For the gifts you can ask people to cook plenty of meals for you that you can put in the freezer. In a french video, i hears eco friendly new mums were sooooooooooooooooo happy to have healthy meals already cooked in the freezer as the first few weeks after the birth were exhausting and the were not at all motivated to cook. So it might be a super gift to ask if you friends an family live close to you :)

I have four kids and the things I found essential where these - enough clothes for I week (we do laundry all the time so this amount of clothing worked for us) diapers, wipes, pacifiers, baby wash, baby lotion, crib, car seat, burp clothes, stroller. When they got a little older a high chair, toys that could be easily washed and not complicated to care for or have lots of pieces, and something you can put the baby in when you need to set baby down so they don't crawl away. For us that was a portable crib. The more kids I had the more I needed something I could put my baby in so I could use the bathroom really quick, answer the door really quick, things like that. Another idea people really want to get you something is a gift card. There was always something after baby was born that you forgot or didn't realize that you needed. Thanks for reading, Carrie Spencer.

Best tip I can pass along.... Stock up on bandanas! My son is nearly 18, but I share this with every new mom I can. They not only were his "snuggly item" (which is less bulky than a huge favorite blanket, you can stick it in your pocket 😁) as well as make shift wash rags, burb clothes & yes even diapers in a pinch. Plus they are easy to find second hand and soften with every wash.

We have used the same ergo carrier for our three children. It distributes the child's weight nicely for longer walks/hikes, and it can be adjusted to wear the baby on front or back for my husband or myself.

Zip up sleepers and Velcro swaddles saved my parent life! Snaps aren’t terrible, but the zippers are so much more manageable. Also, a baby swing to put the baby down in. Babies love the motion since they are use to moving around and I would recommend getting one. I’ve had two babies and those are must haves for me.

from my nephew I learned that anything can be a toy. he likes playing with spoons and with a rattle that's made of a can filled with little stones. another thing, my brother and his wife tried to be relatively minimalist as well when they had my nephew. they thought that having more than 3 cloth wipes sounded ridiculous so they only had 3 when the baby was born. on the FIRST day of having their baby at home with them, they had to go out and buy a ton more. trying to be minimalist didn't play out in this case, as they had to get them quickly. so, you seem well prepared from what I can tell :)

We just used a little spray bottle of water and soft cloths when we changed their diapers, and as they got bigger, we just held them over the tub/sink and rinsed them off that way. (We did have some biodegradable wipes for outings where that wasn't possible, but it was definitely satisfying to not have to use them all the time!). Our kids never really took to soothers, but when they started teething, we used a teether from Como Tomo, which was really satisfying for them to chew on because it looks like a circle with four little baby-sized 'fingers' coming out from the bottom (hard to describe!). Those little 'fingers' really saved the day because it encouraged them not to chew on their own hands. (Esp. good for babies with eczema etc.). Also, and I am sure you already know this 😊, but I just wanted to say that when the baby comes, if you end up needing to use something that you were trying to avoid, it's ok. Roll with the joyful chaos 😂😎

I have been SO excited since you announced you're pregnant! A belated congratulations!! I'll be having my first within a couple months and searching for all things ethical/sustainable has been a challenge. A friend really wanted to throw me a shower so I made a limited registry and tried to make it clear previously used/loved items were welcome! Unfortunately, natural materials is so foreign to many people still (or within my circle of family and friends at least) and some look down on secondhand anything as a gift. I like your idea of gifting books! If you're at all interested in podcasts, I highly recommend The Birthful Podcast! I've so been enjoying it, they cover a variety of topics, including "minimalist baby registry" :) and their motto is "talking to maternity pros to inform your intuition" can't say enough good things about it. Haha. Looking forward to more videos like this and wish you 3 all the best! 💚

A changing table can really save your back. It doesn't need to be a special furniture item, just a dresser top at about the right height. Just a suggestion to keep in mind. (Of course, you have to be super careful and not turn your back while they're on it.)

You sound really prepared! We have that same pacifier and unfortunately my son doesn’t like it, so you may end up, as we did, trying a few different styles until you find one your baby will use. I hope you have a smaller size one than what we have, because ours is really too big for a newborn’s mouth, and the newborn months are when you really need pacifiers-both to give you a break if you’re breastfeeding, and because pacifier use when sleeping has been shown to reduce SIDS. Good luck!!!

