What an incredible work of the nature filmmakers. This incredible shot of the flying goose from below with all those hard hits, the reaction of the parents filmed in close up, the other cameraman right at the start of the jump on the cliff and then the reunion of the family. This must have taken an incredible amount of patience to be able to film this at the exact right time. They probably waited for this moment for years to catch it. I guess the BBC payed them good for this incredible and very emotional and heart wrenching document.

@@sapling6536 that is precisely why it's incredible that they managed to capture it. Because the geese aren't playing a role, everything could go wrong. They could film the duckling's fall and have the baby die anyway, and have to shoot it all over again. Which would mean finding another duckling

For those concerned in the comments, making big jumps like this is strangely common for tiny baby birds (look up wood ducks for example); because they are so small and weigh so little, their terminal velocity and force of impact aren't enough to hurt them badly :)

On second thoughts, I feel like a Nobel prize would be slightly insulting - genius like this doesn’t come about very often, a Nobel prize just isn’t enough. Even Charles Darwin himself believed that the sole reason that chicks jump off cliffs like this is because of how daring the newborn is, in all fairness, what other conclusion could we come to other than this. Well done Samuel, thankyou. I can sleep at night now that I know that I DO in fact have bigger balls than these chicks

"Barnacle geese regularly create nests on high cliffs to avoid predation, however within a few days of hatching goslings must jump off these cliff faces in order to meet their parents who are foraging on the grass below... The young of species required to make astonishing jumps from cavities and cliffs have an incredible softness of their bones for the first few days of life, without which the fall would surely be fatal. It is astounding that a gosling can fall 100ft and survive at 2 days of age, where they could not at 1 week." Since I know at least some of y'all must be curious (from wwt)

I can't even imagine to what length the crew might have went to film all the things for days and cut it down to 5 minutes. Finding the locations, camping for months for something to happen. And just think of what had to happen for this to be "the way"... they had to try putting the nest up on the top of an inaccessible cliff... chicks had to mostly crater for generations... had to learn how to glide basically from newborn... All that to avoid months of risk of predation from I presume foxes?

This made me depressed when it jumped and then happy when he said it was a good launch and then depressed when it hit all the rocks and I thought it died but then happy again when it survived and then depressed again when they showed the other dead and injured ones and then happy again when it responded to the call of the mother but then depressed again when it fell off the cliff again and then happy again when it still survived and got united with its mother but then depressed again when he said there are still chicks unaccounted for and they couldn't search for it but then it made me happy when he said a third one made it but then depressed again when he said it had to catch up so I thought it was gonna get abandoned but then it made me happy again when he got reunited :)
