol. We also have an upcoming video on when we got our ducklings in the mail, but that video will show them grow from day one, to fully grown. These were from mypetchicken hatchery. Day old chicks. Pullets would seem too much stress for shipping in my opinion but some places do. I would search locally to avoid shipping

I plan to use chicken nipples in the coop. Do you think it would be ok to start out with them? Introduce their break to the nipple instead of a bowl? I just ordered some chicks.

I bought the probiotics and the electrolytes. The chicks are scheduled to arrive in a few days. Do you do electrolytes on day one and probiotics on day two, or do you do do many days of one and then do many days of the other?

On the first day I would put both in there, make sure you make fresh daily as they lose their effectiveness with time once mixed. You can do the electrolytes the first few days then switch to only probiotics the second half of week, then switch back to electrolytes. Some days during their second week of life just offer plain water because they do need a break from the electrolytes as well. It’s very important for their first days as shipping stress is a lot on them and they are without food and water for so long they can arrive very weak sometimes

Just in case there is any that pass away or have illness it’s best to get more than 2 so you’re not left with just 1, as they need a flock or buddy. They are not solitary animals. At least do 3 to be safe