Yay cloth diapers!!!! I have a 9 1/2 month old and have been loving my cloth diapers. A few suggestions. I signed up with a cloth diaper company to have it deliver to me for the first month. I have been around babies my whole life and know how challenging it can be to figure out baby and do stuff around the house. The great thing with the diaper company was that they had gift certificates so if people wanted to gift me something I pointed them there. It was really great. Second get more than one wet bag. They are super handy and I use them for everything.

A lot of baby cribs on the market today are convertible and turn into a twin or full bed. That might be useful to get a good bang for your buck! If you buy used, just check and make sure that model hasn’t been recalled.

I highly recommend cloth wipes! If you're doing cloth diapers they're no extra work. I got a used wipes warmer from fb marketplace, wet them with an essential oil solution and it's been great. You could also ask for home delivered meals after baby comes in place of gifts, it's hard to get the time to eat let alone cook during those first few weeks at home with baby!

Congratulations on the baby! It is very smart not to buy too much beforehand. You can always buy the things later if you will really need them. Since you are planning on breastfeeding I can recommend you a great book "The big letdown". I got so lucky with a friend of mine. She has a 3 year old, but kept all her baby clothes. And since they mainly dressed her in neutral colors, they're perfect for my boy. They cloth diapered, so I have more than enough diapers and wipes. I just need to buy a couple covers since hers were pretty worn out. Something I'm going to be trying is the Mason bottle. You just buy the silicone nipple, and you can use it with any Mason jar with a metal lid. I still have 12 weeks left and this is my first, so I'm hoping to not need too much more by the time he's here in May.

So happy for you, Erin! I'm in babyland right now with my second child. It's a joyous time. Not sure how many swaddles you have, but I find we use them most. Things can get dirty really easily, so keep quantities in mind for when your cloth items get soiled. Diapers leak, some babies spit up, etc. Baby laundry detergent, baby safe soap, and diaper cream are necessities for my family, whether you make your own or buy from a company, Another thing to keep in mind is that not all babies sleep in their cribs right away. We love our Snuggle Me Organic. Wishing you all the best!

I must say that you have made wonderful choices, the only thing I would recommend is that you look into a changing mat that you can use at home and on the go, and I do recommend to look in to one that looks like a big clutch that you can store extra clothes for the baby just in case something happens when you change the diaper, so you don't have to leave the baby to look for new clothes.

A few items not covered in this video that are essential: Bulb syringe, glass baby bottles and manual breast pump, organic wool mattress protector, diaper bag/any bag will do but you need something, large size swim diapers if you do swim lessons or have pool, reef safe and natural baby sunscreen for 6 months and up, hats to protect from sun for all seasons, car seat/stroller cover (protect from sun, rain, wind, light), silicone bib. Things that don’t seem essential but that help you sooo much as a new mom are a breastfeeding pillow and a change table. They will both save your back and wrists.

I’m very happy for you. Congrats on this. I can assure you a bulb syringe is very useful when a breastfeeding baby is ill. And sunscreen after 6 months a must unless you are opposed to buying that? Nor did I suggest all these items had to be bought. If you’re looking at competing at who was the more minimal or better parent please go elsewhere. These were legit items that proved useful for me and that’s all that matters and as one mom to another I wanted to share that. So thanks for the uncalled for judgement and “look at me I’m a better mom”. Listen whatever makes you feel better even if at my expense. Peace

Baby carrier is an essential for me! My second babe was pretty fussy and always wanted to be held. I bought an ergo organic carrier on Craigslist for $50 when our first was older and it's been through 2 boys moving on to the next who's due in December 😉 it's a quick versatile carrier. Wraps are great for winter babies to keep them warm and close with easy breastfeeding access but ring slings get VERY uncomfortable after about an hour if baby weighs more than 10lbs, in my opinion. I also highly recommend a breastfeeding pillow, I skipped it with my second an regretted it. Blessed Nest makes an organic breastfeeding pillow and a quick Google search of organic breastfeeding pillows will help you find what you want. Design Dua also makes an organic kapok filled nursing pillow. Breastfeeding takes effort and dedication, the pillow will help you! Blessings💕

Hey! About feeding the baby, I heard a good advice if you breastfeed: by some milk that you can give in case you have a probleme (if you have to leave your baby for an emergency, like if you have an accident or something), that way you and the father don't have to worry about finding a way to feed the baby, you can focus on the emergency. This might be irrelevent when and if you pomp and freeze a lot of milk. I would be interrested to know what vegan milk there is for my future child, if you would'like to share that with us (I now have a doubt on whether or not you drink cow milk)

As a eco friendly homesteader, I am debating having a baby shower. I just went to one and all I saw was a bunch of single use gift bags and wrapping paper! Plus I already know I'm going to sew or buy sustainable products for my child which is usually on the pricier side so I'd rather just not ask anyone for those things at all. Our parents will only be the ones we'll ask for items.

For anyone watching this now I highly recommend something to put your baby is during the day else you are left with two options, carry them in your arms all day or they are in their crib/bassinet. Something, anything to put your baby in is ideal. It doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive but you need something so you can eat, go to the bathroom, shower etc.

When my kids were little all of their early toys were acorns, pine cones, shells etc. Babies don’t need much. I would love to knit you a traditional wool soaker for diapers, if you’d like one just message me. Babies don’t need much-just your attention! Get a Scrubba so that you can wash a small load quickly. Look for good quality toys through Waldorf sites. Also if you want to breastfeed please look for a local Laleche meeting before you have your baby! That way you will have a contact if you need help. And get their book The Motherly Art of Breastfeeding, highly recommend it. There are lots of easy baby clothes to knit. My fav patterns are by Tin Can Knits from BC. That way you get long lasting clothes, and they can be passed down. I also love the Owlie Sack on Ravelry. It’s great for using for the first couple of months. Oh yes...don’t underestimate, how hard is it, to get a baby in and out of clothes. It’s surprisingly hard, even if they are relaxed and cooperative....never mind, when they’re tense or unhappy about being changed. Uff. Then you get tense and then they start wailing and next thing you know, you‘re crying over a simple diaper change 🤦‍♀️ I would consider a heat lamp over the changing table a must, because of that. It just makes it much nicer for them in the cooler months. Also gives them an opportunity, to be out of their clothes/diapers completely, at least for a little bit. They also love skin to skin contact...you know, just laying them on your belly, covered in a blanket, so they are nice and warm and have that direct contact to you (or the dad, obviously). Very calming for them!

Wishing for money to put into a savings account for the baby is a good alternative as well. (But remember to choose a bank with clear ethical guidelines for where they invest their money.)

I usually cook a huge batch of korean seaweed soup for new mothers. I learned from my korean friend’s mom that those seaweed soup provide lots of iron, iodine & protein for new mothers to recover from child birth & to lactate more. Everybody i made it for told me that it works like a charm in getting the milk started even those who got little breast milk. Let me know if you want the recipe.

It’s a super simple recipe. 1 batch usually yields 4-6 servings: 40g dried seaweed (miyeok in korean or wakame in japanese) soak it for 30min - 1 hr, strain & squeeze. Then marinate in 2 tbs soy sauce + 1 tsp sesame oil mix thoroughly. Allow to sit & absorb for 15min room temp up to overnight in fridge. Then simply sauté the whole thing in a pot w/ 1-2 garlic cloves minced or 1 tbs ready minced. Add 1,5L (6c) water if vegan or beef stock. Bring to boil turn down to simmer for 15-20min. This recipe can be double or quadruple and freeze in portion ahead of time. Eat with rice would be super awesome. You can adjust the seasoning to your taste but that’s the very basic. Good luck w/ your baby and wishing you a healthy & easy child birth.

Concentrate on what you don‘t need. I was so lucky to be given a small book way back that did this, had a chapter that showed you need hardly anything, towels are the best multitasker ever. When my daughter had her first, I went to a baby store with her - wow, what an industry!! 😱 The only thing I saw that anyone would really „need“ was a car seat... Please don‘t succumb to the hype.

When we went to a baby store to look at car seats they gave us a "new parent checklist" of everything you NEED for the baby. I was able to cross off over half the things on the list that I know we definitely don't need, the baby industry is pretty ridiculous.

I don't have own children, but when my nieces and nephews were small something like this :www.kindlessons.site/5-spielzeug-fuer-eine-prinzessin/ but with wooden beads (maybe marble sizes) as hands and feet was great. it's soft, lightweight, and with the beads really good to grab, so it was their favourite thing to play with. Just make sure, the beads are attached really well (!), so they can't be swallowed.

Without the bucket seat life is hard in Canada, especially in fall/winter with a tiny baby. For example if you go anywhere and plan to wrap the baby, you either do it in the car and go or in the -20c. Wasn't working for us. And baby is sleeping 16 hours, every time you arrived you have to unbuckle baby, move it to the wrap or stroller. I know it's pain, but bucket seat are must here. If you like real rubber toys Sophie the giraffe is great, but the small one with the s looking extra piece. I hated glass bottles, they are so heavy. I was scared of falling on baby's head at the middle of the night. Daytime is ok. You probably already know about the Once upon a child store, it not they are great. Fb has an Edmonton cloth diapering mom group. We bought 90% of the stuff used, fb and garage sale, soo I don't feel bad about having a bit more than needed. Gift. Ask for food, babysitting, help. Many people said books, i don't agree on this, books sells $1 used 6-10-15 new. You and you friend has a better outcome with a fresh warm meal, or a half an hour help. Just my opinion. Still here in your neighborhood, you can practise on my baby

I've heard from others who skipped the bucket seat and said it was a bit more inconvenient but not a big deal so I'm not too worried about it 🤷‍♀️ We'll see how it goes though.

Check out clekinc.com for car seats. They popped up in my FB feed. It’s hard to find waterproof mattress pads that tick all the boxes.

We looked into the Clek seats! Unfortunately the convertible ones starts at 14lbs though and they're also too big for our little car.

Yeah, we luckily found one that can be used all the way from infant to 65 pounds! So I'm happy we didn't need to get 2 seats.

Your little giraffe is so adorable :) I just thought of a couple other things. A change pad. I agree change tables are impractical and using a pad on the floor is safer so they can't roll off it. Something like a small yoga mat you can easily wipe and disinfect might work. What will you use for a baby bath? The other thing is you might want to look into a bouncy chair. This is so useful so you can rock your baby and also have a safe place to put them when you have to set them down, where they can still be close to you. www.babycity.co.uk/babyandyou/why-are-baby-bouncers-important/

What about setting up a college fund that people can contribute to if they are feeling more generous than a book? Also have you heard of the no diaper potty training thing. I have not tried this but it seems pretty interesting to me. raisedgood.com/how-to-go-diaper-free-with-your-baby/

From what I understand the lifecycle analysis of single use diapers isn't actually worse than cloth diapers because of the energy that goes into washing and creating the cloths... Maybe compostable diapers are best?
@MyGreenCloset
@MyGreenCloset 5 жыл бұрын
They tend to come fairly even in most comparative analysis, but the problem with lifecycle analysis is that it's very difficult to quantify the long-term impact of plastic and packaging in a landfill. Also researching this topic I found many parents who said they were basically doing the same, or maybe just an extra load of laundry with cloth diapers (since you're already doing pretty regular laundry for other baby things like cloths), and you can save a lot of energy by air-drying instead of using the dryer. I also think the cost, resource (we got our diapers secondhand so no new resources were used), and plastic savings make it a better option for us.

Your clothes for are really cute. But I think that a two piece are much more economical. If the baby popped outside the diaper a can get lucky and the just change the bottom in a once you have to change the hole piece. And my kids grow in the back first and get really difficult with one piece my second kid had really long legs and couldn't get into a once piece at all it didn't fit. And the second is that if you are out you have to undress the baby totally naked when changing diaper and that's really cold. But you can change your mind if it doesn't work baby clothes are cheap second hand. Don't mean to be critical but only my experience. And enjoy the time when the baby is small. My kids are grown up know.

Is it strange to ask for money if someone really wants to give you a gift?
@MyGreenCloset

I guess it depends on how you feel about it and how you think the person feels. For example our parents were happy giving some money that we could buy what we wanted with, but I personally would feel weird asking friends for money.
